Pre mask shopping - will you?

I was talking to my niece yesterday and she was telling me about lots of her friends hitting the shops before they are condemned to shopping in a mask.

Will you?

I see no reason why anyone can't wear a mask for a short time. I wear glasses and use an inhaler but have managed right from the start way back in March. As said before, people notice your are wearing a mask and step away from you and give you more space. I even wear one when I meet family.

I will wear a mask for shopping, it makes sense, but I have an essential 7 hour train journey next month and because I have a breathing problem I won't be able to wear a mask for that long, but I would hate to just go bare-faced. My daughter is blind and can't tolerate losing her sense of smell as well so she can't cope with a mask. She told me about the Sunflower organisation which, among other things, can supply a printed card on a lanyard to show to people that you're exempt. I shall wear a mask for as long as I can on the train but it will be useful to have something 'official' to show.

I have been wearing a mask in the supermarket all along.

Have you seen the advice about not wearing masks with a valve?
It seems the rush of exhaled air through the valve is more of a danger to others than not wearing one.

The use of masks is being imposed now, I feel, because there are more people about, the shops have dropped the restrictions on the numbers of customers, social distancing is shrinking, and people back at work don't have hours to stand in queues.
I do find it ironic that until a few months ago there was so much criticism of the use of cars; now it is suddenly acceptable, almost mandatory, to have everything delivered to the doorstep by several different vehicles because of a refusal to wear a mask.
If wearing a mask helps to get the economy going, so be it.

Apparently, you can print a form off the internet saying for various reasons you cannot wear a mask.

I think many will use this form and just not bother with a mask.

Best mask for glasses wearers anyone?

bikergran Thu 23-Jul-20 09:23:32

I am in work at 8.00 tomorrow in the Supermarket when it becomes that we/customers have to wear masks,

What I don't understand is if people on the door cannot challenge them (not that I would want that job, its been bad enough asking them to follow the one way system)

As for the £100 fine, who is going to implement it...totally confusing.

Not yet clear if staff have to wear masks as we are behind screens.

Lets see what tomorrow brings hmm

Susan56 Thu 23-Jul-20 09:22:29

I don’t understand why people won’t just wear the blooming things and stop moaning about it.

How long do people spend in shops that it is going to be a problem for them?

I wear glasses and have asthma, two of the reasons people are giving for not wearing them. Its not great but if it protects me and others from the virus then it’s a no brainier.

I have tried several different types of masks and have found the one I am most comfortable with.

jacalpad Thu 23-Jul-20 09:21:55

There are so many different patterns and tutorials for different types of mask. It is bewildering! I have settled on a pleated mask which uses quite a lot of material compared to others, but it seems to fit all the family and give really good coverage. Guess what I am doing all day today .........!

EllanVannin Thu 23-Jul-20 09:17:11

Some of them look like trusses grin---following on from MawB's joke.

Ah well, it's only 7 months too late !!

Not particularly looking forward since I've managed locally minus a mask and spend most of my time indoors.

LuckyFour Thu 23-Jul-20 09:15:36

I've been wearing a mask since I started going into shops. Why on earth not. I find when people are walking towards you and spot the mask they take a small step to one side as it reminds them to keep their distance. It works all the time in the supermarket.

I have a bad feeling about why craftyone says her mask will slip down over her nose, but I do hope I’m wrong.

Jaxjacky Thu 23-Jul-20 09:12:43

I don’t mind wearing a mask at all, if you have the metal insert they don’t slip down. If someone in a shop was displaying anti social behaviour or stealing, the shop would deal with it, why not those who won’t wear a mask?

Nagmad2016 Thu 23-Jul-20 09:12:41

I can't understand why people wait for the Government to tell them how to protect themselves, then blame the Government for not acting quicker/clearer. When we know there is a dangerous virus and thousands have died, surely it is our responsibility for our personal care and our loved ones. We have been wearing masks since March too, and intend to continue for the foreseeable. I will shop on line as much as possible and click and collect food shopping, as I do not qualify for home delivery. I certainly do not intend to visit shopping centres and busy leisure spots for some time yet.

Susieq62 Thu 23-Jul-20 09:11:34

Started wearing a mask weeks ago for shops. Not great but not dreadful. Just get on with it , a bit like seatbelts isn’t it?
My fear is that many won’t bother, a bit like the family of 5 walking side by side at Bridlington on Monday not giving way to anyone. They are the ones who required educating and reforming but they know their rights as opposed to responsibilities!

Greeneyedgirl Thu 23-Jul-20 09:09:16

Well I will feel a lot happier shopping when everyone (hopefully) is wearing one after my experience of crowded queuing up the aisles in M&S last week, with no distancing, and I was the only one wearing ?

Callistemon Thu 23-Jul-20 09:05:54

craftyone

yes, I am well stashed here. I even bought butter to freeze. If I have to wear a face covering, it will slip down over my nose when I am in the shop, I am neither a sheep, anxious, brain washed or scared

Try the Olsen style of mask and, if possible, put a nose clip or piece of pipe cleaner in it.

If I can make them you can, craftyone, with all your skills.

Agree with you Lucca about our whinging, no wonder Aussies call us whinging Poms!

They've been doing a fair bit of their own whingeing!
And ignoring the rules too, hugging in shops, trolleys not wiped down, no hand sanitizer, laughed at my DD for wearing a mask etc.

Elegran Thu 23-Jul-20 09:02:14

craftyone You of all people are well able to sew a small dart in your mask to make it stay up on your nose.

mcem Thu 23-Jul-20 08:59:18

Shoppers in Scotland seem to be coping without stockpiling! Not aware of panic attacks or hysterics either.
90%+ compliance as far as I can see. Simply getting on with it!

Ellianne Thu 23-Jul-20 08:25:09

Yes I agree, Lucca, and if I saw a shopkeeper sending someone away for not wearing a mask I would use that shop all the more. At least I would feel that shop was making an effort to be as safe as can be.

Grannynannywanny Thu 23-Jul-20 08:22:07

craftyone why will your mask slip down over your nose? I’ve been wearing one for months in the shops and this hasn’t ever happened.

Masks are designed to cover the nose and mouth and they don’t slip down. I do see folk every day in the shops who are selfish and careless enough to wear them below their nose. But that’s a different story

Lucca Thu 23-Jul-20 08:20:25

What the .... but don’t just blame the youngsters I ve met a good few (mostly older men) not up for it
It’s going to be fun tomorrow in our shop if any don’t want to wear them because we have instructions not to challenge anyone who won’t wear one so basically we can ask them to but if they say no that’s it
Daft daft ruling again needs to be all or nothing everything has been so darned woolly all the way through

Why don’t you have to challenge them, I thought it was compulsory ?
