www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2020/04/employed-help-coronavirus-furlough/

Am I understanding the above article (with today's date on it) correctly?
As it's quite long, here's the relevant section:

When will my employer have the furlough cash to be able to pay me?
The scheme opened to employers on Monday 20 April, with the first payments scheduled to be made within six working days – the delay being due to fraud checks and Bacs transfer times. Payments started coming through last week. This first payment will cover March's wages, though some employers will also have claimed for April.

If you've been paid as normal, this 'behind the scenes' transfer won't affect you, as it'll just be your employer claiming for salaries they've already paid out, or are about to pay out.

Yet a decent number of employers have struggled for cash flow, with some telling employees they can't afford to pay their wages until the grants come in.

If your employer has been waiting for this cash to come through before paying you, there'll likely be a further delay as once your employer has the furlough cash, they'll need to run payroll to ensure you pay the right tax, national insurance and pension contributions on the 80% furlough wage.

Yes, it does say that some of these people will have been paid as normal, but seems that a considerable number are only just starting to see any payments come through.

If that's the case, it does make you question the Government assertion that people are already 'addicted" to the furlough payments, doesn't it!

It seems to me that they are trying to whip up the old shirkers v workers division again, so there will be someone else to blame when the effects of the economic downturn start to be felt.

Yes I agree. There is already rumblings of discontent about key workers struggling in to work and others 'loafing about' on their furlough pay. Classic divide and conquer, deserving and undeserving poor etc.

Absolutely right Mamacaz and GillT57

Extreme right wingers like those on the 1922 commitee making the inference that working people are all lazy loafers.

Of course they are - sadly many of the furloughed workers are shortly going to be made redundant are they not? But in the meantime let’s give them plenty of stick ( when we’re not too busy sticking it to the teachers)

GillT57 Wed 13-May-20 15:19:49

That's the thing Suziewoozie, many, if not most, of the key workers are likely to keep their jobs NHS staff, bus drivers, supermarket workers etc., etc., but a lot of furloughed staff may find that there is nothing there at the end of it, especially if they are in the hospitality industries.

Thousands have already lost their jobs but won't know it until the furlough pay runs out. Tough times ahead

GillT57 Wed 13-May-20 15:47:58

Indeed Daisymae, I suspect many firms will never re-open and many jobs will go.

There is another post running about this but it states that many furlough workers are working pastime and getting paid cash in hand and horror of horse they are not paying tax on the earnings. I suggested that they should be asking large multi nationals and people like Branson who pay no tax are applying for help.
People just do know where they are at the moment regarding jobs and money and most are living day by day. This government just can't seem t organise anything from payments to PPE, and it all the sympathy spoken by them is just empty words.

As that extract shows, furlough pay is channeled through employers, not paid directly to staff.
So it wouldn't matter if staff had become 'addicted' to it - employers just stop claiming it from government when they are ready for the staff members to come back to work.

is it possible to get addicted to 80% of your normal income? I thought the government said if you're furloughed you can work for someone else or as self employed to make up the 20%
Hard to see we've started to blame the victims of the virus already even if its just the financial victims,no doubt anyone who actually catches it will also be blamed for not "being alert" Good old Tory Britain

My son was due to start a new job 2 days after the lockdown but hadn’t finished his notice from the job he already had.

He is not getting furlough paid by either, and can’t claim benefits because he has a job.

He can’t wait to go back to work.

Ridiculous or what.

FarNorth Wed 13-May-20 22:28:56

Minigrandma that's terrible.
