Buying from China

I always try to buy British first,but end up buying things made in China,the only thing i would say is at least some of the poorer workers have work and earnings as little as it may be.

Actually, Taiwan has already been mentioned, I will throw Hong Kong into the mix.

To NotAGran55, I try very hard not to buy Chinese manufactured goods because of their appalling record on human rights. I would buy something made in Taiwan as they are holding out against China.

Dualit makes toasters made in the U.K. but only the more expensive models. The cheaper models are made in China.

Sadly Pfaff is now owned by a Hong Kong holding company, along with Singer and Husqvarna. So it would seem all sewing machines are now made in China

I buy British if I can! Most of my clothes and shoes were made in the UK.

When I was replacing my sewing machine about 20 years ago I did research and found the only machine made in Europe was a Pfaff - almost everything else comes from Taiwan whatever is the make.
When I replaced my hand mixer I bought a Dualit - made in UK and their after sales service is extremely good and no quibbles.

I bought what I thought was an absolute bargain recently. The perfect leather cross-over handbag. I didn’t know it was coming from China until I emailed them to find out where it was! Delivery took over a month and when it arrived it definitely was not leather. I am afraid I could not be a***d to return it. I suppose the price (£50) was too good to be true.

I felt a boycott on Chinese made goods would be good too.
I needed a large acrylic dress maker`s ruler recently.

I searched ebay....£8 or so but all made in China.

I felt I MUST support British businesses, so I paid £20 and ordered a ruler from Derbys...it came and yes, stamped with MADE IN CHINA!

I didn’t buy something this weekend that I thought was a good idea because it was made in China. I can live without it.
The thing I was buying had a brilliant write up in the Times yesterday. I looked on the website. No information about its origins so I went on Amazon and asked a question. Got my answer- designed in Denmark, made in China.
I did buy a mattress cover from a local, family owned shop in town that was made in the EU.
I am really trying but it is so difficult, you have to be prepared to ask the questions and say no if the answer isn’t what you want to hear.

glammagran I empathise with your frustration. No longer will I buy Dyson vacuum cleaners. Since their move to Singapore they seem to have an inbuilt obsolescence about them. They work perfectly for about four years then simply give up.

The one comfort that I take about Chinese made products is that in the process of becoming the world's manufacturer they have lifted eight hundred million people out of poverty. But that's another story.
