Our holiday abroad is booked for beginning July, I don't want to go considering the unprecedented situation.

I have friends who's holidays have been cancelled and are upset about it and wanted nothing more than to jet off to 'Sun, Sea & Sangria' ....

Can I ask other's view on their booked holiday..

Thank you smile

I have a cruise booked for September. I don't want to go, for all the reasons already stated here. I have to pay the whole amount by the end of May, or cancel and lose the deposit.
Not sure what to do.

We were booked for our annual family jolly to Cornwall end May-that’s been put on hold. Next annual family jolly is end August to Minorca with Jet2. DH and I won’t go in any event but in reality think flights will be cancelled so should get a refund. A coach trip to Thursford is booked for November too. . .

Ohhh esspee I know precisely what you mean ... and I hope your holiday is cancelled.... THAT sounds a terrible thing to say but in the current situation, you know the depth behind it....flowers

Esspee i was in the exact same place as yourself. with a trip booked for the Autumn to India. I contacted my travel agent and asked about what would happen if i cancelled now. They said i would loose deposit. After a chat with sister and sister inlaw we all agreed to do that. It felt like a weight off our shoulders, as none of us are spring chickens and the thought of one of us being ill whilst away with CV was so scarey. If we had waited to hear if FO cancelled further down the line we would have already paid full amount in Aug, plus visa costs, some vaccinations and malaria medications and the cost of booking transport to and from the airport. So loosing the deposit was not an issue. If you really dont want to take the chance then contact your agent and see where you stand. Good luck.

Just imagine if it were possible to go. It wouldn't be much of a holiday, with the constant worry of catching a deadly disease!

I wouldn't be at all suprised if even when travel restrictions are lifted, insurance companies will either refuse to cover older people or make it so expensive that it will be unaffordable.

We are booked to go to Italy with a reliable company at the end of June. I think it will be cancelled, but if flights etc were reinstated before then, we would be reluctant to go. We dont have to pay balance till mid May so if they haven't cancelled by then I think we will cancel. They will give us a credit note for our deposit so we will probably delay till next year. Though we really do feel like we need a holiday now.

We only returned to the UK a couple of weeks before lockdown after our post Christmas few weeks away, normally we would book for summer and then the following year when we get home, we have booked flights and hotels for 2021 January and February in Pacific Mexico as we feel that by then this will all have calmed down again (we booked just before the deadline of travel insurance not covering cancellation costs so are covered on our policy as we dont book package holidays) I believe that anyone due to travel in the next few month that has booked a package will be cancelled anyway so if the companies cancel your trips then you will have the refund from them, dont cancel the trip as you wont be eligible for a refund if you do. The outcome of your booked trip will also depend upon circumstances in coutry not just here in the UK so hold your nerve as cancellation wont happen until the last minute. We were once cancelled less than 24 hours before we flew out and were already packed. Remember that they wont take you if the foreigh office advises against travel as when this happens you have no insurance throughout your trip.

We booked Centreparcs Longleat for July with family and a lodge sleeping 8. We paid the deposit and the balance was due now. The company emailed to say the payment has been deferred to 5 weeks before. I can't see it happening. Leisure centres and gyms may be the last to re-open. People whose Centreparcs holidays are booked to take place shortly can either have a refund or rebook another date. I am resigned to not going.

Aepgirl Thu 30-Apr-20 10:08:09

I can’t see your holiday happening, so the decision will not be yours.

Marjgran Thu 30-Apr-20 10:08:26

Doubt anyone going anywhere until 2021 - or 2031!

Daisymae Thu 30-Apr-20 10:11:46

We paid in full for an Easter break in a holiday cottage. The options we were given were to rebook for later this year or claim on insurance. The insurance didn't cover, so it was just as we that we didn't waste money taking it out. We have booked for November which is bonkers as we don't want to go then and we should have been going in the school holidays. So basically they have us over a barrel. If anyone had not paid in full then I would hold onto the balance as it may be difficult getting a refund. I am really sorry that I didn't hold out longer and it's a considerable amount.

cossybabe Thu 30-Apr-20 10:14:54

we have 5 booked between now and next May - we don't want to go on any of them. Our annual travel insurance runs out next month and the renewal policy will not cover coronavirus as will none of the other companies - looks like we will lose 5 deposits - but we should be safe>

We have been told this week that we “may” be allowed to holiday here in Ireland, depending on how things go, but I wouldn’t imagine anyone will be allowed to travel overseas. I am booked on a garden tour of Scotland in August but that won’t be happening & I’d be reluctant to go anyway, especially as I’m immunosuppressed.

newnanny Thu 30-Apr-20 10:26:09

We had to cancel Easter break to France. Brittany ferries gave full refund without complaining. It was in my account the following day. We normally book for end of July and all of August in France but have not booked this year. If the dreaded virus is gone by July we will make a late boking, if not hope to book a couple of weeds in Cornwall if permitted.

Gingergirl Thu 30-Apr-20 10:28:37

Whatever, don’t cancel! You won’t stand any chance of getting any money back if you do that. So wait and see what occurs. If it’s cancelled for you, you may be able to claim a refund or move it to a following year. Personally, if I was worried about it, when the time came, I wouldn’t go, even if I lost a lot of money (and that has happened to me in the past). I just don’t think the money is that important. But actually, as said above, I think the matter will be taken out of your hands anyway...

4allweknow Thu 30-Apr-20 10:29:18

Even had holiday booked for September cancelled. Very much doubt you will be flying off abroad in July. DS had his holiday trip here cancelled for July. Wouldn't be flying.

Candy6 Thu 30-Apr-20 10:29:41

I had booked a luxury family holiday to celebrate my husband’s 60th in July - what was to be our first with our adult children/grandchild but we’ve all decided we don’t want to go. I don’t think we’d be allowed anyway tbh. I’ve a friend who’s booked for August and she’s not going either. I was due to pay the balance a few weeks ago and I’ve just not paid it. I’ll lose my £200 deposit but I didn’t want to pay the balance and then get a “credit note” which the company were suggesting.

lostinfrance Thu 30-Apr-20 10:31:55

I don't think you'll be going so try not to worry about it for now.

I have flights booked to USA at the end of June. I doubt that will happen. Even if the flights are running we may not be accepted in to the USA. Neither do I want to risk becoming ill and stranded over there - insurance was booked prior to the pandemic but still.. Also many things will be closed. We were due to visit Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe amongst other places. Also to visit with family who live there.

I would love my ticket money back but am just pleased that I hadn't forked out for any other the other things i generally book in advance - airport parking, 3 weeks car hire in USA, hotels etc.

I reckon we'll still be in some state of lockdown in to June here in the UK anyway.

Nanny27 Thu 30-Apr-20 10:34:22

We are booked on a transatlantic cruise at the end of October. We have looked forward to it for over a year but I suppose in reality we won't be able to go. ?. The cruise company have not made any decisions beyond July... Yet

gulligranny Thu 30-Apr-20 10:34:57

We were due to be in Devon this week (looking at the weather, really glad we aren't) and were given the option of a refund or a rebook. We've simply chosen the same week next year - hopefully we will be (a) still alive and (b) not still imprisoned at home!

My partner and I have an apartment on the island of La Palma which we bought last summer when she retired. We spent 4 months there over Christmas and returned to the UK in February. We decided to spend another month there in March and she flew out on the 12th. I was due to fly on the 23rd as I had some house repairs to sort out here. She flew out as planned and almost immediately was subjected to a tight lockdown. The airports closed and we are stuck. My flight was cancelled and we are now stuck in two different countries. I haven’t seen her for 6 weeks and it is likely to be months before we can be reunited. We Skype several times a day but it’s not the same at all. I would give anything for one of us to be able to travel. Preferably both of us in the UK where the rest of our families are. On the positive side I guess we are both saving some cash and apart from an online splurge of a very lovely bright and cheerful handbag from my favourite fashion outlet (Hobbs!) I haven’t really bought anything apart from basic food.

25Avalon Thu 30-Apr-20 10:40:40

If you don’t feel comfortable about going then don’t go. If you feel uneasy you won’t enjoy it. Others may feel differently but that is down to them. Do what is right for you. No amount of money is worth it and we may not be allowed to go anyway.

Jane43 Thu 30-Apr-20 10:44:12

How sad for you Hebdenali I hope you will be reunited soon.

mamaa Thu 30-Apr-20 10:45:46

We should be in Rhodes now. Realised beginning of March that we probably wouldn't be going ( didn't really want to anyway for fear of being ill abroad) so didn't cancel, just kept an eye on the travel agents website, which had coronavirus updates regularly. We were emailed about 2 weeks ago to say we could rebook, all admin fees waived. We looked for same holiday in late September but the price had gone up 100% so we replied saying no longer affordable. They have since offered 75% cash refund and the rest as voucher to be use towards a holiday by end of 2021. Not ideal but it seems to be what many firms are doing. have accepted this offer as better than nothing but feel it could be quite a while before the money is back in our account!
