Mine seem to say “Score 10 if you can hit the car she’s just washed” ?

All is quiet at the moment, think they must be visiting the inlaws today,.. hopefully.....Betty sounds like she says " shut up Clive"...grin

BBbevan .....do they ever add ‘if you think you’re ‘ard enough’ ?grin

I expect that Mumsnetters have birds in their garden that shriek ‘leave the b.....d’

Our pigeons have two rhythms. One says "I'm much too pretty" and the other one says "I told you yesterday". Another bird, I think it's another variety of pigeon, keeps on and on saying "divorce him".Hidden messages there I think!

We have a bird that says “Come on, come on “. . We have no idea what sort it is but DH thinks it may be a blackbird. However it is only here during the summer.

As a child my mother told me the wood pigeons were saying “my toes are so cold”. That was in Hertfordshire.

When ours are fighting I think of Freddie:

Don't stop me now, 'cause I'm having a good time

* Gilly* we are in Norfolk, it could be regional, ours might be a wimpish type that like to moa about their ailments.

They are quite vociferous this morning,I feel quite sorry for Mrs WP , if where married to him he'd be saying me a@#e hurts Betty as my toe would be going up it.

Our pigeons just fight!
They are quite vicious, hitting each other with their wings.

We have lots of collared doves here. They only ever get as far as saying "my toe hurts", or "plant peas sir" wink

Who remembers learning at primary school about yellowhammers saying "a little bit of bread and no cheese"?

gillybob Fri 17-Jul-20 22:44:52

Wondering is it’s code for something ?

gillybob Fri 17-Jul-20 22:44:33

Well downtoearth I’ve studied my (Geordie) wood pigeons today and it seems they say “bucket of coal” over and over ......trouble is we are all gas central heating round here so I’m confused confused

downtoearth Fri 17-Jul-20 22:08:30

Sounds more like Victor Meldrew Merlot...

lemongrove Fri 17-Jul-20 21:23:18

Plant peas sir, do do, is exactly what the pigeons here shout down our chimney every evening, they must perch right on top of it, we had to turn the tv up to drown out the racket from them tonight.angry

merlotgran Fri 17-Jul-20 19:41:20

Do they say it in a Frank Spencer voice??

downtoearth Fri 17-Jul-20 18:12:49

Henetha .It may well be Trevor telling Betty his toe hurts

henetha Fri 17-Jul-20 11:16:56

Wood pigeons are forever called Trevor in our family, ever since my little granddaughter aged 4 was asked by her very keen bird-watcher dad "What's that bird called?", thinking that his teaching would have sunk in by now. A look of sheer bewilderment crossed her face and she shouted "Trevor", in desperation.
There are loads of Trevors around here. At the moment they keep eating the grass seed which I recently sowed to fill a bare patch.... Bl***y Trevors! (I love them really!)

MiniMoon Fri 17-Jul-20 10:16:32

I hear the pigeons saying "I love you, I do".

Very annoyingly they shout it from our chimney pot, early in the morning.

rubysong Fri 17-Jul-20 09:14:56

My late mother used to say the pigeons had heard Irish cattle thieves planning their next theft and were saying, ' tak two coos Paddy,'

gillybob Fri 17-Jul-20 08:26:22

We get loads of wood pigeons in our garden downtoearth so I will be listening out for “my toe hurts Betty” smile

Polly99 Fri 17-Jul-20 08:15:19

My mother used to visit her grandparents who lived in the countryside with a large vegetable garden. She was told that they were saying "Plant peas Sir, do do". Very apt as they would love to come and feast on the crop if given a chance !

An Email in my junk folder showing snippets from netmums chats caught my eye.

Someone had written about the woodpigeons having a conversation
With each other, Mrs woodpigeon speaking quite lovingly to Mr WP
Who replies with what sounds like "My Toe Hurts Betty."

So laying in bed listening to the birds, as you do, this stuck in my mind, and I heard it," My Toe Hurts Betty".

I now cannot unhear it, it is driving me mad, like an annoying ear worm.

Listen for it at your peril
