Whilst working.
In my work place and if we had to copy a two page document the copy/printer could print on both sides, using just one sheet of paper.
Promised myself I would buy one for home use.
Cost presented me from buying one,so here is what I did.
If its a two page document, put just sheet in the paper tray, and press print.
Then take the one sheet out,put it back in the paper tray, and press the green start button
In my printer if I put the one sheet in with the print facing upwards and upside down and press the start button.
You get a two page document on one sheet.
Hope my tip might help a few members.

Ours prints double-sided - I use that facility a lot. We’ve had it for ages, so not super-new.

We’ ve always had a printer that prints on both sides if you ask for it. It wasn’t very expensive. I thought it was just normal. You just have to ask for it at the point of requesting ‘print’ on the computer.

Just curious about "what" caused this to resurface, but back to the original posting.
Bought new printer, and although I still try to turn the paper over,if any of the blank pages are crumpled they won't even start to print.

Five years old, wonder if all those printers are still working?😄

..pencil a small x ...

That's what I do too. Very small light 'x'on top left on the first run.

My HP can be temperamental doing double sided sometimes- but if I change the doc to PDF preview it always works.

Yes I always do that but make sure you put the paper back in the right way round grin

Me too. To make sure of putting the paper in the right way, I used to pencil a small on the paper then print one page. That way I knew which way to face the paper before printing the 2nd page. Hope that makes sense.

I like that tip,I might give it a try when I ain't tired.

You can set it to print all the odd numbered pages, then turn them over and print all the even numbered pages on the back. Needs a lot of thinking about to get it right but it's very satisfying if it works.

What could go wrong in that case, however, is when paper gets stuck or the printer pulls two sheets through at once.

Always leaf through the stack of paper before loading and get the dearer, better quality paper - a saving in the long run!

A bit like the tip to set printing to grey scale but maybe even more economical - look for a ‘fast/economical’ print option. Fine unless you want impeccable quality and saves ink.

Do wish printer technology would catch up with computer technology
Franbern Then you would really be floundering! grin
Seems like you don't have to worry too much about ink costs; I use generics instead of Canon; much cheaper and just as good!
Cheers

Printers do seem to cause more problems, than virtually every other area of computers Mine is HP office jet, purchased as my old one kept falling out of its wi fi.

Sometimes, I press 'print' and hear it start to whirr and it prints almost immediately. Other times, my instruction seems to need to circle the planet a couple of times, to the Moon, Mars and beyond, and can take up to nearly five minutes to print. No idea why the difference.

I purchased this a couple of years ago and also have the system of paying £1.99 every month for them to replace the ink as and when it is required. A few weeks ago received my first replacement, and still have not needed to actually put it in. So, that is about £50!!!!! Not sure if this was a good system for me.

Do wish printer technology would catch up with computer technology.

BlueSky Just as well you put that "some" in there! grin

Have you tried talking to your printer when it won’t obey? Mine sometimes takes ages to print, goes whrrr! whrrr! Clunk stop several times whereupon I ask it “would it discommode you awfully to print this for me?” And when it finally obeys I say “thank you finally.”

I'm not so polite to it, I threaten to throw it out of the window!

Rufus2 Fri 03-Jul-20 15:15:19

infoman That all sounds terribly complicated! I have a superb Canon printer/ scanner/ copier that does 2-sided printing when "Duplex is pressed! Simple ! Cost $30.00, (£15) All it won't do is print $100.00 notes; I can't buy the right paper! grin
Seriously though! Your tip could lead to both pages appearing on the same side of the print out, or am I missing something, as usual!? confused

BlueSky Fri 03-Jul-20 14:48:43

I'm considering upgrading to a wireless one that can print from a smartphone.

You can also change the settings to print greyscale only if you don't need colour. Saves some ink. DH is insistent on this!

Callistemon Fri 03-Jul-20 12:59:00

Thanks, MaizieD
It must be a problem in communication between PC or tablet and the printer. I may get DS to investigate when he can visit. Our IT friend had problems setting it up so DS came and sorted it out quite quickly a while ago.
I think I need to go back to the settings on the PC and tablet.

It's temperamental and always a pleasant surprise when it does decide to print.

MaizieD Fri 03-Jul-20 12:52:32

I've an HP Office jet, Callistomen, it too can be a bit temperamental at times.

It seemed to turn off its double sided printing function from time to time but then I discovered it was just me it wouldn't do it for, DP could still print doubled sided from his computer.

It turned out that it was the printer settings on my laptop, double sided printing wasn't 'enabled'. I can't remember what I had to do to correct it (senior memory), but I found out how to by googling.. Have you tried that?

infoman Fri 03-Jul-20 12:42:33

the one I have is a black and white brother,it does the job.

Callistemon Fri 03-Jul-20 10:33:45

Thanks, infoman

It as always been very temperamental, even a friend who is an IT whizzkid had trouble setting it up in the first place.
It's an HP.
