Manufacturers guarantees for articles purchased on Amazon

My Morphy Richards compact Soup Maker decided to play up today and actually blew the power points in my flat. Giving me a fright and few moments of anxiety. Fortunately, it was just a matter of tripping back the switch in the box.

As this article is less than a year old, I contacted MR to ask for a replacement,. Used their 'Chat' line to do this. It is slow but does work. Had all the information to hand, serial no, model no, date purchased via Amazon, their order no. etc etc.

First MR told me that as it was not under extended guarantee I had no claim. I then pointed out that I was claiming under one-year manufacturers guarantee. Then told that as I purchased it via Amazon, they have 'bought out' their Manufacturers guarantee and I have to go to them.

So, started again, with Amazon chat line. Took a while to get over to them that I knew that the return window was well passed, but I was claiming under one-year guarantee. Did get there finally, and am now having replacement sent to me later this week and this faulty one will be collected.

Has anyone else, with other manufacturers had this business of Amazon taking over their one-year guarantee. We are not told that when we purchase items.

Took me over 1.5 hours to sort this out. I do have the time, but can imagine other people feeling unable to spend so much time on getting their faulty items replaced.

I emailed them about a kettle that blew after six months of use. I got a next day reply and the money was back in my account the day after that.

They didn’t do a replacement. It was up to me to order another which I was happy to do, because I went for a different one instead.

I was impressed.

I seem to have a vague memory that the onus on supplying a new item moved from the manufacturer to the retailer some years ago, but it could be a false memory.
