Great.
As if we don't have enough to make our lives difficult.
The fireworks have started.
Around her the damned things will pretty much be a constant from now until mid-January.
Poor, poor dogs; cats; birds and small pets; wild animals; farm animals; farmers; people with babies and young children; people with dementia; people with PTSD etc etc etc. angrysadenvy

Silent fireworks are the way forward.

Actually I think they should be banned from sale to the public, as they are in other countries.

Namsnanny That's exactly what was done for my late sister-in-law last year at her request.
After a party in her memory her ashes were put into a special rocket and fired from the top of the hill overlooking the village where she had lived all of her life

Many years ago when my children were little we gave up on garden bonfires and fireworks and went to an organised display by the local council. Middle son was only second son at the time and some idiots let off a rocket along the ground less than a foot from my son's buggy. We about turned and went home. The other two weren't happy but I banned fireworks after that. A few seconds earlier and that firework would have hit my son. I was never flavour of the month when my children were growing up but it was such a scary moment I vowed never to put any of them in that sort of danger again. I still hate fireworks even although they've all grown up safely and have moved on in their adult lives.

There are times (NOW) when I wish I lived miles and miles from anybody! John o Groats would be my perfect location tonight.
How can Poor Hattie take (at least) another week of this?
Before anyone suggests calming remedies- I’ve tried them all -all at once too!

They are lovely, PECS in an organised display, we've seen some wonderful ones.
I love a sparkler too!

But random fireworks, just set off each night between now and NYD, are annoying.

MawB2 Sat 31-Oct-20 19:46:53

Started here tonight FGS I thought it was Halloween not Bonfire Night.

I’ll not be as restrained in my language as OP.
That poor frantic hyperventilating dog ?????

I love fireworks! Not at anytime but for Nov5 /Divali/NYE.

I enjoy a good display, organised or in the garden. I love the swooshing and whooshing, less keen on the explosive bangs though.

All the local community boards will be alive with the for and against arguments... yawn! I do appreciate that some animals find the explosions upsetting but this is, for me, Nov 5 is a lovely family tradition.

At least Sainsburys not selling but sadly aldi and Lidl are. We normally have a public display in our small town but fearful this year folk will have in their own gardens. I feel sorry for the animals and humans who are upset. I am always amazed how much money must still be sloshing around to be wasted in bangs as unemployment here is high anyway without added COVID problems.

There has been a petition about banning the use of fireworks except in displays and on November 5th. No idea if the debate mentioned below will be taking place given the current situation with lockdown. It is worth writing to your MP if you want to express your concerns.

PETITION UPDATE
Parliamentary DEBATE 2nd Nov 2020
Good news. Last years petition will be debated at last. It was stopped because of the elections but had reached 305,579 in a matter of weeks.

Please write to your MP with your feelings on fireworks ahead of the debate in a weeks time. Writetothem.com is the easiest way.

Please also sign our 2020 petition which will support the debate and maybe even get it's own debate next year.

What sounds like a bomb has just gone off. Hard to see the entertainment value of such things.

EllanVannin Sat 31-Oct-20 18:36:32

They're at it again here tonight so I've just made sure the old stray Tom is in his kennel and not wandering.

TrendyNannie6 Sat 31-Oct-20 18:36:28

Yep, detest them, and right this minute they are going off, setting our security dog off barking! Cats are watching them out of the window, hopefully won’t last long

Tallyann1 Sat 31-Oct-20 18:33:01

I believe Sainsbury’s have stopped selling them.. let’s hope the rest follow suit or at least not sell them until the day before...

It was so funny as Terry told us how the fireworks displays were starting and spreading from Hong Kong onwards. They were breathtaking and no pet was frightened!

Lioness68 Sat 31-Oct-20 16:40:31

Jane - a fellow TOG, I quite agree.

Rosina Sat 31-Oct-20 16:32:23

'Spectacular. I can spell but not type.

Rosina Sat 31-Oct-20 16:31:25

Caitlin Moran had an excellent article in today's Times, putting a case for silent fireworks. Why do we need them to BANG? They are pretty and quite spectacluar, so why do they need to be noisy too?

Toadinthehole Sat 31-Oct-20 16:29:59

Most of the time it’s illegal as well. So annoying ?

Callistemon Sat 31-Oct-20 16:27:37

There was an enormous bang just now and birds flying away in haste.
It's not 5th November yet.

Froglady Sat 31-Oct-20 16:16:46

Fireworks here started well over a month ago and I thought that was all right until I realised that it was still September and we had all October to get through; since then it's been pretty much every night.

Maltagozo Sat 31-Oct-20 14:52:27

In this day and age Fireworks should be banned but I don't suppose it ever will be as to many people are making a lot of money out off it and to hell with people's poor pets and youngsters getting hurt! If Fireworks must be around then ban them from public sale and just have public displays by professionals and how do some of these families afford the damn things have you seen the cost?

boodymum67 Sat 31-Oct-20 13:56:14

when are they going to ban the public sale of these lethal incendiary bombs?

So many folk have said for years, that they should only be sold to official groups for public displays.

Terrifies my dog.

cookiemonster66 Sat 31-Oct-20 13:53:51

I am still gobsmacked that the law allows the general public to buy explosives and 'trust' they have common sense when using them!?! Am sure A&E departments around the UK will agree with me!
