Protective gloves when shopping

What is your opinion?

Lots of people seem to be wearing them when out and about but it seems pointless to me.

Tweedle24 Think I said I was wearing gloves because constant sanitizing has caused a rash on my hand. But I still don't see the difference between washing your hands and washing your hands with a glove on them. However.....

Don’t wear gloves, wash your hands or use sanitizer . Make an effort not to touch your face.
The medical profession changes their gloves between each patient and wash hands before and after.

Tweedle24 Fri 17-Jul-20 15:10:13

True but, if not wearing gloves, you would wash or sanitise hands

Callistemon Fri 17-Jul-20 15:04:58

It makes no difference if you touch things with or without gloves; if you touch a virus-contaminated surface it will be transferred as that nurse demonstrated.

hapgran Fri 17-Jul-20 14:58:31

There was a clip on Facebook of a nurse demonstrating that gloves for shopping are not a good idea. She used blue paint to imitate the virus and by the time she had finished, it was all over the gloves, her face, her phone etc...

Tweedle24 Fri 17-Jul-20 14:54:50

Lulubelle Far be it for me to disagree with your nurse and pharmacist friends but I think the saying, quoted a couple of times on here, that wearing gloves is like wearing the same condom for multiple partners is so very true. You say you take them off when you get home but, by then, you have contaminated your car (if you drove there) and your bag, keys, door knob etc.
By the way, I too was a nurse for over 40 years.

Tweedle24 Fri 17-Jul-20 14:48:56

I think it is highly unlikely for glove wearing to become compulsory as they spread the virus more than frequently cleansed hands. I use the sanitiser outside the shop on entering and leaving (if there is any). I also carry antiviral gel in my handbag to clean my hands before applying and after removing mask and after touching anything that could be contaminated.

I have the same problem as Kim 19. My right hand after three months of sanitizers and soap washing is now not a thing of beauty! Both my nurse friends and the pharmacist advise wearing gloves on weekly visit to s/market. Strip them off when getting home and dispose of them. What's the problem? Honestly, all the advice we're getting is designed to keep us safe yet some people behave as if it was an attempt to steal our birthright!

Rosina Fri 17-Jul-20 14:40:56

Just can't see the point of gloves - I avoid touching anything when out, and if I have to then as soon as I get home I wash my hands, rinse with disinfectant, and then disinfect anything I have touched like the keys, car door handles, ignition, window buttons and the house door handle, then another disinfectant rinse for the hands. I fear gloves make people over confident - a local shopkeeer here has the same pair that I swear he has worn since March!

Vintagegirl Fri 17-Jul-20 14:26:39

I used to wear one glove but now with so much sanitiser about seems pointless. I also have managed without supermarket trolley/baskets as have a basket of my own and also a couple of soft cloth bags for overflow. I 'park' basket when full in shop and then collect when ready for till. My hands complaining of sticky sanitiser from several places today but have a bottle of water and towel in car for quick rinse off. I made masks early on and have been wearing for months now, just another habit like taking your keys/glasses etc when you go out.

Kim19 Fri 17-Jul-20 13:04:35

I wear gloves but that is because my hands became dry and flaky with all this use of sanitiser even though I creamed regularly. Much better now, thankfully, but I do, of course sanitise the gloves before I make my exceedingly brief visit to the supermarket. Happily, my face mask is extremely comfortable - still don't like it at all - so I don't think (???) I touch it.

Greeneyedgirl Fri 17-Jul-20 13:04:18

I appreciate you can get biodegradable gloves Gingergirl but in the pandemic they will need to be incinerated.

I dont understand biodegradable dog poo bags because they are also incinerated, unless left out in the countryside of course!

Hardly any LAs put rubbish in landfill any more because there is a huge tax on it.

Gingergirl Fri 17-Jul-20 12:55:28

Many of the gloves are biodegradable. Be careful when buying....and what about disposable masks regarding waste! If you use gloves it only ‘spreads the virus’ within the supermarket the same as using your hands! ‘Problems’ arise if you touch them when taking off, if you leave them on(who would, if you think about it)and then go to other places....but then again that’s no different to having bare hands, not washing them and still going to other places or touching other things afterwards! Personally, I would never wear the same gloves to more than one shop. So if I was in a shopping centre, I wouldn’t just put them on for the whole shopping trip. But then again, I wouldn’t go on a shopping trip right now!?

Washerwoman Fri 17-Jul-20 12:53:34

No.Sanitise my hands before and after shop. Then wash thoroughly on returning home. And the number discarded gloves infuriates me.

Sussexborn

Have bought some masks but haven’t used one yet. I’ve been wearing a scarf that I’ve pulled up whilst queueing or inside the shop.

Don’t understand why so many people leave their nose uncovered!

Gloves are totally pointless coronavirus doesn’t sink into the skin
Unless you change them every time you touch something I can see no benefit

Nanaval4G Fri 17-Jul-20 12:40:03

I bought a box of disposable gloves while I was out shopping yesterday, only to find when I got home that I had bought small, I never thought to look on the box what size they were.
Tried one on and it took so long to ease it on I won't be wearing them, but after reading this post I feel a lot better about it. This afternoon I am going to make a holder for my sanitizer which will clip on the outside of my handbag so that I can use it at regular intervals whilst out shopping.

Greeneyedgirl Fri 17-Jul-20 12:36:02

GrannyfromWilmslow Many of the antibacterial gels do contain 60% alcohol. You have to check the contents because not all may.

When I started nursing we didn’t wear gloves and it made us very mindful to wash our hands frequently. I have seen nurses, I stress not since coronavirus, using gloves without changing often.

I think they give a false sense of security, and picking different items up in shops you are still transferring contamination, plus they need to be taken off very carefully, and what about the plastic waste we are accruing?

Calendargirl Fri 17-Jul-20 12:10:20

Seems lots of masks and gloves are already in the sea.

Why don’t people put them in a bin or take them home to dispose of?

GrannyfromWilmslow Fri 17-Jul-20 11:32:07

Haven’t ventured out to the shops yet. Concerned that people relying on hand sanitisers which may not be effective against coronavirus. My understanding is that they need to contain 70% alcohol - quite a few that I’ve seen only claim to be antibacterial which isn’t good enough.

Purplepixie Fri 17-Jul-20 11:30:36

I wear the gloves when shopping and then we will have to wear the masks. BUT I worry what will happen to all of this used stuff afterwards. Landfill?

Quizzer Fri 17-Jul-20 11:28:27

Gloves can give you a false sense or security. I watched a lady in the supermarket load her trolley with plastic gloves on, then she took them off - touching the outsides of the gloves with her hands. She unloaded her trolley at the checkout and paid without them on. Then she picked them up and put them back on to wheel her trolley outside.
The others that amuse and dismay me are the mask wearers who do not cover their nose, or in one case, had the mask on his chin, not covering either nose or mouth!!

SueDonim Fri 17-Jul-20 11:22:53

Wearing gloves won’t stop you from picking up or spreading the virus, unless you use a clean pair between touching each item.

You need to wash/sanitise your hands anyway between each task even if you wear gloves, because you don’t know that there isn’t a microscopic hole in them. It’s easier to just cleanse your hands and cut out the waste.

BusterTank Fri 17-Jul-20 11:15:20

It stops the virus getting on your hands . I dispose of my in the bin outside the supermarket , when I get in the car it's not on my steering wheel . Plus I think it's respectful for when you are touching items in the supermarket .

highlanddreams Fri 17-Jul-20 11:07:44

I'm only using one of our village shops while on lock down and I wear a reusable washable mask .They have hand sanitiser at the door to use on your way in and out but I've got my own so I use that instead. I've had a cut on my finger recently so even though it's covered with a clean plaster I've been wearing a latex glove over it when shopping for my own protection more than anyone else.
