Baby Name has caused a rift

GS3 has what I always think of as a dog's name but I've managed not to say anything for 7 years and almost got used to it now. My neighbour christened her first baby Megan and with great strength of will I managed not to ask her why she'd given her a sheepdog's name!

Dogs seem to have what I think of as human names these days.

It could be Spot.
I love Spot the dog, such a shame that the DGC are too old for those books now.

People can be very rude,my son is called after his great grandfathers ,I lost count of the number of people who asked me why he was called that...because I promised my OH'S Granny that I would call any son I might have after her much loved husband and MIL's lovely dad .NOT that it was anyone elses business.I had my answer ready one day when an old friend walked towards me and the pram ,when she asked what we'd called him and I answered she laughed ...I just called my new baby that bet everyone asks why such an old fashioned name ?.I dont think it is its quite Scottish though

I had an Uncle Dick but his proper name was Clifford except he was renamed by an old boy in the village who said it was too long but didn’t shorten it to Cliff.

My grandma was called Clara, pronounced Claira, but when she went into service the lady of the house said it was too posh and she would be called Helen.

When expecting my daughter my MIL asked about names and I told her the boy/girl name we were thinking of.
She said 'oh I dont like that' to the girl name so I thought 'right, that's what I'm having if it's a girl'
Which she was.
So I did.

'Scuse me! Whose child is this?!
And anyway, a name is a name. Just that. Absolutely nothing to do with the qualities the child will develop. See the child not the name.

His parents have the right to decide on a name for their child. If you don't like it put up with it. The child can change it later in life if they want too. We should not judge people by what they are called but by what they do.

Yes I too did not like the name given to my Gd a year in and I now think it’s beautiful. Not ours to name and be blessed that they are here and in our lives

Slightly different but my son and husband were not very forthcoming when agreeing to names for my second son. So I threatened Tarquin.....they soon came to an agreement!!

I was aghast that my prospective gd was going to be named after Popeye's girlfriend/wife and pulled a face suggesting other names. But no, Olive she was called and I got used to it and she's gorgeous. I can't imagine her named anything else now?

I taught a delightful girl once, parents from Zimbabwe. She was called Moreblessing (and matched her name)

I wasn't keen on 2 of my 6 DGC names but they sort of grew into them & they are quite nce shortened.
Not our business TBH & I know one of my sons dislikes his own name unless it is shortened.

I was always kept informed of my DD's preferences for names, and then they changed their mind at the end - I would have hated the girl name, but it was a boy, and I soon got to prefer it over the original idea. My GD on the other side has a 4 letter name that people can never spell, nor pronounce, but it is lovely.

I'm not keen on two of my grandchildrens names, but it's the parents choice. Love my little munchkins, all seven of them.

My eldest GD has a name that has been around for a very long time and features in both mine and DH's family tree. Younger GD has a beautiful Scottish name.
I was chatting to hairdresser years ago and discussing names, on hearing GC's names she says "oh they are strange how did you pick them" ? That was rich coming from someone who gave her children surnames as forenames and sounding as if they should be on Big Brother.

My late MIL suggested naming my first child after both grandfathers. When I pointed out to her that the child’s name would be John Thomas she went quiet. The baby turned out to be a girl anyway.

Maybe it's because I don't have GCs yet, but I don't understand why the OP thought that telling her son or daughter that she disliked her new GC's name was appropriate.

MMJ62 - why did you become so upset? Was it because of your feeling about the name or because of the parents' reaction to your disclosure?

Why risk being cut off over a name? Without wishing to be rude, is the parents' choice of a name going to change your life for the worse?

I do agree with all those saying it is the parents choice and its best to apologise and enjoy having a wonderful grandchild. But, frivolously, I've wondered what you 'd say if you were told "We've called him Saucepan - his mum does love cooking - and his second name is Wheelbarrow, for his Dad, the gardener in the family" What would you say or do? Or, more seriously, if it were a name which would clearly make the child's life really difficult.
