Holiday booked, don't want to go

Our holiday abroad is booked for beginning July, I don't want to go considering the unprecedented situation.

I have friends who's holidays have been cancelled and are upset about it and wanted nothing more than to jet off to 'Sun, Sea & Sangria' ....

Can I ask other's view on their booked holiday..

Thank you smile

I am hoping our lodge booking in England next month will be cancelled, but even if it is I will have a fight on my hands with Hoseasons. I do not want a deferral via unprotected
voucher if the site is closed when we are due to go. NEVER book with Hoseasons. They are getting an incredibly bad press, even taking into account the mess holiday companies find themselves in .

Our next foreign holiday is booked for May 2021 on a river cruise, but I understand I can defer nearer the time if necessary.

I had a holiday booked for early June. Tui cancelled it yesterday and offered me a credit note plus a bonus, or the option to claim refund. I'm very undecided.....

I've booked a holiday in the isle of Wight for end of March. It hasn't been cancelled yet,. But I don't want to go. Hopefully we will be able to defer it until a later date. As I don't want to be getting on trains, ferries, as we haven't got a car.

Don’t go if you don’t want to

We have a one week cruise booked, pre virus, for the first week in October. Deposit paid, balance due early June. When I checked our cancellation insurance (I know I don't want to go anyway, too risky) it said under what is covered if '....the Foreign and Commonwealth Office issue a directive advising against all, or all but essential travel to your trip destination because of an earthquake, fire, flood or hurricane'. No cover for a virus..... I'll wait to see what the travel company offer before paying out several thousand pounds for the balance.

Easy jet are cancelling flights one week at a time. We were due to go to Greece on 5th May and as our outward and return flights have been cancelled we have been granted a refund. You need to wait till the airline cancels rather than cancelling yourself to be sure of a refund. We had also paid a deposit to a hotel in Guernsey and they have agreed to roll this balance over till the same time next year which is fine

pennykins Thu 30-Apr-20 10:53:14

I very much doubt if you would be able to go in any case as most countries are staying closed for the rest of this year and not welcoming tourists, from overseas, in case they take the virus to them.
I would not go anywhere for the rest of this year just enjoy our own country for a change

Jane43, thank you. It’s an odd situation though as she used to work in Geneva and traveled internationally for many years I am used to being separated and getting on with my own life. But there was always a return date to look forward to and nice things planned for when we were together. It’s an unconventional relationship but one that has always worked. But now there is no end date and my favourite UK travel in my small Campervan has been stopped as well. Just having some idea as to when this awfulness will be over would be wonderful and motivational.

I think you can expect your holiday to be cancelled and you can breathe that sigh of relief. We have had two cancelled holidays so far a cruise in March (still waiting for the refund) and another family week in Somerset which the company will not cancel (they say they are still open if the government changes its policies) but offered us the same week next year at the same price which we accepted as they are a small concern and need to keep going. We have a cruise booked in September and still need to pay the full money for that, not sure what will happen with that one, its a wait and see. Hope you get the result you want, I for one feel safe at home.

We should be in Rhodes now. Realised beginning of March that we probably wouldn't be going ( didn't really want to anyway for fear of being ill abroad) so didn't cancel, just kept an eye on the travel agents website, which had coronavirus updates regularly. We were emailed about 2 weeks ago to say we could rebook, all admin fees waived. We looked for same holiday in late September but the price had gone up 100% so we replied saying no longer affordable. They have since offered 75% cash refund and the rest as voucher to be use towards a holiday by end of 2021. Not ideal but it seems to be what many firms are doing. have accepted this offer as better than nothing but feel it could be quite a while before the money is back in our account!

How sad for you Hebdenali I hope you will be reunited soon.

If you don’t feel comfortable about going then don’t go. If you feel uneasy you won’t enjoy it. Others may feel differently but that is down to them. Do what is right for you. No amount of money is worth it and we may not be allowed to go anyway.

My partner and I have an apartment on the island of La Palma which we bought last summer when she retired. We spent 4 months there over Christmas and returned to the UK in February. We decided to spend another month there in March and she flew out on the 12th. I was due to fly on the 23rd as I had some house repairs to sort out here. She flew out as planned and almost immediately was subjected to a tight lockdown. The airports closed and we are stuck. My flight was cancelled and we are now stuck in two different countries. I haven’t seen her for 6 weeks and it is likely to be months before we can be reunited. We Skype several times a day but it’s not the same at all. I would give anything for one of us to be able to travel. Preferably both of us in the UK where the rest of our families are. On the positive side I guess we are both saving some cash and apart from an online splurge of a very lovely bright and cheerful handbag from my favourite fashion outlet (Hobbs!) I haven’t really bought anything apart from basic food.

We were due to be in Devon this week (looking at the weather, really glad we aren't) and were given the option of a refund or a rebook. We've simply chosen the same week next year - hopefully we will be (a) still alive and (b) not still imprisoned at home!

Nanny27 Thu 30-Apr-20 10:34:22

We are booked on a transatlantic cruise at the end of October. We have looked forward to it for over a year but I suppose in reality we won't be able to go. ?. The cruise company have not made any decisions beyond July... Yet

lostinfrance Thu 30-Apr-20 10:31:55

I don't think you'll be going so try not to worry about it for now.

I have flights booked to USA at the end of June. I doubt that will happen. Even if the flights are running we may not be accepted in to the USA. Neither do I want to risk becoming ill and stranded over there - insurance was booked prior to the pandemic but still.. Also many things will be closed. We were due to visit Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe amongst other places. Also to visit with family who live there.

I would love my ticket money back but am just pleased that I hadn't forked out for any other the other things i generally book in advance - airport parking, 3 weeks car hire in USA, hotels etc.

I reckon we'll still be in some state of lockdown in to June here in the UK anyway.

I had booked a luxury family holiday to celebrate my husband’s 60th in July - what was to be our first with our adult children/grandchild but we’ve all decided we don’t want to go. I don’t think we’d be allowed anyway tbh. I’ve a friend who’s booked for August and she’s not going either. I was due to pay the balance a few weeks ago and I’ve just not paid it. I’ll lose my £200 deposit but I didn’t want to pay the balance and then get a “credit note” which the company were suggesting.

4allweknow Thu 30-Apr-20 10:29:18

Even had holiday booked for September cancelled. Very much doubt you will be flying off abroad in July. DS had his holiday trip here cancelled for July. Wouldn't be flying.

Gingergirl Thu 30-Apr-20 10:28:37

Whatever, don’t cancel! You won’t stand any chance of getting any money back if you do that. So wait and see what occurs. If it’s cancelled for you, you may be able to claim a refund or move it to a following year. Personally, if I was worried about it, when the time came, I wouldn’t go, even if I lost a lot of money (and that has happened to me in the past). I just don’t think the money is that important. But actually, as said above, I think the matter will be taken out of your hands anyway...

newnanny Thu 30-Apr-20 10:26:09

We had to cancel Easter break to France. Brittany ferries gave full refund without complaining. It was in my account the following day. We normally book for end of July and all of August in France but have not booked this year. If the dreaded virus is gone by July we will make a late boking, if not hope to book a couple of weeds in Cornwall if permitted.

dublingran Thu 30-Apr-20 10:15:22

We have been told this week that we “may” be allowed to holiday here in Ireland, depending on how things go, but I wouldn’t imagine anyone will be allowed to travel overseas. I am booked on a garden tour of Scotland in August but that won’t be happening & I’d be reluctant to go anyway, especially as I’m immunosuppressed.

cossybabe Thu 30-Apr-20 10:14:54

we have 5 booked between now and next May - we don't want to go on any of them. Our annual travel insurance runs out next month and the renewal policy will not cover coronavirus as will none of the other companies - looks like we will lose 5 deposits - but we should be safe>

Daisymae Thu 30-Apr-20 10:11:46

We paid in full for an Easter break in a holiday cottage. The options we were given were to rebook for later this year or claim on insurance. The insurance didn't cover, so it was just as we that we didn't waste money taking it out. We have booked for November which is bonkers as we don't want to go then and we should have been going in the school holidays. So basically they have us over a barrel. If anyone had not paid in full then I would hold onto the balance as it may be difficult getting a refund. I am really sorry that I didn't hold out longer and it's a considerable amount.

Marjgran Thu 30-Apr-20 10:08:26

Doubt anyone going anywhere until 2021 - or 2031!
