I'm having trouble with my toilet seat, I'm sure you know the 'wonky' scenario.

Now, the screw just keeps spinning without tightening but I also can't get the thing that the screw goes into, out!

Any suggestions, please?
If I could just find a way to hold it for now I would be happy.

Good. Best buy yourself some matches as they are useful. Cocktail sticks do not splinter like matchsticks do therefore the screw can't bite into them as well. The two woods are different, one hard, one soft.

I had similar problems for years with loo seats loosening off no matter how I tried to tighten them. About 4 years ago friend recommended a seat in Argos. Their most basic and cheapest white one saying it solved the problem for her. It was only £5 at that time, I think it might be £8 now. I replaced both loo seats with the £5 ones and in 4 years they’ve never loosened. Also they were very easy to fit. When the opportunity arises one of them might be worth a try Missadventure.

PS would a pair of tweezers fit in the hole to pull the thing out??

He sounds a keeper phoenix, he buys you the items he needs. Still, he listens to you and that's a plus AND he fixed the seat. All good.

GabriellaG54 have you read other threads! Love him very much but...........

Tweezers would fit down there, I think, but the thing is very sturdy, so I don't think they'd grip enough.

It's really given me the hump!
I'm painting the bathroom, but having to do umpteen repairs as well.

I need a box of matches, or man.

If you love him there areare no buts. ????‍❤️‍?‍?

Love (and a toothpick) conquers all.

MissAdventure
Please put a photo of the place where the screw fits in.
The plastic thingy like a real plug is called a gasket and is there to prevent the screw (metal) from cracking the pan of the toilet (ceramic) when you tighten it.
I've looked on YouTube and seen how to fix it but need to see what kind of seat fitting it is as there are several with different ways of fixing and tightening it.
?

GabriellaG54 Fri 01-May-20 21:33:18

like a RAWL plug not...real plug ?

phoenix Fri 01-May-20 21:37:37

Gabriella there are always "buts", for example ,but I wish he wouldn't leave the toilet seat up, leave his socks on the floor, wish he wouldn't leave that mess after making a sandwich.....m

MissAdventure Fri 01-May-20 21:47:02

Does that mean I've got to take the damn seat off again, Gabriella? sad

GabriellaG54 Fri 01-May-20 21:54:51

No...just lift it up so I can see the fitting

GabriellaG54 Fri 01-May-20 22:02:11

phoenix
I get it...but more pluses than minuses makes for ??

GabriellaG54 Fri 01-May-20 22:08:17

Anyway, leaving the toilet seat up means that when your DH flushes, the spray travels far far further than he may realise...or maybe he doesn't think of it. Not a good idea.
Never mind...I'm sure you'd miss those annoyances...

Callistemon Fri 01-May-20 22:20:03

I'm getting [comfused] now.

Did the phone fall down the loo when you were I inspecting the loo seat?

The fittings are rubbish these says, however expensive the seat. One minute they're fine, the next you're swinging sideways.
Has it rotted? I ask because the fitting thingy for our perfectly OK tap has corroded and half is missing.

You can get different sizes of Rawl plugs.

GabriellaG54 Fri 01-May-20 22:22:58

You can find out how to fix your tap on YouTube. Save yourself a mint by not paying a plumber.

GabriellaG54 Fri 01-May-20 22:24:38

Buy a new set of taps (cheapest are about £25) and install them yourself. Easy. I have done mine.

Callistemon Fri 01-May-20 22:29:45

Well done! DH would normally do it but his hand won't fit in the small space!

I tried to get my hand there to screw it back up and realised it was in bits in the cupboard. However, it's very difficult to get to so our friendly plumber will be round to sort it - at a safe distance.

GabriellaG54 Fri 01-May-20 22:38:01

If a plumber can get to it, so can you. ?

Callistemon Fri 01-May-20 22:40:40

He's got better equipment.
grin

Callistemon Fri 01-May-20 22:41:20

And I've strained my wrist, too much gardening.

GabriellaG54 Fri 01-May-20 22:45:44

Bet the plumber's a looker and that's why you're keen...??

GabriellaG54 Fri 01-May-20 22:46:34

Er...have you seen his...'equipment'?

I just read this through from start to finish. It’s very entertaining, mostly because you all persist in having at least 3 topics of conversation running simultaneously...... Just watch these women multi task!
Last night I re-watched a programme from the very funny series ‘Dinner Ladies’. They were a riot, maybe because Victoria Wood kept the scripts so real. Think this is why the Toilet Seat Challenge by Text was so amusing. Keep safe...when you sit on that loo, eh? ????
