Is anyone else wondering what today will bring ? Having just heard that my ex is driving 60 miles to do a distanced visit to relatives, which is fine but will the roads suddenly be full of people off to play golf etc .? It will be strange.

I feel sorry for reception children starting school, not a nice introduction to their school lives, everyone full of fear, constant handwashing and keeping apart from other children you desperately want to socialise with.

Tee time Are you sure toilets are open. My husbands golf course aren't and we are not allowed them open on allotment

The car had not been driven for two weeks so we drove along the seafront without stopping, cars were parked nose to tail along the main road. People were walking and running on the beach and there were five surfers with those parachute things.
We had no intention of leaving the car but I don't suppose we could have found anywhere to park anyway, public car parks are still locked.

can't see how anyone could/would get infected in open spaces

Unfortunately you can if people are crowded together and don't socially distance. The risk is lower outdoors but not zero

I am not going anywhere this weekend, even for a cycling ride, speeding along the shared footpath. Its going to be a heatwave, so say, and that will bring everyone out, going to the beaches and into the country. Boris should have waited another 3 weeks this will just bring a spike in the deaths and we will see that next week.

The shops were quite a bit quieter this morning when I did my parent's shopping for them, so that's a good knock on effect.

NotAGran55 Wed 13-May-20 16:19:50

My day would have been magical if I had followed my dream of driving 200 miles to do my weekly shop!

However, despite trying to convince myself that the car park of M & S was an ‘open space’ and I could ‘exercise’ by pushing a heavy trolley for half an hour , my common sense got the better of me .

Seeing my young son , albeit behind a till and conveyor belt , would have made my day and the 400 mile round trip worth it .

I would never have forgiven myself if I had been involved in an incident of any sort and needed help from any of the emergency services.

Riverwalk apparently nine Chelsea Pensioners have died from COVID19 sad

I remember going there many years ago when DS's choir sang for the pensioners.

I think letting people drive any number of miles to wherever they wish in England, will cause havoc, and people will flock to the coast, and National Parks every time the weather is reasonable. They will forget that toilets will not be open and opportunities to buy food and drink will be limited. I think a rise in infection is bound to happen.
While I understand that home schooling children will be difficult for many parents, I disagree with allowing Year 1 children back to School. They simply will not be able to resist playing with friends, running up to one another etc.

With more people driving, it will inevitably put more pressure on the NHS because sadly traffic accidents do happen.

I am glad that here in Wales we are still in lockdown.

ALANaV Wed 13-May-20 16:00:22

Well I live on the coast and was expecting to find hoardes of people 'exercising' all day …...but only a very few oldies (like me) out walking along the sea front this morning …..and just now only a few on the beach with their dogs ..oh, and some surfers (who I hope don't get hypothermia !!!!) ….just come in for tea and a bun and getting dinner ready ...then a short walk for around 2 miles and home for Pointless !!!!!! ..waiting to see what the weekend will bring ! So far some of the benches are still taped up, as is the main car park …..but fresh air is less of a risk than crowded places like public transport ……

I finished a night shift this morning, I expected the roads to be busy as I was travelling home from York, but they were just as quiet as they have been for the past few weeks. I just hope people will still have jobs at the end of this crisis.

Riverwalk Wed 13-May-20 15:22:46

Wasn't it rather reckless GabriellaG to drive all that way after three hours sleep? I see you posted on another thread in the early hours. I hope you enjoyed your visit to your daughter and don't fall asleep on the way back!

What a very sensible and balanced post! I agree with all you have said, so thank you. The only thing that comes to mind is that whenever someone mentions commonsense I am reminded of what one of my teachers used to say - "commonsense is the least common of all the senses" and don't we see it every day!

ninathenana Wed 13-May-20 14:27:14

The beach front car park along the road from my house was full today, after being empty since lockdown. There were lots of camper vans. It seems everyone has rushed to the beach.

Rosalyn69 Wed 13-May-20 14:10:30

I’m in Wales so nothings changed. My husband’S golf club is opening but only to play alone or with a family member.
As quizqueen says - we can’t stay in lock down forever.

Calendargirl Wed 13-May-20 14:08:37

Craftycat

Foreign currency can be posted direct to your home from my bank, no need to go to a branch, but who will be buying foreign currency at the moment? Not many going on holiday I would have thought.

quizqueen Wed 13-May-20 14:04:33

We can't stay in lockdown forever. There have been no covid related deaths in my area at all and only about 10 in the whole constituency ( that's out of 70,000 people+).

Puzzler61 Wed 13-May-20 13:57:12

Julto Wed 13-May-20 13:56:55

Not heard that, my daughter is waiting to move house ?

gillyknits Wed 13-May-20 13:46:57

Today brought good news for me,my niece had a baby boy. Mother and baby both fine!

Christalbee Wed 13-May-20 13:15:08

If two people, including Estate Agent came into your house for a viewing, you would have arranged it, and left all the internal doors open and cupboards. They would not need to touch anything, or sit down anywhere. If you have family members visiting, they would sit down and touch things most probably. Thats the difference!! Also you would keep a distance from them to social distance. 2M.

Happyme: a balanced and sensible post. Thank you!
