Is lock down making you lazy.....

Being as the dark nights and colder weather now rolling in i find myself starting to get lazy. In the last LD i worked every day in the garden and also walked. Now i walk for an hour a day and after completing necessary chores, time is on my hands. I have things i could do but i can't be bothered. Before there was a sense of urgency to complete tasks as i had social activities to go to, family and friends to visit and meet up with. In the summer there was the nuturing of plants in the greenhouse and garden and even after evening meal the watering of both to be done. I find myself spending more time trawling on the internet or sitting watching tv and knitting. I dont like it, is this the slippery slope to complete inactivity!!!! I also find that y diet is also up the creek because i get up later i have breakfast later, dont want lunch and make do with a cuppa and some bics around 3ish. Rarely do i want an evening meal but have to cook for DH so make myself eat something. I feel the whole stucture of my daily life has disappeared.

I’m sat down now, although I was out at 6.15am -still dark - with dog and been doing housework since.

Must sort out some Christmas biscuit recipes for children (they are in their late 40s?) to go with their advent gifts.

I always gloss over the unpleasant posts and just carry happily on with everyone else.

Never give those unpleasant post the oxygen of attention and they will eventually go away.

This thread takes me back 65 years:

"Get your nose out of that book and go and play outside in the sunshine. Or you could polish all the silver"!

GrannyLaine, I think the uneasy 'lazy' feeling is to do with my mother's 'Make yourself useful!' or 'Bored, are you? Right, let's find you something to do!' (followed by compulsory weeding, shoe or cutlery polishing - we soon stopped using the word 'bored').

Now, though, I prefer to think that I'm recharging my batteries. We're at the 'semi hibernating' time of year too, so I'm lowering my expectations of what I might do in a day!

Oh come on please don’t have this thread closed down....how sensitive have we become ??

Lucca Mon 16-Nov-20 10:56:08

Does nobody read the WHOLE. thread ? If you do how can you possibly have omitted to compliment our poet in residence on the excellence of her swiftly penned double limerick ?

I think it's quite an enjoyable thread apart from being infiltrated by a new poster giving us orders so it's probably best to ignore such nonsense.

I think it is natural to slow down in the winter, and what's wrong with that after all the years you've probably spent working your socks off.
Absolutely!

I saw the Countryfile programme too and I must say started to think 'whatever next' as Ellie Harrison showed us different ways to approach mindfulness (or whatever). Obviously much of it was filmed in the summer as she relaxed under leafy trees in her t-shirt. Brrr!

I do think a walk in the woods is beneficial, though ?

For those still relatively fit, feeling bored and at a loss, there are plenty of jobs on offer at online and supermarket distribution centres. Being made redundant in June due to the Covid crisis I like many others have taken up such work as demand in many such centres has literally gone through the roof.

We are constantly hearing of the constantly rising numbers of unemployed due to the Coronavirus crisis and yet the worlds largest online retailer "who I have found myself working for" has been extensively advertising job roles in their fulfilment centres and yet finding there are very few takers.

Despite widespread views to the contrary the work can be well paid especially if an applicant is prepared to work unsocial hours and at weekends etc. We see constantly see on the TV news musicians, actors dancers and other production people moaning that they have no work and are getting little support. Well, my advise to them along with many I work alongside of is "get your backside into gear and go along to one of those centres and get yourselves employed".

But of courses, manual work in such places is far below many of those doing all the moaning.

Are you sure ? I hve a young acquaintance whose apprenticeships have fallen through (not his fault) and he need work.

This has been a bonkers thread, going from worries about depression and loneliness during a second lockdown, to sleeping in vans and working in a depot.
Back to the beginning. I think it is natural to slow down in the winter, and what's wrong with that after all the years you've probably spent working your socks off. Add in the unknowns at the moment and you have a recipe for being down in the dumps.
According to Country file last night we should all be trudging through the woods, munching on green bits from the hedge, and pond scuttling (river swimming)
They did say getting outside is good, even in your garden for a walk round. My mum's cure for my post baby blues was to put my hat and coat on and go out for a walk..
Moving to the end of this little winding thread of a journey, there seems to have been some posts which I feel aren't very helpful to the original theme.
My mum also used to say 'if you've got nothing nice to say, then keep quiet'

Goodness I’ve enjoyed reading this thread - although it’s wasted the last twenty minutes when I was going to get up earlier than usual and try to get going. It’s like being with a bunch of my friends in the local coffee shop (much missed lately) where the conversation goes all over the place, one or two offending each other, someone else coming in with a totally new topic, back to the original again, a sudden silence as all heads turn to one member who says something jaw dropping, everyone talking at once ....... Do carry on everyone, I’m loving it! PS - Do birth signs have anything to do with this? I’m a Virgo but a confused one - I love order, neatness, routine, etc., but am too lazy to do anything about achieving any of them.

So sorry about your dog, @tictacnana. I know how terribly hard it is to lose a beloved dog. ?

GrannyLaine Mon 16-Nov-20 08:48:37

Mornings are my best time, sat in bed planning a list of things I might or might not do. Generally one will appeal enough to get me out of bed. My creative side needs me to be lazy, I've never understood the concept of being seen to be busy, busy, busy.

Well I’ve been sitting in bed thinking I’m going to get Up and At It today. Trouble is I don’t know when, and I have decided what the “It” will be ! ?

Whitewavemark2 Mon 16-Nov-20 07:51:30

My trouble is at this time of year I can happily sit for hours reading or fiddling with craft stuff, listening to the radio or even watching tv if I can find something.

Watched historic London yesterday. Quite interesting.

Actually if anyone would care to 're read my post of 18.45, what I said was spouting, rather a different meaning.

Aepgirl Mon 16-Nov-20 07:31:41

I’m always like this in the autumn/winter. I detest the dark evenings, and miserable weather, which makes gardening unpleasant. I make sure all my ‘jobs’ are done early in the day, then just do as I please for the remainder.

Bluesky I havent been wearing make up either. I'm not a work at the moment and I live alone so there doesnt seem much point.! Previously i loved make up,didnt overdo it but loved lipstick! I do still moisturise my skin.
My hair is short and at the beginning of the year i had highlights. Until August as it grew out it was a horrible two tone ! The highlights were cut out and it's now its original colour which it hasn't been for a decade! I'm surprised at the colour which is a rather dull brown, but the biggest surprise is how little the grey shows. I've saved hundreds of pounds at the hairdressers but I miss my lighter hair which I think was more cheerful. I always wear perfume!

MayBee70 Mon 16-Nov-20 00:33:33

No make up for me. If you put it on you only have to take it off again! It’s radio Melbourne that I put on. Love hearing talk of precipitation and adverts for Peter the Possum man.

BlueSky Mon 16-Nov-20 00:20:05

Is anybody no longer bothering with make up? I feel there’s no point with masks, also I’ve let the grey come through the coloured hair, no going anywhere special so I can’t be bothered.

Nanabelle Mon 16-Nov-20 00:00:08

Australia - love it. I downloaded BorrowBox on my phone via our library website and discovered the author Liane Moriarty. The two books I've listened to are set in Australia and read by an Aussie so you can really imagine being there, in the story.

Callistemon Sun 15-Nov-20 23:00:39

I'm often in Australia in my head, Maybee but never thought of putting Australian radio on.
I recorded A Place to Call Home so perhaps I should binge watch it all if the weather's going to get worse here.

MayBee70 Sun 15-Nov-20 22:55:33

I sometimes put Australian radio on and pretend I’m in Australia. As an only child I spent a lot of time fantasising about things and in my old age I’m still doing it.

Grammarian Sun 15-Nov-20 22:28:48

I like the concept of “relaxing” Thank you! It helps to find a good book to read but then like cuppaffull I am up half the night. . I live on my own and family can’t visit so there’s little incentive either.
