We have a holiday cottage in the New Forest booked for mid July we are keeping our fingers crossed that we will be allowed to go, but will any cafes be open, places to visit, what a conundrum?

We have 2 short holidays booked in August and September maybe things will have changed by then.

What is going to happen to the holiday and hospitality industry ?

Difficult times.

I talked to a holiday company this morning and they are going to be fully operational from 1st July. I checked another one online and they are quoting from 1st July. I have made no decisions as yet but that's the info I have to go on. We are supporting to be going to US in September and it appears to be going ahead at the moment.

I own a holiday apartment in Cornwall, my booking agent is only taking new bookings from end of July.. I have bookings in for June/July but don't/won't know if guests will be able to go until gov says so... all very sad for everyone a there is nothing like a good holiday by the sea side to lift your spirits!

I've had to cancel 2 overseas holidays this year and don't expect to even have a UK holiday before mid next year, if then. It wouldn't be fair on the locals to go to a holiday town while we are still in this situation and, to be honest, I've stayed home all this time and I'm not going to waste all that by starting to travel around before I know it is safe.

We are booked to go to Yorkshire at the end of September to a house we stay in each year and our children and grandchildren join us, we also rent a smaller cottage for my son and his family to stay in. We have not seen any of them since the beginning of lockdown, just emailed and spoken on the phone. I suspect we will not be able to do it this year as we are self-isolating as we are over 70. What has occurred to me is that if another family have slept in the beds until the morning of your arrival day, obviously the bedding has been changed but the pillows will have had people breathing into them for possibly 12 hours the previous night. That seems quite risky to me. If by any chance we do get to go there this year I will make sure we take out own pillows.

Regarding the understandable comments about grandparents doing childcare this is because of their age. Employing a childminder or nanny is beyond the reach of most people but using a grandparent is risky and we have been told repeatedly that the older section of the population is more likely to suffer seriously from Covid. There has been an emphasis all along on protecting older people and this continues for the time being. I look after my own grandchildren normally and know how much this help is needed but cannot take the risk to my health and that of my DH at present.

Teddy 123....disingenuous ….I take it YOU are not planning on going anywhere ? this mass hysteria is no use to anyone ….lets get the country going again ! New Zealand has the right idea (except of course most countries including NZ are banning visitors from Europe …...pity we didn't at the beginning ! I have had three holidays cancelled so far …..can't even go visit my own holiday place in the UK ! grin

In Scotland so no easing here. Had a holiday cottage booked down south in June but decided best just to lose the deposit and cancel as we were told most likely NT properties, restaurants etc would not be open. I also had booked to go to Italy with a tour company but have left my deposit with them in the hope that a vaccine will eventually be developed and in a year or so I can go away. My third planned trip was to the Festival of Quilts which has now been cancelled. Fortunately I could cancel my hotel booking but my flights are still in the balance as that is in August. I think we will just need to be patient and if we can get out on some day trips in the future just enjoy our countryside. I fear there may be another spike so don't want to arrange anything even for next year just now especially as in the vulnerable group.

Sheila11 we're only a tiny island ,surrounded by water ,in comparison to many other countries. Which is all the more reason why it should have been contained.

It's just a nightmare, some people are now being asked to pay the remainder of their holiday payment, but they probably won't be able to go.My daughter's still waiting for a refund for a skiing holiday in March, they need the money back.I wouldn't even book a short break in this country,we don't know what's going to be open and when.
And Gillybob,I think you have a point, they're getting parents back to work, but we're not allowed to look after grandchildren, even if they're back at school,my grandaughter's parents can't work within school hours. It is different for those with nannies

Weak government frightened of the people. It is really sad how badly handled this virus has been handled or not handled should I say. Still no shut down of borders , and if ever quarantine comes in, it exempts France, which simply means anyone who gets to France can come in. My guess is that until everyone learns that LIFE is more important than holidays and travelling all over the place, the virus will live on.
Wish people would stop moaning about holidays and what they can and can’t do......just think of it as a plus that you are not on a ventilator dying.

Spain has a 14 day quarantine in place for anyone coming into the country, so if you went there you'd be holed up in a hotel room of their choice!

Whitewavemark2. I don't know if you misunderstand or have chosen to ignore the latest from Boris but we aren't allowed to go away from home overnight. We can go out during the day but have to be in our own homes at night. It's not a good idea to go off for a week especially when most other people are trying to follow the rules to keep us all safe.

Davida1968 Thu 14-May-20 10:44:45

We had planned to be flying overseas this week, to see DS & family. (Last seen in 2018.) Thank goodness we didn't book anything; I could see the writing on the wall (with coronavirus) so I held back on booking flights. Now we're resigned to this being a trip we'll make next year - we hope.....

Rose56 Thu 14-May-20 10:43:05

No it’s not, listening to interviews it’s obvious that the needs of ordinary people simply hadn’t been considered

Sheila11 Thu 14-May-20 10:33:47

EllanVannin
I’m guessing for the same reasons as every other country in the world. ?

Sheila11 Thu 14-May-20 10:32:41

Gillybob, they said childminders can work but they can only take children from one family.

EllanVannin Thu 14-May-20 10:31:21

Nannan2 I agree with you. This is the fifth damn month, totally unacceptable that this country hasn't contained this killer----WHY ?

EllanVannin Thu 14-May-20 10:29:23

Rosie1959 I wanted to go to Jersey too to see the Battle of the Flowers, but even that is cancelled this year sad

Good link with good deals but all for next year.

Id have thought waiting so long for a precious child would mean trying to be even more safe with him/her? My GD too is precious,to be a 'rainbow baby' born after a tragedy, but still we are not going to take any risks, no matter how much i long for a cuddle.

Nannan2 Thu 14-May-20 10:21:49

If we'd had a stricter lockdown here and for longer, we might have not had going on for 34,000 deaths!! I still think easing any kind of lockdown while the death count is still rising is madness!! Yes, economy needs help- but NOT at cost of more lives!!angry

GreenGran78 Thu 14-May-20 10:14:11

Nannan2 I agree that cuddling isn’t a good idea. However the new grandparents have been on lockdown for weeks, as have the new parents. There is still a slight risk, I suppose, but try telling that to a couple who have waited 11 years for this moment. First grandchild. Not 100% safe, maybe, but I would guess at 98%. There have been virtually no cv cases in their area. Not my baby, or decision!
