Hello-ho-ho Everyone tchsmile
I originally posted a thread with the same premis as this at the start of the week.

And despite of a few rather desperate bumps from me, it received zero replies tchsad

I'm asking for Christmassy recommendations for all, be they TV (Dickensian recently got a lot of love and rightly so); Film (is anything better than A Muppet Christmas Carol?; Food; Books; Anything at All!

I just thought it would be nice to collate lots of heartwarming, festive treats in one place, especially seeing as we need a bit of comfort and joy more than ever.

Thank you!flowers x

(If this falls on its' backside again I promise that I'll take the hint, pick up my mistletoe and clear off tchblush)

We have set up to record Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Singin' in the Rain. And there are several versions of A Christmas Carol on TV. (No Muppets for me). We watched Dickens: the man who invented Christmas and Simon Russell Beale's history of Christmas church music, which was lovely.

Carols from Kings is on radio 4 tomorrow afternoon.

There's a thread devoted to Mother love, it's getting very good reviews.
Bluecat I'm definitely with you regarding 'heartwarming' films (especially Nativity! tchenvy) For your blood pressure's sake - steer well clear of Love Actually!

LaGoulue I loved "Mother Love" first time round. I've been waiting for it to be shown again. Glad I read your post, I hadn't seen it advertised. Def one to record and keep.

Have watched numerous films lately with grandchild ..... best by far for every age group is Christmas Chronicles, closely followed by CC2 - added bonus is Kurt Russel is Santa/Father Christmas!
Btw tried to watch new Little Women last night, could watch about 30 minutes only, very disappointing. Loved the book and the first LW film but not this latest one.

I am a grumpy old woman who doesn't like most rom coms or Christmas films. I do like It's A Wonderful Life, as it has a bit more bite than the usual stuff, and you would have to have a heart of stone not to like A Muppet Christmas Carol but my favourite is The Shop Around The Corner. It's hardly ever on and I loathe the modern version, You've Got Mail.

If I never again see Elf, Nativity!, Arthur Christmas, The Santa Clause, Scrooged or any of those ghastly heart-warming made-for-TV Christmas movies, it will be too soon. Never seen Love Actually and hopefully never will.

I do like Carols From King's but I am usually too busy to watch. Also carol services tend to make me cry, as they remind me of our eldest DGS when he was a choir boy. Memories of him singing carols by candlelight, or when DH and I used to go to Midnight Mass and bring him home in the cold wintry night. Now he is a grown man and 4,000 miles away.

Damn. Started myself snivelling again. Bah. Humbug.

So lovely to know how popular Miss Read books are,I used to borrow them from the library and take them for my lovely mum to read when she was homebound and she loved them.I bought them all and still have one on the go constantly...when I wake up I the middle of the night I always read a coup!e of chapters..last night it was from Tales from Thrush Green..this week it will be No Holly for Miss Quinn.
It is my way of relaxing in a nostalgic happy time ..It has got me.through many troubling times over the years.
I also agree about Nigel Slaters Christmas Chronicles which was a present from a dear friend.

polly123 Sat 19-Dec-20 13:58:42

Scrooge (musical) with Albert Finney. Unbeatable!

songstress60 Sat 19-Dec-20 13:27:09

I like "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Christmas Carol" and "Wizard of Oz".

Phloembundle Sat 19-Dec-20 13:17:48

My favourite author is Laurie Lee, and his book about his childhood Christmases is absolutely wonderful, and will bring a warm glow to anyone reading it.

Kjo57 Sat 19-Dec-20 13:11:23

Watching ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, and ‘A Christmas Story’. Nothing like watching Ralphie in the Bunny “footy” pajamas that his Aunt sent. Listening to Christmas songs on the radio. Eating Christmas cookies that we’ve baked earlier.

LaGoulue Sat 19-Dec-20 13:06:08

Diana Rigg in “Mother Love” BBC4 over two nights, commencing Tuesday 22 December at 9pm. Absolute must-see. I don’t think it has been repeated since it first aired about 20 years ago. It is followed by a face to face interview with the late, great, Dame Diana.

I love all miss read books

Lazyriver Sat 19-Dec-20 12:17:26

Well I've been getting daily photos of the 'elf on the shelf' this year, and my word he's been up to mischief overnight. Found amongst the Barbies one morning, then surrounded by empty miniature gin bottles another.
I'm not a slushy Xmas film watcher usually, but Love actually left me in a blubbering mess this year. All the people hugging in the airport arrivals with Beach Boys 'God only knows' playing.

Alioop Sat 19-Dec-20 12:04:00

I've the DVD of "Its A Wonderful Life" which comes out the Sunday before Christmas every year, so I know what I'll be watching tomorrow afternoon. Also "Little Women" the very first one made, as I think of my mum when I watch it as it was our favourite to watch together when I was a child.

Mapleleaf Sat 19-Dec-20 11:35:07

Films I like to watch over Christmas are The Snowman, Polar Express, Wind in the Willows, Holiday Inn, Scrooge and Miracle on 34th Street along with a good Agatha Christie Christmas whodunit.
I enjoy reading anything Christmassy including Dickens, Miss Read, Christmas murder mystery classics and Rosamund Pilcher

Juicylucy Sat 19-Dec-20 11:29:58

The Holiday with Hugh grant Jack Black Kate Winslett. Lovely Christmas film set in beautiful English countryside.

Gwenisgreat1 Sat 19-Dec-20 11:20:56

DH hasn't told me what I'm watching!! But We are staying at home but will watch the GC via Zoom open their pressies. DD will deliver our Xmas Dinner, all plated up, and i will have a Zoom chat to my sisters, one whom was widowed late 2019

Quilty Sat 19-Dec-20 11:17:55

Calendar girl......I'm with you National Lampoons Christmas Vacation. Our DVD comes out every year. Our grandson has re introduced us to Home Alone.

MagicWand Sat 19-Dec-20 11:13:04

Our family favourite has to be The Flint Street Nativity. This was a 'made for TV' production about an infant class putting on their nativity play in front of their parents. The children (and their respective parents) are played by a brilliant range of adult comedians in a scaled up version of their classroom and you get all the wonderful backstage bickering ("I'm gonna be Mary") as well as the performance on stage. I've often thought it should be required viewing for trainee teachers!

'Doing our best to minimise the risk'
No you aren't.
The best thing to minimise the risk is not to mix households.
