Unexpected Christmas Day for 2 - what to do?

Just us two this year as well, probably only the third time in 43 years it'll just be us. Yes I'll dress up and have a quick doorstep visit with my 2 children and 6 grandchildren, then I'll look forward to having a little drink or two while preparing our turkey crown dinner. We'll probably have this around 1.30. We'll have nibbles and some lovely goodies in the evening and in between eating and drinking we'll do exactly as we please. no it won't be anywhere near our usual celebration, but we'll make the best of it and thank God that all our family are safe and well especially as 4 of us have had the dreaded covid viru.

This Christmas will just be the two of us, I am thankful and I look forward to it. We have gone into tier 4. I have cancelled our visit with my daughter.
I love Christmas, it is my favourite time of the year, I never get when people get resentful because of the poor sick and lonely, these people are with us for the other 364 days per year, and I hope I care about them all the time.
I refuse to feel guilty over my love of Christmas and family get togethers due to others circumstances, as I told someone in RL.

We will have "party food" for Christmas day! There's just the two of us, plus our two cats - and we live in a rural village. Years ago, when living in a similar village, the Electricity was cut - and Christmas Dinner was ruined (it took three days to be restored) Since then, we have cooked our Christmas Dinner on Christmas Eve, and just had party food on the big day, so the oven and hob are much less in use! I found this such a relief that we have made it our "usual thing". If the weather is decent, we'll go out in the afternoon for a breath of fresh air. Fizz smoked salmon n cream cheese blinis. Turkey with all trimmings then Tirimisu wine. Then Tv after opening presents. Just two of us as family in other parts of the world

Unfortunately the virus doesn’t give warning of what it’s up to and then gets aided and abetted by covidiots who only care about themselves. Very sad for anyone home alone although there is Silverline and us on here. All the anger and panic isn’t going to make any difference. Let’s just try and help each other through and ‘enjoy’ Christmas as best we can.

I wouldn't mind betting there's a fair bit of covert swapping of bags and boxes between car boots in motorway services today.

I explained why thanks to Johnson it’s a last minute switch- he could have said this 3 weeks ago instead of all the Christmas “rules relaxation” nonsense - anyone could tell the virus wasn’t going to relax over Christmas.I suppose we should have expected a U turn. What I’m cross about is the last minute changes - scientists were saying Christmas relaxation a bad idea ages ago. And he has the gall to call Starmer “Captain Hindsight”.

Why say ‘Thanks Johnson’ - it’s not his fault that there is another virus, or that it is spreading? This is to save lives, not inconvenience us.

So sad - have to admit to a few tears on Saturday as I was told by Boris I could not have my daughters here - they didn't come last year as it was not our turn! So loads of food and presents, decorations - now nothing. Very depressing and I am trying really hard to see the positives. As I heard today think of the lack of washing up.... dressing up, wine and full dinner.....maybe, not feeling it right now but know I WILL! Anyone need a chat on Christmas Day, get on here - you are not alone x

Commiserations to those who over bought on Christmas food, I rather thought the writing was on the wall before Saturday's announcement and bought a small turkey crown last week which is in the freezer and ham in the fridge, as it will probably be just the two of us. I also bought a joint of beef, also in the freezer before Saturday's announcement I thought it might be possible for our children and grandchildren to visit for lunch over the Christmas period, but alas that's not to be, we're all Tier 4 now, disappointing but not unexpected. Just have to make the best of it and hope things will improve sometime in 2021, when maybe we will be having summer parties in the garden in lieu of the lack of Christmas get togethers for 2020

My husband I will be on our own for the first time since 1977! We have tried to think of all the positives: Bucks Fizz first thing, stay in our PJs all day, wear Christmas Jumpers on top of PJs when we have Skype calls, enjoy Christmas lunch with several large flutes of champagne, watch the TV programmes we want to watch, however we will have to get dressed when we walk the dog !!! It’s not so bad really - it could be so much worse.

I don't know if it will be the 2 of us or just me for Christmas. My husband is hoping to he discharged from hospital on Christmas Eve, but unfortunately I don't think he will be well enough. He has been in for just over 2 weeks and is still having oxygen (fluid around his heart leading to lung infection). However, if it's the 2 of us it will be roast ribs of beef(neither of us like turkey much) and watch a film or two. If it is just me I'll freeze the beef, and probably have a lamb shank or something. Other than that whether we are together or not, I will take our dogs out for walks, wave to people from a distance, and then video call our children and grandchildren. It will still be a special day.

Wine and Netflix sounds good to me !!

Another variant here. Normally there would be 10 - 12 of us but cannot see any of ourAC orDGC this year. So lovely to have them all together.
This year we will just have DHs mother with us. Not the merriest of ladies and rather formal. So, no just the two of us,in pj’s and relaxing with a tray on our laps.

There'll be 6 of us including 6yr old DGD whereas normally there'd be 12-14, with me and my SiL taking turns , should have been my turn this year.
We'll have a proper Christmas dinner as usual, albeit that we've only had to buy a rather small turkey crown this year and the usual champagne etc, followed by a few silly games then present opening. Basically, the usual format but smaller.
We will also try to fit in Zoom calls with other family members including SiL who lives in Sydney Australia.
Several of us still work and will need to go to work after the weekend, so will still try to make the day special.

Why are you blaming Boris for this. He is the person trying to keep us safe.

We’re on our own too for the first time in 54 years .! We’re going to open our presents in bed before a leisurely breakfast. our elder daughter has bought us M&S lamb shanks with all the veg and trimmings , younger daughter has bought us a surprise dessert and Bucks Fizz .and two of the gc have made us shortbread and chocolate coated nuts , hope the teeth last !! We’ll probably go out for a walk between breakfast and lunch , just for fresh air if the weather is kind .. I’m a volunteer with RVS so although I’ve not been able to help at our local hospital since March I’ll be calling a few elderly people who are on their own to wish them a happy Christmas..
We’ve been shielding since I got the NHS letters in March , so we have spent most of the year in our new summerhouse and garden, bit chilly for it now but we can take our afternoon coffee down there and put the heater on just for half an hour ! We’ll have our lunch and watch the Queens speech and no doubt fall asleep afterwards! Evening will be FaceTime our family in England and Ireland and late night zoom with relatives in Sydney , 9 hour time difference so not always easy to get it right but we always seem to manage it. Boxing Day we’ll slouch about and watch tv , no doubt another morning walk and if anyone is out we’ll give them a socially distanced greeting .That’s Christmas done for another year and hopefully we’ll get through this and all stay safe and healthy.. Happy Christmas to you all ???

I have a completely different 'problem'. We have dd, sil and 3 young children living with us. They had planned a holiday cottage and were sooo looking forward to it. We were equally looking forward to a little peace and quiet with candlit dinners and music that we like.
All has been cancelled as we are in tier 4 so it will be another Christmas of noisy early mornings and chaotic meals for us. Ho hum.

That's the problem with this country people need to be told what to do do what ever you want and think yourself lucky

I'm making the effort despite there only being the two of us, I'll wear a dress for a change, open the champagne early. the table setting will be unusual, black and silver this year and I'll have polished the silver. . I'll cook a chateaubriand with all the trimmings . DH has chosen the wine. A raspberry pavlova followed by cheese and port. We are stuck in tier 4 and I'm going to enjoy our day . I also plan to take glasses of champagne to various neighbours who I know will now be on their own . Have offered a cooked dinner to a lady who's just out of hospital.
