It’s 41 degrees in the shade!

Isn’t the contrast in our tiny country extraordinary?

Here in the south it’s been hot, humid and dry for weeks, yet there have been comments from some members living in the N.E who have had a wet cool miserable summer.

We are never organised for extremes like this.
It’s the same in some winters when we get disruptive snow.
Because it doesn’t happen every winter, it doesn’t make economic sense for councils to invest in snow ploughs like they have in Canada for example.

Likewise we are not geared up for a hot summer.

Last night I ended up having a cold shower about 1am ! It did help.

Was it as hot and humid as this in 1976? Or did I cope better because I was young?

I'm off out for lunch today, the choice of restaurant made solely on the basis of which ones had air conditioning.

I'm glad I live in the north, we only had to suffer 27 degrees which was too hot for me!

Just right up here in cooler North Yorkshire, low to mid 20s. Lots of sunshine and occasional rain.

Yes when my late MIL had her spells in hospital, it was mostly during heatwaves. No air con, no fans, windows that could only be open a little and she couldn't breathe at the best of times! We bought her a desk fan which had to be new in a box for the hospital to allow it.
It has been a hot and humid night and now it's a very hot and humid day. I'm staying put, blinds closed, doors and windows opens, fans on!

East Anglia. 35 degrees in the shade. No breeze. Hotter than Barbados. Legs swollen and painful. Every joint aching and stiff. Not very happy.
I remember when the weather broke in 1976 we stood in the garden in the rain..

I have "cooling towel". It's like a scarf and you soak it, then wring out most of the water and put it around your neck. It works well and you can get them on line.

An elderly lady that I know was told by her doctor to put on damp clothes to cool down. It seemed to work.

Love it when I’m on my own but difficult when looking after a three year old and eight month old.
Can’t take my dog out during the day either but I’ll miss the heat when it’s gone ?

It’s 35 already and the sun ? hasn’t even come over the roof yet so it will get a lot hotter yet. I feel like a damp dishcloth.

This humidity is getting too much now and it is impossible to do anything except try and cool off. The house resembles
being in a sauna even though I have fans all over the house blowing day and night. I thought at last some cooler times were ahead when last night after five minutes of lightening then another fiver minutes of thunder followed by ten minutes of rain that was it. Today it feels semi-tropical and it is now making me feel sick, I cannot eat and am drinking a bottle of water every five minutes which is the only thing that cools me off. I cannot stand this damn heatwave.

Too hot for me, 29 degrees in the shade, outside !! In Southampton, think I'm staying inside. ! No pool, that's the problem

There was a time it could never get too hot for me, but yesterday I felt really ill, even though I was taking things slowly and drinking lots of water and keeping fans going at full pelt.

rowyn. Thanks for your lovely sense of humour. Your ‘ditty’ made me laugh - something badly needed after many months of difficulties for so many people everywhere. As for this
continuing heat it will be a relief for me when the temperatures reduce, and especially for those who are unwell. I recently had another short spell in hospital - no air conditioning and no fans! The UK is not geared up for extremes of temperatures unfortunately. Short bursts of heat when on holiday abroad are fine but here, many find life very difficult. But that said - each to their own. Just slow the pace and drink plenty of water!

Sorry I love this weather…it is so rare for the UK. I have a little usb desk fan which helps keep me cool along with a cold wet flannel and we keep the curtains closed at home and then open windows at night..

Just wish I were nearer to the sea as would love to get up early (as I do on holiday) and swim…

I used to love to sit out in the sun, but the last few years I've really struggled to cope in the heat. Even the smallest job indoors gets me in a sweat. Here in Essex we've had this heat constantly for nine days and it's really draining, and I'm feeling poorly.

I was enjoying a beautiful, typically English summer a few weeks back; sunshine, fresh breezes, gardening was a joy and eating outside a pleasure. I felt happy in spite of the upside down world we are living in. Suddenly I feel as if I am living in an inferno; I can't sleep, have no appetite, shower often and as soon as I am dry I want another, and stare dismally at clothes in the morning, sorely tempted to walk about naked all day as the thought of putting anything on it unbearable.
I hate it - with a passion. It is only the thought of September coming soon that is keeping me going and yes - show me the weatherman who says 'Basking in glorious.....' and when you have all finished punching him I will wade in too.

I usually find the shops unbearably hot in the winter.

At least if you’re cold you can snuggle under a blanket, sit by the fire, get a hot water bottle and a hot drink (if you can stop at home!), but when you’re too hot nothing much works (for me anyway!)

Nobody is stopping you enjoying anything you want to, jane.

I never complain about the cold. I don't mind it too much.
