40 years ago today that John was killed. As a fanatical Beatles fan, I was devastated. Hard to believe it's been that long.

I remember it like it was yesterday (sorry).
I wasn’t a Beatles fan but I did like John Lennon.

A few years ago I went to Liverpool , for meeting in a pub ,anyway after the meeting we did a pub crawl to pubs like Philharmonic ,and work back towards the centre .
Anyway , one of the pubs as got allot of association with John Lennon as he was regular there, pubs name has gone but yes liked the Beatles and considering without John Lennon there music moved and changed the world today .

For all those who loved Lennon- Imagine- it's the one filmed in the white house, so if you don't like it don't watch. Looking at it today I can see how young they both were.

Did you watch the documentary about his last weekend Kate1949?
It was fascinating, if heartbreaking. He was full of life and philosophical about the past and his future.
I was woken up by my radio alarm when I first heard the news report. I remember feeling shocked and saddened.

Oh my goodness, 40 years...

I heard about it on the radio just as I was getting ready to leave my flat to go into an exam at University, I remember exactly where I was.

Kate1949 Tue 08-Dec-20 11:56:09

Yes I did Namsnanny. I thought I knew most things about The Beatles but that documentary was fascinating and sad, particularly when he said how safe he felt in New York.

quizqueen Tue 08-Dec-20 12:25:33

He probably wouldn't be still alive now as he was a chain smoker but certainly didn't deserve to die so young and in such a way. I was a big Beatles fan. Yoko is still looking good though!!!

Namsnanny Tue 08-Dec-20 12:48:38

To be honest I felt really sorry for Julian then and subsequently down the years.
He seems to have been treated quite badly by Yoko Ono.
Which coloured my view of her.

I was still living in Liverpool when John Lennon was killed.I went into town with a group of friends to join the massive crowd standing in front of St George’s Hall.Everybody was in shock, a huge crowd but silent.

Calendargirl Tue 08-Dec-20 14:32:01

Remember listening with shock to the early radio 2 news, followed by Ray Moore’s Early Show.

I think he was from Liverpool, and he started his show by saying it wasn’t a ‘good’ morning. Sounded very shocked and subdued.

I remember it well. My second baby was due on this date. She arrived on the 11th

I was never a Beatle fan,but i was horrified by what happened to him.
40 years though ? can`t believe where the time has gone.

Lucretzia Tue 08-Dec-20 15:09:43

Oh gosh yes. I was living in Tenerife at the time . On a bus. Chap in front of me got out his newspaper. It was headline news!

I was so shocked I gasped. Chap kindly gave me his paper so I could read about it.

John was always my favourite.

Born and grew up in Liverpool

Fabulous place

A neighbour of ours did a Christmas Party for the staff at the department store where he was manager

He got The Beatles to perform for them

This was just before they hit the big time

There Was a play on r4 thus afternoon about the death of John Lennon. It had the crowds outsude st georges hall that you mentioned susan . Also a church service which wasnt advertised, so only a few people attended. Was that true?

I saw them in concert at Finsbury Park in London when i was about 15. I say saw because you couldn't hear them through the screaming.

I was a big fan of the Beatles and John Lennon and remember exactly what I was doing when I heard the news , I was getting ready to go to the hairdressers . He lived in Tittenhurst Park just along the road from me when I was a teenager .

I’ve just listened to the bbc radio 4 play set inn Liverpool when the news broke. It is very moving and uplifting, you can catch it on iPlayer.
It’s funny, I’m picturing the scenes but I definitely not 40 years ago. It’s funny how these things seem timeless. I can still see the look on the face of the person who had just heard and told us all. We were students and I was with my “boyfriend”, now my 60 year old husband t

Hellogirl1 Tue 08-Dec-20 23:47:35

We were in the car, on our way to work, all the kids were in the back, and it came on the news on the radio. Can`t believe it`s 40 years.

I was a massive Beatles fan and after listening to their songs for nearly 60 years (not all the time obviously) I can honestly say it's John's songs I still want to hear after all those years. They are the songs that have stood the test of time for me.
Incidentally, I bought an album called Everything Changes by Julian and it was wonderful. Beautiful songs and he sounds just like his father.

I remember it well, huge Beatles fan, but had probably moved on to other genres of music by 1980, nevertheless they were, and still are close to my heart, discovering them takes me right back to my childhood their music was probably my first musical awakening. I was massively shocked and appalled to hear John had been murdered.

Many years later on a visit to New York, on my lists of must visits, was The Dakota building and the Strawberry Fields memorial in Central Park. I have a picture of my two children standing next to that, when they were quite young I'd play the Beatles in the car quite often when I drove them around so they were quite familiar with their music and they did like singing along to many of their songs at the time.

Namsnanny Wed 09-Dec-20 13:25:21

l bought an album by julian called everything changes

I remember the day really well. I was expecting my daughter and was suffering from the very serious morning sickness the Duchess of Cambridge had. Having spent a few days in hospital I came home the day before. Got up the next morning, put the radio on and heard the news. I was in tears the whole day.

Davida1968 Thu 10-Dec-20 12:09:01

I remember waking up that day, hearing the news, and thinking "Oh dear God.....!" Followed by: "Well, that's the end of my youth...". (I was thirty...)
