My Victorian house has a fireplace in my bedroom one of those rather lovely old bedroom black lead fireplaces with a trapdoor
Well I m lying in bed hearing a lot of scuffling behind the trapdoor and realise a bird has fallen down the chimney so I pulled the curtains right back and opened the window then opened the trapdoor and there is a largish bird I can’t see its head just it’s legs and a bit of the body but the darned thing is sitting there not coming out I think it may be a rather large young seagull and I m a bit loathe to stick my arm in to get it out but I also can’t sleep with it sitting there
Watch this space

I m still holding out hope that he hasn’t been harmed I live on a main road with cars all going down the back and front of my house there’s precious little wildlife around apart from seagulls, pigeons and small birds There’s not one feather anywhere so I m really hopeful he hasn’t been hurt
Two people have told me that seagulls can swoop down and grab their young It was raining 24 hours did the mum swooped down to get him? she is still up there on my chimney But not calling any more
I m guessing of course ....
I guess I ll never know and no more pictures of Stephen I m afraid

You did your best for him Bluebelle.

sad

Chewbacca Wed 08-Jul-20 23:01:57

Flipping eck, I feel gutted for the little fella. Has any other seagull had so many people rooting for him? Really hoping he's ok BlueBelle

Feelingmyage55 Wed 08-Jul-20 22:14:13

So sad Bluebelle. I’ll pop in tomorrow just in case.

lemongrove Wed 08-Jul-20 22:06:23

I can understand how you must feel....in fact I feel quite down about it just reading!
You did your best, and in fact even had he been up on the roof....a similar fate may have awaited sadly.

Just read this thread, and hats off to you BlueBell! You have done your absolute best, and it seems the poor little one has met misfortune. Perhaps an owl or other night critter.

Nature can have cruel outcomes, but you indeed did give him a good chance.

seacliff Wed 08-Jul-20 19:46:09

Oh so sad, I do feel for you Bluebelle. I was so hoping he'd appear. I hate it when you never know what happened.

You did much more than most would have done. You gave him a good chance. flowers

BlueBelle Wed 08-Jul-20 18:22:28

Haha missA I ve just got to get used to the idea he’s gone and I ll never know how or why

MissAdventure Wed 08-Jul-20 18:19:46

It's no good, Bluebelle, you're going to have to call the police and report him missing.
Oh, I hope he turns up safe.

BlueBelle Wed 08-Jul-20 18:16:23

I wish it was that simple
nottooold no completely impossible he won’t fledge till August he had no flight feathers and no tail yet, still fluffy so impossible fir him to get off the ground until at least another three four or five weeks If you look at the photos you will see he’s not a fledgling hes a baby

NotTooOld Wed 08-Jul-20 16:27:01

I haven't read the whole thread but while you were at work couldn't he just have learned to fly and gone off with his mum?

BlueBelle Wed 08-Jul-20 16:18:58

?I got home from work no food eaten, searched and searched again, my garden is really quite small and there’s no way he could have got over 6 ft high walls and no sign of a body or any feathers or blood
Nothing at all in the alley ways or anywhere around outside
It’s just like he neve4 existed I miss his little call at my door
Ah well I ll have to just forget, he had 10 days extra life ..... I tried

SueDonim Wed 08-Jul-20 15:46:21

I was just clinging to straws, really, Callistemon.

I’m so sorry, Bluebell. He may turn up yet but whatever the ending, you’ve been so kind to a defenceless creature and given pleasure to lots of Gransnetters, too. flowers

Callistemon Wed 08-Jul-20 14:09:42

SueDonim

Oh no! sad

Could he have used the greenery to hop his way up to the wall and then start fledging?

The trouble is that, with webbed feet, they have difficulty climbing and clinging on twigs etc although they can climb steep roofs.

Peardrop50 Wed 08-Jul-20 14:07:02

Oh no BlueBelle, that's so sad for you. I hope that he turns up, you must be very worried. Fingers crossed.

Squiffy Wed 08-Jul-20 14:01:06

? Fingers crossed that he’s OK ???? You did a wonderful job looking after him, but I’m sure you’ll always wonder about him.

BlueBelle Wed 08-Jul-20 13:45:30

No to all those question seagulls normally fledge August and he had no tail feathers or flight feathers still only fluff He could only climb as high as his leg could reach
The greenery is mostly low lying stuff loads of Nerines, things that make lots and lots of leaves but ground level nothing strong he could climb into or onto
I just got home from work and gone round and round the garden again lifting all the greenery ...absolutely nothing
His food is untouched I would have expected a cat to eat it his mum is on my roof watching me but not talking or screeching There’s not a feather or mark anywhere it’s like he never existed
I can’t believe anything could get him over my 6 ft walls without a sign of struggle
I hate mysteries but he’s gone and I guess I ll never know
He was with me 10 days

SueDonim Wed 08-Jul-20 13:19:19

Oh no! sad

Could he have used the greenery to hop his way up to the wall and then start fledging?

Callistemon Wed 08-Jul-20 10:52:38

I wonder how old he is?

If he was old enough to leave the nest and fall down the chimney perhaps he was near to fledging and learning to fly.
Have any of your neighbours found him in their garden if he attempted to fly then landed soon after?

No feathers is a good sign.

Squiffy Wed 08-Jul-20 10:43:49

Oh no ??? Hopefully he was so well camouflaged that you didn’t see him where he’s hiding. Could he have climbed up into one of your shrubs or a tree? Clutching at straws …

BlueBelle Wed 08-Jul-20 09:18:21

I know I m clutching at straws too Seacliff I ve been round the garden with a stick lifting overhanging greenery I ve pulled the bins out in case he’d hid behind them in actual fact his nest would have been the driest part to be in it was tucked in a corner and completely overhung by big caster oil leaves (they re huge) like big umbrellas and he would have ventured out for food ?

seacliff Wed 08-Jul-20 09:12:34

It was heavy rain at times last night and he would be cold. I just wonder (faint hope) if he has burrowed down in some dead leaves, or in a dip right at back of the wall, to be more sheltered? I hope he hasn't got ill due to being cold, so isn't coming out. I realise your garden is small and this may be a ridiculous idea. Just clutching at straws.

BlueBelle Wed 08-Jul-20 09:00:31

I fed him last night and watched him waddle to his nest
It’s rained for 24 hours
There are just no clues at all

BlueBelle Wed 08-Jul-20 08:59:06

My wall is 6ft high so no that’s not a possibility
I ve lived here for 40 Years and never seen anything apart from cats and pigeons and small birds no wildlife (unfortunately) I live on a main road with an alleyway road at the back and all the neighbours gardens are concreted over fir their cars I ve hunted outside the garden as well not a feather anywhere His ‘nest‘ is not disturbed at all I had put kitchen roll soft paper and he had dried leaves under a big shrub thats exactly as it was, nothing moved
Surely if a cat got him there would have been feathers around
Total mystery ...I hate mysteries

Susan56 Wed 08-Jul-20 08:56:41

Oh no!Hope he’s ok although the fact there are no feathers is a good sign??????
