Greeneyedgirl,thank you.
HMRC slightly angry is an understatement
Sewing on Girl Guide badges, aaargh!!
Welsh Senedd Election - PR in action. This will be interesting!
I hope this won't be taken as a thread about a thread, although it stems from a matter that arose on another thread (look on the health threads if you want to find the post in question).
I know in advance that we will all have different views on this, but hope that we can respect each other's thoughts without any need for a bunfight
Concerns were raised over the wisdom of posting about an 'intimate' health concern, on the grounds that perverts might get off on it.
Personally, as we are anonymous, that thought, unpleasant as it is, doesn't really concern me. I wouldn't know, therefore I see it as unimportant.
Then I started wondering how far people's concerns stretch. For instance, there are no doubt perverts with a fetish for rubber gloves.
A lot of people have described their (anti-covid) glove-wearing practices in great detail. Are any concerned that perverts might be getting off on those descriptions?
As I said, just thought it might be interesting to generally compare our different views on this.
Greeneyedgirl,thank you.
I do not see a real problem. There are people who have a fetish about feet, but they are unlikely to be interested in a thread about bunions, or one generally about medical foot problems. The ones they will be interested in are ones that describe feet in a way to make them attractive.
I think the same will apply to threads, on piles, prolapse or anything else that is essentially practical and everyday in approach.
Couldn’t give a tinkers cuss ( is that not woke enough to say??? ) about any ‘perverts’ reading a post of mine - sad b@#*tards , who don’t even register on my radar.
I agree SuzannahM very tame stuff on here for your average pervert. I have turned up some strange things as well when making completely innocent searches.
millie22and that can only become a problem when it is raised afresh after threads are deleted!
A thread can only upset people if they choose to participate.
Only if you are worried they may be bored to death!
There are too many other sites where they can find what they are looking for with ease and in far more graphic detail. Some of my very innocent web searches have taken me to some very strange sites. Places I would be very happy never to visit again.
It's not really 'perverts' that can be troublesome on here it's a person who comes back time after time and starts a thread seemingly to upset others. There have been a few of those recently and whilst it is probably best to ignore them it can be hard to do so.
Mumsnet
Not very good with what intials mean,
please tell me what MN means?

Well MamaCaz, after I read your OP I glanced back at your user name to see if I recognised it?
As I did, I give you the benefit of any doubt I may have had that you were a troll wanting to discuss surgical gloves and their various uses!
???
A while back I applied for a job, and after exchanging a few emails, my potential new boss phoned me.
He kept steering the conversation around to musing about my hair being tied back (in a bun!) , and how the back of my neck would look!
So, think on, all those who like scarves. "They may be watching".
The trouble is some hoax post can, on the face of it, seem completely normal, interesting and believable, and one or two have kept it up for a few months until the final reason for the hoax appears.
Even that can at first reading be believable even if the news is apparently a very sad happening.
Usually signs are there that things are not all they seem if we think hard about what we are expected to believe and the circumstances around the way in which the ‘punchline’ was delivered.

I have people in RL that I can discuss intimate problems with so I don’t need to mention them on here. However many folk don’t so some, maybe, the majority, of these threads could be genuine. It can be hard to judge.

I wouldn’t post anything confidential or intimate on GN, even if I had a pseudonym.
I don’t think the problem is perverts ‘getting off’ on threads which discuss such things, but that if a genuine poster does share intimate details, they are then opening up the possibility of receiving private messages from the sort of people they probably wouldn’t want a private message from.
Doodledog & Fanny - I don’t think you don’t need a different email address to change your username. You can just de-register & then re-register with a different one. Some quite prolific posters have had 5 or 6 different user names.
It’s possible that if you have two or more email addresses you could have more than one username at the same time.
But I think that’s against the rules & GN would know because it would be the same IP address. I think ?
No, you don't need to use a separate email address if you only want one account, but it is not uncommon on discussion boards for people to have more than one, and respond in different 'personae', and to do that, you would probably need to use different email addresses.
They usually get caught out by forgetting whether they are logged in as X or Y, and posting under the wrong username
.

Doodledog You say "GN doesn't have a 'search user's posts' function as far as I can tell" but if you put the user's name into the search box, it brings up posts by that user and mentions of them by other posters. That gives you an idea of any obsessions that a poster may be displaying. You can sort the results by date if you want, which makes it easier to find things if you know roughly when it was posted.
Thanks - I didn't know that
That's true,EllanVannin - whoever "they" are! ?
I am sure there are far more graphic sites that perverts would be attracted to rather than trawling through gransnet in the hope of reading a post about something intimate.
However I could see why they would look on here for pics of grandchildren.
I can understand why you’d think some posters have a hidden agenda - but why on earth would you think it’s kids?! Pretty sure if teenagers with unusual interests want to get their rocks off, they know far better corners of the internet to do it.
It's not our worry, MamaCaz, it's they who have the problem.

Some forums have had problems with trolls posting pretending, for example, to be a teenager and asking that sort of intimate question to try and get real teenagers to reply. Sometimes they will then send private messages. It’s all pretty silly and immature, but not nice for those duped.
I wouldn’t have thought Gransnet would appeal to that kind of troll though. Also we are all older and wiser, more likely to spot any fakers and less likely to be upset by them.
*Other trolls are available.
I miss the school uniform/ Plimsolls threads they may have been hoaxes but they were good for a laugh. I can't decide has the English GCSE curriculum changed or are young people so fed up with the virus they can't even be bothered to fool their granny?
Galaxy
I think the majority of posts on those issues, bowel, intimate areas etc are made by trolls, it's a particular issue on MN.
I agree, and there have been some doozies by those pretending bowel problems.....aided and abetted by innocent posters taking such interest! Mind you, it’s amusing at times.
Remember the happy camper?
I was about to say actually those two words mean different things. But realised all these details may be delighting all the reading perverts
