A polite, but heartfelt request.?

Please, please, PLEASE can people refrain from copying and pasting EVERY previous response to their posts before adding a reply!

All members can read the responses, and probably don't want or need to read them twice.

This is not meant to cause offence, just a request to make threads easier to read and more concise.

Thank you.

I think the complaints are all perfectly valid. It was the tone of the “polite request” that I was uneasy about.

Goodbyetoallthat Sun 16-Aug-20 08:01:58

I must be missing something but surely if you don't like a posters posts/ style why bother reading them & then complaining?

Lucca Sun 16-Aug-20 07:58:04

Bluebelle. Not serious.

Lucca Sun 16-Aug-20 07:55:56

Baggs sorry to be picky but OP wasn’t after a more versatile quote facilty really. As I read it she was saying you don’t have to quote every single post, especially if you’re just thanking them or something. For example you could just write “oh mind your own business Lucca” !!

BlueBelle Sun 16-Aug-20 07:55:19

Blimey ask a friend now
My friend says is acceptable, passive/ aggressive my ....ehhhh .l.lfoot
It’s a shame the quote feature has to be so big with boxes round it and line spacers above and below and if you get someone who uses it almost every post in some threads it takes up a lot of room, used in moderation it’s probably ok but I still think it’s too spacey
An opinion only

Baggs Sun 16-Aug-20 07:48:23

She’s asleep right now, Lucca.

I think any potential passive aggression could have been avoided by directing the request for a more versatile quoting facility at HQ rather than at posters.

Lucca Sun 16-Aug-20 07:40:00

Oh well passive aggressive then if you say please please please? How about if you just say please once ? Is that acceptable ? (Ask your friend)

Baggs Sun 16-Aug-20 07:33:16

Told someone about this thread and others like it. She thought the request sounded “passive aggressive”.

Oh not just me then phoenix. It drives me mad. I have been tempted to post to ask why it's done but assumed it was a new automatic thing. We managed to answer posts perfectly well without it.

Yes BlueSky you can copy and paste from a smartphone. With an Andriod phone, you just highlight the text you wish to copy and a message will appear in a box above asking if you wish to "select all, copy, delete the selection", Just tap copy. Then where you wish to have the text pasted to hold your finger or stylus on that position and a box will again appear asking if you wish to paste copied text.
Success! Thanks Grandad! smile

BlueSky

Thanks Grandad but can you copy and paste from a smartphone? I can do it from the desktop but not from the mobile.confused

I use smartphones for almost everything I do in text these days as I find it far quicker and easier to carry out all.

Sod the humping around of laptops etc, I have got far too old for that. ?

Baggs Sat 15-Aug-20 09:29:52

Oh, I'm sure there was a reasonable reason for asking again, but multiple pleases are... well... meh.

I guess my position on this is pretty close to orangerose's.

Baggs Sat 15-Aug-20 09:27:37

*but

seacliff Sat 15-Aug-20 09:27:37

It wasn't the first time she'd been asked, so maybe that's why the double please?

Baggs Sat 15-Aug-20 09:27:12

Ah, my post won't make sense. Up till now I've highlighted what I'm responding to by copying and pasting and surrounding the quoted part with signs like ^ and * — the italicising function and the bolding function. They are not difficult, just a bit finickety, bit you get used to the method if you practise. Like most things.

Baggs Sat 15-Aug-20 09:24:30

I suspect the quoting button was added so that people didn't have to highlight what they were responding to by using copy and past and things like .... and .... to distinguish their response from what they're responding to.

I expect I will use it sometimes but the methods I mention above are not difficult if you only want to quote part of a post.

honeyrose Sat 15-Aug-20 09:23:27

I must admit, it doesn’t bother me (use of the quote button) - in fact I find it quite useful to read again what the OP wrote especially if it’s a long thread. I haven’t figured out how to use the quote button myself , I have to say, but maybe i’ll think twice about it anyway as some of you find it annoying, but then again “each to their own”!

Baggs Sat 15-Aug-20 09:20:33

I think "please, please, please" is a bit naggy rather than polite, or maybe as well as.

Not accusing the OP of this but there does seem to be a tendency on GN to complain about how others choose to post/communicate and about new features. I think GN is big enough that you can ignore stuff you don't like while still enjoying, and joining in, stuff you do.

This thread is a case in point. I've ignored most of it while still commenting and quoting a small part.

sodapop Sat 15-Aug-20 09:16:42

I've used it to quote a post which was way back on the thread but only occasionally and certainly not for a lengthy post. Those are the ones which I find off putting, long posts quoted verbatim.

Chewbacca Sat 15-Aug-20 09:14:15

OPs opening post looks polite enough to me. confused

BlueSky Sat 15-Aug-20 09:13:26

Thanks Grandad but can you copy and paste from a smartphone? I can do it from the desktop but not from the mobile.confused

rubysong Sat 15-Aug-20 09:06:39

I agree Phoenix. This seems to be a very recent thing and, for me, it is spoiling GN. I could do with a 'like' option though.

Marmight Sat 15-Aug-20 09:02:54

I totally agree with Phoenix. For me it’s on a par in the ‘annoying category‘ with writing in capital letters which indicates shouting. How have we managed for the last 9 years without this magic quote button! I just don’t read these posts any more such is the irritation hmm

seacliff Sat 15-Aug-20 08:57:43

I agree with Bluebelle, I just leave that thread when I see so many pasted repeats. To me it is as off putting as someone typing everything in capital letters.

Phoenix DID ask very politely but obviously OP has chosen to ignore her, and will go on her own sweet way xxxxxxxx

Orangerose Sat 15-Aug-20 08:50:13

BlueBelle

It takes up so much space that you get to the point of not bothering to read and when a poster uses it every single post it’s more than annoying what’s wrong with a simple copy and paste oh of course it takes two seconds longer

No. Don’t tell people what to do she isn’t she’s asking politely

No she isn’t.
