Forget frugality!! What’s your luxury?

I’m loving Petunias thread on frugality.
I’d love to hear what you will not scrimp on!
Mine is butter, it has to be a famous French brand.
Also I just adore cashmere, I buy 1 quality cashmere jumper a year.

Fabric! and lots of it ..... i’m a quilter... and i just love fabric.... haven’t been out for coffees or lunches with friends since March.... so been spending that money on fabric!

In the days when I frequently travelled by train to London (200 miles) I always went first class. If I booked in advance and off peak it wasn’t too ruinous, and vastly better than second class.

Good food. I eat little meat, but when I do it has to be small amounts of top quality.

Those of you who miss the good old days when money was tight, must have had very happy marriages. Then you can cope with anything.

Special days out.

One of my absolute favourites is theatre combined with a really classy restaurant meal.

Arm and a leg though?

But honestly luxury is also a glorious walk on the Cornish cliffs near my home village. Doesn’t cost a penny but nothing more luxurious than that!

I think when this is all over I shall treat myself to some trips to some really good (classical) concerts, if necessary staying overnight in a hotel if its further away.

Then again I will probably get cross with people who cough.

Little luxury these days is cut flowers in the hall and lounge.

Missfoodlove how right you are - we may now be able to afford luxuries, but are we any happier than the days when luxuries were just a dream? Some of my happiest days were when we first got married and had nothing, but we had independence, our own home and no one to answer to. Despite a bottle of wine being a real luxury and having to save up for months to buy any household goods, we were quite happy with our lot.

Ok ...I fly business to Australia.

It's my aim!

DH keeps saying 'we could have a couple of holidays for that price when we get there's.

Simple. You fly business and he flies economy!! Emirates business class ...fab. Last time I went Cathay pacific, cheaper but less good.

My luxuries include the best food, very comfortable clothes and home, a luxury mattress, heated cover (with separate foot warmth control) and weighted blanket, and a variety of quality footwear (I do a lot of walking).

I enjoy the feeling that I'm doing some good in the world, so donations to charities compensate for useful work, now I'm retired.

I like to feel that I'm doing the least harm, too, so a vegan diet, ethical buying habits and responsible lifestyle are affordable 'luxuries' now too. You wouldn't catch me dead in cashmere:

Thank you all, it’s been an interesting read.

We are all very blessed.

It got me thinking how we can take so much for granted.
38 years ago aged 21 and a new Mum luxury was buying a bottle of cheap wine for the weekend.
I’m very fortunate to be in a much better financial position now but I’m not any happier than I was then.

Books, books and more books for my Kindle. Kindle may need replacing soon so is that a luxury or a necessity?

I've been offered a new one for Christmas.
Which one would posters recommend?

Callistemon Wed 16-Dec-20 22:18:40

I treated myself to some Shalimar years ago and the bottle was so lovely I kept it for years after the perfume was finished.

I've bought the Bendicks Bitter Mints ready for Christmas.

About 8 years ago I had a set of my teeth moulds made in which I squirt some dental peroxide every 6 months at home. Never regretted it.

Bluesky I have some shalimar perfume which I too like, but it reminds me of the smell of dolly mixtures.

Finally Bendicks Bittermints.

My luxury is good quality bedding - high thread count white sheets, pillow cases and duvet cover, pure down duvet and feather-and-down and pure down pillows. I fall asleep quickly and sleep really well all night, every night, so it was money well spent.

Callistemon Wed 16-Dec-20 21:40:46

It's the sleep I want Jane10 - in something that resembles a bed!

Jane10 Wed 16-Dec-20 21:20:27

I once flew back from Australia business class but it was a free upgrade after being delayed for several days by fog in New Zealand. Unfortunately my friend and I were so tired after days and nights without sleep (or a wash and change of clothes as God knew where our luggage was by that point!) that we slept most of the flight home and couldn't take advantage of the various treats on offer. I don't think the cabin crew were exactly thrilled with their two scruffy passengers.
