This "quote" thing. ?

Hello all, good wishes to you.

I've noticed that there are more uses of the "quote" facility.

Yes, it's very useful when wanting to refer back to a specific post, but as someone posted (so sorry, but I can't remember who) "you wouldn't repeat someone's comment/remark before responding to it in conversation" (or something like that) so why are so many people doing it? confused

I'm going to say something really controversial now. You have been warned.

Re kids' books.
I've been known to rip out substandard work with *gay abandon*shock

Oh, now, FH treading on thin ice here, and please don't call me "darling", darling!

Oh, my knees are knocking, honey. X

haven't we had this exact same discussion, with or without barbs, about a month ago ?
what's the point of repeating it ?

Marydoll Sun 04-Oct-20 00:16:06

Please don't try and pick a fight Suziewoozie. ?

I didn't mention certain poster nor someone.
It was a general comment about the whole thread! The niggling adds nothing to the discussion.

I suspect it will eventually be deleted, if the barbs continue.

Here we go again! ☹️

Why can't we just have a civilised discussion, without the barbs?

Are you meaning me or the OP? If you mean me I’m fed up of snidely ‘someone’ ‘a certain poster’ etc and it being absolutely clear who is meant,

The quote facility can be useful. However, on occasions you can have posts which quote a considerable number of people quoting each other. It then becomes tedious and takes up so much room.
What's wrong with just quoting the relevant part in italics?

Well, this thread has drawn someone out of the woodwork! grin

Nice to see someone posting on a thread other than one that they have started, even if if it is only to make snarky comments, albeit with kisses on the bottom!

Where exactly was I snarky? Do take in some ironing or take up a hobby, anything to occupy you, darling. X

Why don’t you say who you mean rather than ‘someone’ ?

Add comment | Report | Private message | Quote

This appears at the top of each comment, ginny. Just click on 'quote' and the comment you are replying to appears above the comment box so you can reply to it.

ginny Sat 03-Oct-20 23:27:39

Erm, dare I ask, how do you use ‘ and where is the quote ‘thing’ ?

Now now, Vickysponge and whatever Flyinghandbags latest reincarnation is, play nicely girls!

The OP was a general observation, quite a few people use the"quote" facility, and my post was a general observation, however if you chose to take it personally.............

I thought we were playing nicely! ?

merlotgran Sat 03-Oct-20 23:11:53

All I had to do was click on quote and that was that.

You're right, Oopsminty although I've used italics in this case.

As well as copying and pasting, I would check the spelling of the username I'm replying to then preview the whole reply just to make sure I haven't made a mistake(s)

It can sometimes be a bit long winded to get it right and avoid further confustion.

The quote facility avoids all that.

Aldom Sat 03-Oct-20 23:09:52

I agree. The telly has been awful tonight, but this thread has more than made up for it. Off to bed, smiling. smile

suziewoozie Sat 03-Oct-20 23:05:14

Urmstongran

I take it you must use the option a lot return? Like anything in life - less is more!

Really ?

Oopsminty Sat 03-Oct-20 23:03:28

Take that above quote for example

Had I just said Thank you! into thin air nobody would have known what I was referring to

Had I used the tricky asterisk malarkey I'd have had to copied and pasted the Well said x comment, along with the name which I would have needed to double check to make sure I'd spelled it correctly.

But no!

All I had to do was click on quote and that was that.

Brilliant smile

Oopsminty Sat 03-Oct-20 23:00:31

Vickysponge

Oopsminty

I think the quote facility is an excellent idea

Well said x

Thank you!

Makes perfect sense, NfkDumpling!

I never did get to read what happened in the end of the "child's work being ripped up" thread Lucca? Did it get resolved in the end?

Ellianne Sat 03-Oct-20 22:48:00

Oh yes Lucca, that one was funny. Two steps forward, three steps back.

NfkDumpling Sat 03-Oct-20 22:44:54

I use it a lot in the family WhatsApp group when there's several people chatting so it's obvious which comment I'm replying to.

I only use it on GN when its a short comment otherwise it's not obvious which bit of the comment being replied to.

If that makes sense.
