Hi all
I sometimes ponder over the meaning of posters' usernames and thought it might be an interesting topic for a thread.
My own "maydonoz" is the Turkish word for parsley, to reflect my many years living in Turkey, previously and also enjoy cooking so use many herbs, including parsley.
Some of you may wish to share your username meaning too.

Janiepops Tue 20-Oct-20 17:01:23

Nickname my dad called me when I was very young, especially in the mornings when I climbed into bed between mum and dad, “here she comes again, our little Janiepops “
I’m 68 now! but the memory is precious.

Coughdrop Tue 20-Oct-20 16:59:20

My Nan used to tell me I was a right 'coughdrop" and laugh. It used to make me feel very loved, which I was but I never knew really why she called me that. Just a comical and loving thing I suppose. My Grandad called me blossom.

grannybuy Tue 20-Oct-20 16:42:53

My DGC call me this because I buy them a fair bit - re clothing, shoes etc, as well as occasional treats. They have also called me Granny Chocolate!!

Kartush Tue 20-Oct-20 16:41:34

Mine is the name of a blind snake, a character in a book my eldest had when she was little. The snake lived with creatures called hairy eyefuls who were so busy trying to see everything beautiful that they saw nothing so the little snake showed them how to slow down and appreciate life. In the book the snakes name had a C in it..... i never was good at spelling

Quilty Tue 20-Oct-20 16:40:30

Guess what.......I enjoy quilting!!@

dubaigran Tue 20-Oct-20 16:32:29

How interesting!
my name is real and is translated from Greek as "hospitable" (our names are usually translated from Greek like many). I am very happy to help others in real life

Ellan Vanin I had often wondered if you were Manx and had intended to ask. The Isle of Man is such a beautiful place. Many years ago we had hoped to live there but sadly it didn't happen. We still like to visit as often as possible.

Gin Tue 20-Oct-20 16:23:22

Mine does not relate to alcohol!

Puzzler61 Tue 20-Oct-20 16:21:45

I like doing puzzles. I added a number as there is also a
Puzzled on gransnet (similar username but different meaning).

Damdee Tue 20-Oct-20 16:18:54

My name is what my granddaughter used to call me before she could say Grandma.

seadragon Tue 20-Oct-20 16:12:19

I have been obsessed with seahorses since I discovered they existed and were not figments of a fertile imagination. Then I discovered sea dragons: - seahorses in party frocks!! Just right, except I hate parties....

Thank you all for your posts it made fun reading them.
Missdeke, Snap, I also lived in Turkey for 13 yrs, in two separate times, one over 2 yrs and the second for 11 yrs.
Were you always in Alanya? I was mostly in Ankara and Istanbul for 1 yr.

leeds22 Tue 20-Oct-20 15:58:29

Shows a complete lack of imagination. I was 22 when I moved to Leeds. Will try to think of something more exotic,

HootyMcOwlface Tue 20-Oct-20 15:37:52

I got mine from a joke (around the Boatymcboatface time) which made me laugh. I can’t remember the joke but the name stuck in my head! (I thought it a hoot ?). I’m pretty unimaginative thinking up clever names myself and it was all I could think of when I joined!

Ohmother Tue 20-Oct-20 15:34:21

When you get to an age where your kids think you’re crackers. I can hear my kids saying this to me. I don’t care. ?

Pinkrinse Tue 20-Oct-20 15:32:21

‘Cos I have pink highlights in my hair!

Braganza Tue 20-Oct-20 15:22:48

When I first signed up to GN I was volunteering around the corner from Braganza Street in S.E. London - just thought it was a fabulously exotic name!

Acciaccatura Tue 20-Oct-20 15:22:40

The definition of acciaccatura is a grace note in music played as quickly as possible before the main note. When I was a child, my music teacher called it a crushing note. I thought that would take care of the two sides of my personality ?

specki4eyes Tue 20-Oct-20 15:10:44

I was diagnosed with myopia at the tender age of 8. My mum got me those NHS pink round specs with bendy ear pieces. Kids in my class called me specki4eyes (nice kids huh?). I got contacts in my late teens and used those until the menopause. Then I discovered that I liked wearing fashionable Nana Mouskouri type frames and so went back to being specki4eyes.

Dottynan Tue 20-Oct-20 15:01:05

Self explanatory

Bijou Tue 20-Oct-20 14:50:34

I always wondered about user names, when I was three months old my mother took me to Jersey to visit French speaking aunts and they called me “petit bijou”. Little jewel.
After that I was called Bijou and when I first went to school could not understand why I was called by another name.

Nannasharky Tue 20-Oct-20 14:47:19

Because 3year old GC loved sharks and when he came to stay we always had a new stuffed shark toy for him or something shark related. He started calling me Nanna SharkygrinPlus I used to do all the moves with him to Babyshark. I still do but for my own amusement as he's now into dinosaurs... confused

Llamedos13 Tue 20-Oct-20 14:37:49

Mine is from an expression my husband has been heard to say on occasion!

Bluecat Tue 20-Oct-20 14:34:37

Mine is in memory of my dear cat, Belle, who was part Russian Blue. She was beautiful but very dim. Sadly, she was run over in our street and killed.
