Great.
As if we don't have enough to make our lives difficult.
The fireworks have started.
Around her the damned things will pretty much be a constant from now until mid-January.
Poor, poor dogs; cats; birds and small pets; wild animals; farm animals; farmers; people with babies and young children; people with dementia; people with PTSD etc etc etc. angrysadenvy

The usual lone explosion went off at 11pm again. Honestly, it would waken the dead ! Someone does it on purpose at the same time every night when all's quiet.
I'd like to be behind him---with a rip-rap, that'd move him grin

Effing fireworks should be banned. Bl@@@y things. Poor wildlife and animals on fields. My poor old dog who is actually sick with fear.
Hilariously though , I once had a rag doll cat who wasn’t very bright, and she used to sit on the patio watching the fireworks with my little mongrel by her side! Oh those were the days ?

FannyCornforth Sat 31-Oct-20 11:00:35

Flakes - I had to think for a while to work out the abbreviation.
I'm sure that you are not a BOF!
I'm certainly not!
At least with dogs you can keep them in the house, but so many cats wander about.
It's such a worrying time; we don't need something as unnecessary as this to worry about sad

Been quite a lot of sudden huge whee bangs over the past 2 weeks, quite close by, all times of the day and night, and it will get worse, of course, and go on for a fortnight after Nov 5th . It scares our 4 cats half to death, and one in particular is becoming quite nervous all the time. I hate them. Fireworks, I mean, not my lovely cats. Seen them being misused by too many yobs and idiots over the years.

I absolutely love fireworks. Sadly here here in NI it’s illegal to buy them unless you’re able to get a license so its mostly fireworks displays that we go to. I do feel sorry for the poor terrified pets and animals and had never heard of silent fireworks. What a great idea.

Mollygo Sat 31-Oct-20 10:57:54

They do go on for far too long, and are often used by younger folk to shock, just as they were when I was younger.
Our dog goes into the cupboard under the stairs with the coats. She also used to go in there when the GC were younger and noisier and ALWAYS when I hoover, use the shredder or the lawnmower.
I wish they would use quiet fireworks. Displays we see when in holiday in France are so beautiful and the only sound is the whoosh of the take off and the collective oohs and aahs of the audience.
That said, I can’t go back to using a Ewebank for cleaning or a hand mower for the lawn and security demands that we destroy links to ourselves and our property.
I’ll just have to keep the door slightly ajar and keep pushing for quiet fireworks.

I agree - awful things. One of the residents in our street had a gathering on the common ground used by people to walk their dogs and its a childrens play area. It is not large but every year they do it and it is next door to my fence. This was last Wednesday. Now it has started elsewhere and they are so loud! My poor cats. One especially hid under the stairs behind the recycling bin. I agree they should be banned for private use and only for public displays. I am probably sounding like a BOF but so be it.

The best ever firework displays were Terry Wogan's radio ones!

Google search for quiet fireworks. There are loads available. We just need to get the word out.

It wouldn't wouldn't be so bad but for horrendous noise they make. It's like living in a war zone.

Pyewacket Sat 31-Oct-20 10:42:21

Jane10 we have one just like yours. She’s fearless and incredibly nosy. The other cat is too lazy to be bothered either way, luckily for us!

Florida12 Sat 31-Oct-20 10:40:53

It usually starts around min September here right up to New Year’s Eve. The poor cat now only has to hear a gun shot on the TV and she dives under the sofa.

We had the added noise of the police helicopter as well.
These fireworks are explosives, this country doesn’t seem to have any restrictions or monitoring of this

FannyCornforth Sat 31-Oct-20 10:34:41

Well, believe it or not, one has just gone off.
The most enormous, horrendous BANG
DDog is now a quivering wreck

With you all the way. they used to terrify one of my dogs in particular. Sadly all 3 dogs died of old age and we won't be having any more.

Oldwoman70 Sat 31-Oct-20 09:43:16

Most of us had fireworks when we were young - but they were mostly restricted to 5th November and New Years Eve. These days they are louder and used for any "celebration". I agree they should no longer be available to the general public but kept for organised displays only.

Daisymae Sat 31-Oct-20 09:33:46

Hate fireworks. Should be banned for private use.

FannyCornforth Sat 31-Oct-20 09:14:51

Aah Janeflowers
There's nowt so queer as cats.

Jane10 Sat 31-Oct-20 08:50:51

We once had a cat who positively loved fireworks. While our other poor pusses cowered under the sofa she'd rush to the window and stare out at the fireworks bursting in the sky. She had nerves of steel at the best of times and saw off a doberman and an alsation who'd dared to enter our garden. What a cat. Went out one day and never returned. sad

FannyCornforth Sat 31-Oct-20 02:11:07

Excellent stuff GrannyGravy.
Are silent fireworks widely available now?
I do hope so. They must be quite magical.
I can't understand the appeal of a beautiful light show that sounds like a flipping bomb going off.

Brexit Fireworks shock
Spangler - you devil. You've just created the most hellish scenario!

Spangler Fri 30-Oct-20 22:26:00

When I was a boy we bought penny bangers and threw them around, health & safety would have had a field day. But Bonfire night was frowned upon at the catholic school that I attended.
the GunPowder Plot of 1605 was a plan to blow up parliament, overturn the Reformation and restore the country to Catholicism. Any parallels with Brexit?

sodapop Fri 30-Oct-20 22:04:31

Well we may have lockdown and the dreaded forms but at least no Guy Fawkes 'celebrations' here thank goodness. Hope your dog does not get too stressed FannyCornforth

grannyrebel7 Fri 30-Oct-20 20:20:50

I think fireworks should be wiped off the face of the earth! Horrendous things! They serve no purpose whatsoever! I hate them. We used to have a dog a few years back that was absolutely terrified of them. I see Sainsbury's are no longer selling them which is great. Just wish all the other shops would follow suit. Rant over!

Whitewavemark2 Fri 30-Oct-20 20:13:50

Well I’ve plugged it in but there is no smell that I can detect. Dog has snoozed happily through the evening, but not many fireworks?
