All searches for tradesman start with the parish magazine, and then move outwards. I am very happy when a local tradesman brings an apprentice with them, but I feel happier if young people are supervised.

We have a kitchen fitter in at the moment, a man in his 40s I would say, we were discussing another job we need to have done and even though it wasn't his speciality, he understood the specific problems we have and the possible solutions and has recommended someone with the necessary expertise. It takes a while for a young person to gain that experience.

paddyanne, I'm with you in giving any repairs/refurbishments to the young people we've known for years, all now struggling to earn a crust.
Some people replace windows because they fancy a new look. Astounding to me given the cost but there we are.

paddyann I live in a listed building, so mainly cannot have double glazed replacement windows, although we do have secondary glazing.

I have never yet met anyone who has replaced double glazing, other than for cosmetic reasons.

But, as I said, not a subject I know much about.

Monica double glazing doesn't last forever,it needs replaced after 10-15 years in some cases .My sons friend is a double glazing salesman and while we didn't need anything done over lockdown my MIL needed a new door so we ordered it from him

.He's really struggling as are many mainly young sales people in that field.
As we knew him the silly boy decided he wouldn't take his commission on the order and let Granny have it at a discount.That wasn't the plan but we will order from him as soon as we need anything to make up for it. Its really tough in the real world not that Sunek understands that ,millions are getting deeper in debt by the day

I have a door monitoring system.It has a handset in the hall that I speak into to ask who the caller is and they have to reply via a speaker,when they use it I can see who they are via the monitor screen I have found it very reassuring.I also have CTV cameras around my home which I hope may deter any dodgy callers

Not only can no one else take out a Power of Attorney for you, but once it is granted, nobody can use it and act on your behalf unless you give direct consent or you have become mentally incapacitated and can no longer make decisions for yourself.

we acquired a note from the internet, could have been age conern, we pinned the note to our outside door, it said no salesmen, no religions , no hawkers, plain for all to see, hopefully it may help you, this is helpful at the moment and also when normal times arrive

We are actually waiting for the installation of new windows. Recently, some bloke called and commented on our existing windows claiming "I see you've had new windows recently" we haven't and the condition of them is dreadful, " however " he continued, "have you considered a conservatory"? He must have been blind, several of our windows have blown seals and are misted up between the glass. Oddly enough, he's regularly seen in our area, even during lockdown.

We have all sorts of callers at the door. Most are ‘appointment bookers’, usually paid only commission.
Gransnetters who ‘put on accents’ and ‘say they are cleaners’ sound as though they have never been in the position of having to work for nothing. Kindness and respect costs nothing.

If you have a no cold callers sticker on your door, any cold caller salesman who knocks is breaking the law

Plus please turn to your right so second camera can take still picture. Yes you have been recorded since you opened the gate. In the last 2 years only had 1 stay and he was a police man who wanted to talk about door step con men !!!

Be polite from behind a closed door for security. Just give a little cough and say you are very sorry but you’re isolating.

Had a girl yesterday trying to sign me up for the scheme to get govt money to make your house more energy efficient. The implication was she was from the government. Doubt that somehow. I was polite but firm that we did not qualify, as people have said, these are desperate times for many.

My mother was always polite but never bought at the door. She told me that it costs nothing to be pleasant and why would you be rude to someone who was trying to earn a living. I follow mum's lead.

Tell them you’re a single parent. Anglian windows made an appointment to measure up for replacement windows & doors but cancelled it at short notice because I had two daughters living at home and no husband. Both girls at university so not kiddies but not earning. Anglia didn’t deal with single mum’s, they said. I used it to get rid of sales pests and it worked a treat.( BT W, Everest didn’t care about my marital status and did a lovely job.)

That salesman may well be on to a good thing: round these postcodes, builders have been doing a roaring trade during the pandemic. Skips and scaffolding everywhere. If people still have an income, money is cheap to borrow.

They do still call around here MOnica, just appointment makers, not salesmen. More for conservatories and insulation and such rather than double glazing though as you are right, most people do have it.

GillT57, the main reason for being suspicious is that double-glazing salesman do not cold call door to door these days. That stopped decades ago, as much as anything because most houses have double glazing.

So if someone comes to your door in 2020 saying they are selling double glazing they should immediately be treated with suspicion.

Could be seeing if anyone in. We were burgled on this week whilst out for 3 hours. Cars on the drive and lights on.
