Hi ....thinking of looking at a move to Filey from the N E ....can't go down to have a look at it obviously, at the moment BUT there are some retirement flats I may be interested in ....does anyone on here know what it is like living there ? i e....things to do, things to join in, volunteer, making friends etc ? Normally I would spend a week in a place to look around, but with COVID I have no idea when I would be able to travel there ....so just doing some research...thanks for any observations ! ....ps I am a Southerner by birth .....would I be considered a 'foreigner' ha ha ....must say I have found everyone in the N E to be lovely .....I would miss it, but looking round for an affordable new retirement flat (the one I bought is now over 20 years old although it is a minute from the coast and has a lot of things (normally !) going on. any thoughts thanks ?

There is a website called Nextdoor.com which is a neighbourhood forum. You could go on there and search for the Filey area and get a feel for the locals from the posts. I'm not sure the set up for posting if you live outside the area, but you might be able to post and ask questions. Good luck.

The town centre and surrounding area is very hilly and steep.

Have you considered joining Filey & District U3A? Google it ALANaV, there's loads of information on their website.

ALANaV, I have sent you a Pm.

I’ve just joined Nextdoor.com for my town so thank you for the suggestion Notinthemanual! You need to have a local postcode to join, ALANaV, so maybe looking on Facebook would be a better option.

A search in FB produced several results.

Filey is lovely. Have been going To Flamborough Head on holiday for a number of years and always visit Filey several days while on holiday. We considered moving there but I have medical issues which require ongoing treatment so decided against it.
If you are a keen bird watcher there is Bempton cliffsRSPB close by and there is always Flamborough Head for bird watching. Walking is wonderful and surrounding country is beautiful.
Shops are good and there are supermarkets in Bridlington and Scarborough if you need them but you can get everything in Filey if you need to. There is a great sho shop. There is a golf course, U3A. Not sure about bowls but there appears to be plenty going on.
Good luck if you decide to go. I would love to.

Ashcombe You're welcome. I hope you find it as useful as I have.

Filey is beautiful but really quite remote.
As another poster said it is also very hilly.
Have you considered Hornsea?
There is more going on for retired people, great services, doctors, churches etc.
There is a really good community spirit.
Links to Hull and Beverley are excellent.

Morning, we moved to Filey in April’19 thank goodness we did before Covid.
All I can say is it’s a brilliant place to live, great amenities, shops etc. There are lots and lots of clubs and activities and plenty of volunteering opportunities.
Filey is both friendly and welcoming and don’t worry my husband is a Londoner and loves living here..
You can’t go wrong!

Ps. I should add that the town centre is completely flat, only the beach road is down a level below. Lots of residents here have mobility problems and enjoy the beautiful Crescent Gardens overlooking the sea without going down on the beach.

Filey is beautiful but, as already said, hilly and a bit isolated. Missfoodlove suggested Hornsea and I'd say that's well worth considering. It's a lovely little town with good transport links, a nice prom and Mr Moo's Ice Cream.
