Do you ever just do nothing?

It's quite a nice day here but I didn't go for a walk as I was expecting my son to call. He rang to say he was unwell so I took a short nap, made coffee and have spent the afternoon just looking at the I pad and crossword. I couldn't be bothered going out now so I think I am in for the day!

You bet ,the kids aren't the only ones to have duvet day. DD lives you d the corner full time work 2 kids and husband who works shifts, we meet up every Sunday afternoon but one Sunday every month or so when all of them are at home they have a PJ day and I have a duvet day, for both of us it goes like this.
Shower, favourite PJ s, film or box set, and very little food cooked, casserole from freezer or the like.

Absolutely! After being diagnosed with a chronic illness (years ago) I HAD to learn to relax and let go of the need to be busy (otherwise I felt guilty). My very wise doctor told me that the 3 Pillars of Good Health are: Diet, Exercise, Rest (including good quality sleep). The first thing I did was buy a lovely hammock for the garden and have spent many a happy summer's day out there doing diddly squat. My health has improved loads since I let go of all that stupid guilt.

Oh Stephenmarra I am the same, though occasionally I'll remember to finish the first job that I have started before I move onto the next one but that only happens occasionally

I do nothing in the sense of drinking coffee, watching TV, listening to music, or reading a book, which I gather from this thread can constitute doing nothing.

To me doing nothing is something completely different, it is doing nothing at all.

I'm not good at doing nothing, as I prefer tasks that I know when I have finished. Nothing goes on and on and on.

I’m glad I’m not the only one I get up early every day to let the dogs out and feed them then make a cup of tea and if it’s cold and wet I hope back to bed with a book

Didolizzy Sun 25-Oct-20 14:42:51

Brilliant!!?? I can relate to this more and more.

Bijou Sun 25-Oct-20 14:57:37

I class reading or watching TV as doing something. Things I unfortunately have to do a lot. I wish I could do more

Stephenmarra Sun 25-Oct-20 15:03:22

Panda & tara It's a curse, you spend all day "chasing your tail" very little gets done yet you feel you've never stopped.

I can’t just do absolutely nothing, but I much prefer reading, knitting, watching tv etc to doing housework.
My daughter, on the other hand, never stops. She’s always wiping down, plumping up cushions, faffing about doing something.

I treated her to a nice new steam mop this week, because she’s very kind to me. She’s delighted with it, especially as it can clean hard floors, carpets, upholstery and also wall tiles and glass shower enclosures. “I must bring it round, and show you all the things it can do,” she said, delightedly.

Devious? Moi?

I've been doing this alot recently and just don't realise how much time has gone by

eazybee Sun 25-Oct-20 16:39:43

Yes, but it usually involves sun and a sun lounger.

Reading a book or looking at your tablet is doing something.

Herbie9 Sun 25-Oct-20 16:56:11

Loved your "poem" Stephenmarra - I can certainly relate!!
Needing a new bed I finally chose one that reclines and can't wait to go to slumber now. Find sleeping much better with a slight recline top and bottom. Watching breakfast tv with an almost full recline is blissfully comfortable with my morning tea and toast, It's so hard to finally get up and try to think what I'll do today. Living in a 2 tier now so I have an excuse?

It’s difficult doing nothing.

That would entail either standing or sitting, doing nothing,

‘Impossible’.

I was retired from work on the grounds of ill health, it took me just over a year to to regain my health to a point where I could function normally. This was done by doing just as Carly said, diet, exercise and rest. I would exercise in the morning, walk, cycle or swim. Lunch and the afternoon was spent just resting on the bed or in the garden reading or just sleeping.
Even now I have no guilt in spending time resting, or just doing nothing. I would say please don't raise your eyes upwards when you come in my house as I do have the odd cobweb.

I love doing nothing and I dont feel guilty about it. Ive earned the right.

Quizzer Sun 25-Oct-20 18:27:21

I am an expert at doing nothing!

LadyHonoriaDedlock Sun 25-Oct-20 18:49:48

I watched a 1950s film, Written On The Wind, with Rock Hudson and Lauren Bacall. One of those films that used to be a staple of lazy Sunday afternoons fifty years ago, quite enjoyable but never gets revived either on terrestrial TV or Netflix.

It wasn't entirely an empty activity, it's for my course in film studies, and I have to analyse it. There's a lot there that I would have missed fifty years ago. I probably won't have to write an essay about it but I may well be called to talk intelligently about it in the Zoom seminar on Tuesday morning.

Aepgirl Sun 25-Oct-20 18:57:42

Frequently busy doing nothing. Most nights before I go to sleep I think of all the jobs I’ll do tomorrow, but as we all know ‘tomorrow never comes’.

Kiwigramz Sun 25-Oct-20 19:14:51

I do nothing most of the time and it’s wearing me out ? ?

M0nica Sun 25-Oct-20 19:26:22

Oopsadaisy you defined your day as ^ nothing done of any consequence' and that by definition is something smile

I am incapable of sitting still for long and always need something to occupy myself, reading, sewing or thinking deeply.

Barmeyoldbat Sun 25-Oct-20 20:02:42

It keeps going through my head the line in a song.... busy doing nothing....... but can't remember what comes next.

Lollin Sun 25-Oct-20 20:08:27

stephenmarra grin You have my efforts spot on!

Kim19 Sun 25-Oct-20 20:30:28

Bob.....busy doing nothing working the whole day through trying to find lots of things not to do. Busy going nowhere isn't it just a crime. I'd like to be unhappy but I never do have the time.

I was listening to radio 2 this week. They were discussing Niksen which is a form of relaxation. Might try it some time
