Re-knitting sweater

That’s a shame. The said cardigan having been my knitting nemesis, I gave all my spare wool and needles away recently. I did keep my mothers needles, but only because I can’t bring myself to part with them.

I thought knitting same on both sides was just plain knit? I didnt know it had a name (fishermans?) But then im not too advanced, can do plain& purl & a pattern involving slip one or y.r.n. but nothing fancy.?

It looks like patent to me. You slip one stitch and knit the next. Next row you slip one and knit the slip stitches from the previous row.

Greyduster I have tried and unpicked the cable about three times and abandoned it again. There's only a bit of the front left to do.
It will probably be sent off to a charity somewhere anyway as I think I may have put on a pound or two over the last 20 years and cabling may not be the best fashion for me now.

I am due to have a shoulder replacement in 2 weeks. Any tips on how to cope whilst one arm is out of use. I.e. dressing, sleeping etc.

You'll have to sleep on your back, I think, so a pillow to stop you turning on to that side might help.
When my shoulder was out of action, I found pull on clothes were easier, I could manage to put on a loose top then put a cardigan around that arm and just put the good arm into a sleeve, but it was summer.
I did buy some front fastening bras too, they're not very flattering but when i could wear one again they were much easier to put on.

Cables are a mare to pick up on, Callistemon if you leave the work for any length of time. I abandoned a cardigan for over two years and then tried to pick up the antler cables where I had left them and they came out too long. Got there eventually but it didn’t help me to find renewed enthusiasm for the project!!

The knitting you need is:
single rib, but, EVERY ROW PURL 1, KNIT 1 THE ROW BELOW.

Does Youtube demonstrate certain stitches? I’m a sewer rather than a knitter, but I find it easier to watch someone rather than read it.

Mercedes, In the last few years I have broken both my shoulders so I know how awkward it will be for you while your shoulder heals. One very useful tip for you is to buy some front-fastening bras. They are so much easier to get on and off, even after you have healed. I buy mine online from Ample Bosom who do a good range of front-fastening styles and sizes.

Im wondering that as the back is different to the front if its some sort of slip stitch pattern.

To Mercedes - tube bra (google it - many examples) you can pull it up with one hand. Blouses, shirts or button through cadigans. Good luck!

Just spotted this. Few tips before you start new thread. I recently broke my arm. Buy some ponchos, invisible support vests (m&s), light waffle dressing gown.

For anyone wanting to try out different knit stitches, I can thoroughly recommend this book. There are plenty of others on the market too, some with many more stitch examples than this, but I have had this one for many many years, and it has been so useful!

oh wow! I love this thread, I used to be a relatively good knitter way back, then work took over.
now in my small craft club at church, and we can`t meet, I am stuck doing small garter stitch squares,, get someone else to sew them up.

done a scarf in simple k2 p2
so trying so hard to get motivated... that is my problem and this , I really, really hope will motivate me..

Same here, I'm knitting squares of different stitches to put together into a blanket (keeps me calm and out of trouble).

I'm impressed by all these expert knitters who can identify the OP's stitch. I'll use it for the next six inch square I make for blanket using left over wool.

It looks very like fisherman's rib, but I don't think it is because, as geekesse says, it should look the same on both sides.

It could be Brioche stitch, which looks almost identical on the right side to fisherman's rib. Not sure about the wrong side, but worth knitting a sample to see.

Knit over an even number of stitches
Foundation row: * Yo, s1, with yarn in back (wyib), k1; rep from * to end
Row 1: * Yo, sl 1, wyib, k2tog (sl st and yo of previous row); rep from * to end.
Repeat row 1

sl 1 wyib (no comma after the sl 1)
