Mine was young girl by union gap, I remember going off excited to good old woolies with my pocket money

Chirpy chirpy cheep cheep by Middle of the Road. You never hear it on the radio, though there is a good reason for that.........?

Mine was Diana by Paul Anka as well. The second was Hound Dog by Elvis. My older brother bought Tonight Josephine by Johnny Ray and Singing The Blues by Tommy Steele. They were all 78s and are long gone but the memories are still vivid. My two friends would come to my house on a Friday evening when my parents went out for a couple of hours, they would bring their records and we would dance to the record player non-stop. Sadly both my friends have now passed away so I can’t share the memories with them any more, they were such special friends and we had such good times together.

I didn't have a record player, but I remember my brother buying 'Telstar' and playing it endlessly.

Rock Around the Clock. When DDs eventually broke it (oh those fragile 78s!) I replaced it with a Comets LP which is now on the memory card in the car.

I love so many of your first singles! Band of gold is one that I know verbatim. Ride a white Swan is up there too. My first single was Black Night by Deep Purple. Such a wee rocker!

GrannyGravy13 Thu 16-Jul-20 12:57:51

My first single was Band of Gold by Freda Payne

My Mother thought I was mad as we had juke boxes in all the bars of our pub and couldn’t understand why I wanted to start my own record collection.

Oh, we'll show our age now!

Diana by Paul Anka
It could have been 2s 6d, a week's pocket money.

shysal Thu 16-Jul-20 12:54:45

Mine was Lonnie Donegan's Battle of New Orleans on a 78 rpm record.

Marydoll Thu 16-Jul-20 12:53:29

Puzzler, I had forgotten that one. Off to add it too. I could be here all day. grin

What a gentle, uplifting thread. Thanks TrendyNannie

My first 45 record was “Cottonfields”, The Beach Boys in 1969.
I think Brian Wilson is still alive and nearly 80.

Kate1949 Thu 16-Jul-20 12:44:38

Oh I loved Terry. Our neighbour is called Terry. Every time I see him that song goes through my head!

Kate1949 Thu 16-Jul-20 12:43:04

It's lovely Marydoll I loved The Hollies. Tony Hicks was one of my (many) teenage crushes. He still looks good now. smile

FarNorth Thu 16-Jul-20 12:36:51

King of the Road - Roger Miller

Marydoll Thu 16-Jul-20 12:30:27

Kate1949 I still love that song and have just added it to my Spotify list. grin. Thanks for the reminder.

Mine was -Leader of the Pack by Shangra-Las and Terry by Twinkle myself and friends bought them when we were at school. I played them over again and again until my mum took them off me telling me I was too young for that sort of music. She could have been right it was about teenage drama and boys.

Those were the days !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Terry by Twinkle!

I thought I was the only person to have heard of that song.

Over the years I've mentioned it and people just looked at me blankly!

Fabulous song!

PinkCakes Thu 16-Jul-20 12:25:18

Ride a White Swan, by T.Rex

Although I became a mad Beatles fan, the first record I bought was Just One Look by The Hollies. I still love it now.

Marydoll Thu 16-Jul-20 12:19:37

Mine was The Most Beautiful Girl In the World by Charley Rich.

I got a summer job in the Knorr factory and bought a record player from Comet with my wages, but had nothing to play on it! grin.

I loved all those others mentioned. Happy days indeed.

Lucca Thu 16-Jul-20 12:18:20

From a jack to a king......

EllanVannin Thu 16-Jul-20 12:17:52

Then it went on to Lonnie Donegan, which mum liked as well grin

EllanVannin Thu 16-Jul-20 12:14:29

If I remember rightly it was 6/9p.

EllanVannin Thu 16-Jul-20 12:13:07

Livin' Doll--Cliff Richards. I still have it somewhere and its middle is green.

gillybob Thu 16-Jul-20 12:09:29

Oh stop it !

I love 2,4,6,8 Motorway too Scentia smile

In fact I pretty much love everything from between the late 60's and the early 80's .

lovebeigecardigans1955 Thu 16-Jul-20 12:09:28

Everlasting Love by The Love Affair which I shared with my twin sister as we didn't have much pocket money, probably from the Co-Op. We would have been about 14. They were also the first group we went to see at the Danse de Palais (known as the 'Pally') in Nottingham which is no more.
