Vitamin D and nails

I wonder if it has formaldehyde in it? I use a Rimmels nail hardener that has formaldehyde in it. I bought one from an independent chemist years ago and when I tried to buy more it had been discontinued. But I managed to buy lots of it off the internet. I only use it on the end of my nails so I hope it isn’t too dangerous. I’ve never found anything else that works. Although Avon do some nail strengthening varnishes and their products are very good these days.

I have a bottle of Patons nail hardener which is amazing stuff. It was inexpensive, lasts for years, but when I tried to get some for a friend last year it was impossible.
Has anyone else noticed their finger nails growing extra fast during lockdown? Both my OH and I always seem to be cutting our finger nails these days, yet toe nails are growing as normal.
Strange!

My vitamin D dose has been increased by the doctor -covid- and my nails are the best texture now than they have been for years, no ridges nor splitting. Sadly, because I bit them for 65 odd years their shape can’t be improved. Wish it would thicken my hair.

I have been taking strong vitamin D for years and my nails have been very poor, breaking and splitting. Recently they have started to improve. The only difference is I haven't been using nail varnish as often, and of course all the handwashing.

I’m told that it’s the calcium that improves nail and bone strength. The vitamin D helps the body to absorb the calcium.

Same for me due I’m sure to Vit D. Years ago I used to eat a cube of jelly which improved nails.

Interesting thread this. I’ve been taking Vit D for months due to the virus but it hadn’t occurred to me that my nails had improved. But they have. Mind you, I have been keeping them very short as well as it’s easier to keep them clean. Still not sure what dose of VitD I should be taking, though.

Mine have been better since I stopped using the clear strengthening varnish, phoenix.
A friend used to say it made her nails worse too.

I have taken Vit D too so it could be that, but no varnish at all for months.
If you're washing your hands more frequently then using a good hand and nail cream is probably necessary.

I am also on prescription strength vitamin D and my nails grow quickly and do not split. Because of my job I could not wear nail varnish, even clear and out of habit I snipped my nails frequently to keep them short.

I think the only thing to keep them from splitting phoenix is to keep taking vitamin D and keep your nails short.

Perhaps ask the pharmacist what dose you should be taking.

Please remember you may have osteopenia without
symptoms or knowing it.

I used to have strong nails which I wore long and seldom broke. Then I went through a period where they developed really unsightly ridges and split at top where the ridges ended. However since last March they have grown like mad, despite enthusiastic gardening etc during lockdown. The only one I have had trouble with is the thumb on my right hand which I use for popping tablets out of blister packs. I haven’t taken any extra supplements and can’t account for this at all. I’m going through files at a vast rate of knots.

However, since in my teens every two months I cut them really short and let them grow again.

Phoenix try a good quality hand and nail cream or a nail oil. My nails are like yours but grew well in lockdown with all the extra hand cream with so much hand washing and I was out in the sun a lot doing the garden. Recently they are regressing so I have started taking Vitamin D and upping the cream.

Mine are super strong now after losing them during chemo. I put it down to the extra strength calcium and vitamin D tablets I am prescribed.

I always thought that weak nails were due to iron deficiency.

Thanks Marydoll, the are growing enough for me, can't imagine typing with them much longer, but still splitting very low, in fact painfully so.

Sorry Phoenix, never worked for me, despite prescription strength Vit D tablets. ?
The only that ever worked was a product I took as a student, called, Sylvasun, which claimed to protect fair skinned people from being sunburned . My nails were so long.

Hello all, usual good wishes.

Well, read on here about nails growing after taking vitamin D, so as one who has had awful nails, never been able to grow them to anything near a decent length, thought I would give it a go!

Result! I now have some that are over the tips of my fingers grin but some are still breaking very low down, despite using a clear strengthening varnish.

Any suggestions?
