Had another fall and now the wardrobe rail is broke.

Hi all,
I was leaning in the (built-in) wardrobe fixing my clothes on the back rail when I got a pain in the leg that was mostly supporting me and I turned my ankle and sort of twisted and fell onto my scarf box and all of the things I keep on top of it, and all of my weight went on the (old and flimsy) front rail, subsequently breaking it.

My clothes are now on the floor of the wardrobe, I am in a lot of pain and I don't know where to get another rail. I'm not sure if the rail is fixable either, but I will get a relative to have a look at it, he's very handy.

It was quite a bad fall. I'm posting here as all of you are so lovely and thought a chat with you all would cheer me up. X

On a previous thread you mentioned a new notebook, and asked for suggestions how you might find a use for it.

I suggested an accident book, sadly this could form the first entry in it.

What a good idea, Calendargirl.

The bag of frozen peas is a good idea too Flyinghandbag, and if you feel peckish they are rather nice to eat frozen.

I'm quite good at falling over too so I never wear high heels now. I can fall over my own feet.

It could be worse if it's just the rail that is broken.

Flyinghandbag - I've read some of your posts in the past and your problem seems so much like mine. Tumbling over due to (probably) poor balance and leg weaknesses.
We're an accident waiting to happen. I agree with those who say a bag of frozen peas, best to do it soon after the fall.
Never mind about the wardrobe rail, our bones are more important.
I asked my GP to send me for a bone density test - I can cope with the the scrapes and bruises and sprains but if I broke a bone - that would be the end of my independence.
Thank God the results were good for my age. Try to eat a healthy diet.
Hoping your confidence returns soon. As they say, if you don't use it you lose it

I have always been terribly clumsy but since my chronic pain started around 10 years ago, my health has really deteriorated. X

I've just written it in my notebook. I'm going to record every single one and keep it in case I need it. X

I hope it doesn’t fill up too quickly. ? ?

Take care!

Ouch! Sprains are so painful as I know to my cost.

Chemists sell ankle support bandages which help a lot in the early stages when the ankle feels very wobbly and unstable.

I hope you didn’t end up with stilettos ? for your forthcoming event!

Oh no Flying! I've got a cousin who has similar accidents, every so often she's off to A&E after a fall or trip. Luckily she only broke her foot once, all the other times she was badly bruised. Do you ever go to casualty or just rely on home remedies? Anyway don't worry about the rail the main thing is your ankle, as others have said rest ice and some painkillers should help. brewcupcake

Oh dear*Flyingh*. Most accidents happen in the home and we lull ourselves into thinking we have made them safe as possible,

Ref: the rails - when you get your handy person in them put your rails within easy reach and as strongly fixed as possible. Hang less on them (although I know how much you enjoy buying new clothes).

More importantly, your ankle. Something very cold like a bag of frozen veg., and rest it in an elevated position as much as possible to avoid too much swelling.

Hope you feel better soon. ?

Hi flyinghandbag I sorry about your fall. It may help your ankle if you keep it raised, with a bag of frozen peas, wrapped in a tea towel, on the ankle. For over a year I've had a tendon problem with my knee. Also very painful. Elevating my leg and the ice pack have really helped. I also use a Freeze Spray during the night. Frozen peas don't work in bed?? You need to get your ankle better in time for the family party and your ?
Hope your relative will be able to fix the rail, should be possible. Sending you a hug. ??

..... and yet, despite these falls you're having, you're considering wearing high heels to a 'do' ??!!! hmm

Hope your injury heals quickly smile

Thanks. X

Nortsat

Sorry to hear this FH.

Could you not strap your ankle with a long scarf, it would give you some support? I keep a couple of crepe bandages in my ‘medicine’ cupboard and find them useful for strains and pains.

Remember RICE:
Rest
Ice (a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel will suffice)
Compression- a strapping of some description
Elevation - prop your foot up on a stool or a couple of cushions.

Take care ?

Thanks! What a good idea to use a scarf! You take care too. X

Oh that’s rotten! I have mobility impairments and have had a few nasty falls, they really shake you up. I’m sure there will be a way to fit a new rail, so please don’t fret about that. Time for some self care, let your ankle heal and look after yourself x

Thanks! I'm sorry to hear of your mobility problems, they really are terrible, aren't they? If the rail isn't fixable I'll just buy a new one. X

You poor thing FlyingHandbag that sounds very painful. You'll need to try and keep as much weight off your ankle as you can.

Do you have anything you can use to strap it up with for some additional support?

Our youngest son like me has low blood pressure, so has to be careful about standing up too quickly. He'd been body building for about a year so was very solid, had a dizzy spell in the bathroom, grabbed hold of the heated towel rail for support and pulled it off the wall, complete with several tilesshock.

I'm sure your handy relative will be able to find a replacement rail.

Hope the pain eases off and remember, try to keep as much weight off that ankle as you canflowers.

Thanks so much for your lovely words! Your son's fall sounds terrible, I don't have anything to strap it up but I'm trying to stay off my feet as much as I can. X
