What are you glad you don’t have to do anymore?

I’ve just been watching my next door neighbours playing with their little daughter on a sledge. One pulling her back to the top of the slope and the other catching her at the bottom. It brought a smile to my face watching them from the comfort of my house but I’m glad I’m not obliged to play in the snow anymore. (Even if my 21 year old head tells me I would have fun, my ageing body certainly wouldn’t thank me!) it got me thinking. What else am I glad I can’t/don’t have to do anymore??

Targets that were impossible to achieve if you followed ‘ management’ instructions, and if you didn’t, threatened with no salary increment that year.
Ah yes, polly123 those staff who got promotion even though they were useless at their job, and then proceeded to cause chaos

Having to cope with the precarious nature of being in a controlling relationship.

Go to work.
Travel on crowded buses and underground trains.
Work to timetables and impossible deadlines.
Socialise with work colleagues and bosses whom I had little in common with.
Ironing at least 30 shirts every Sunday.

Commuting on busy trains! I feel so sorry for people jammed like sardines on the train, tube and buses. I know most people have been asked to work from home but according to my son (who is a police officer and can't work from home), the tubes are almost as busy as they used to be.

Getting up for work. I gave up work a couple of years ago to look after my DH. Don't miss early mornings sorting newspapers out of coming home from work in the dark

I’m so glad I don’t have to get up early!
Also I’m thrilled not to have periods -and the monthly migraines that went with them!

Jennyluck Sun 10-Jan-21 15:06:07

I’m shielding at the moment. I do miss being at work, but so glad I’m not having to get up at 5.30 in the dark. Not having to scrap the car windows, or worry about driving in the snow.

To Petra, Yes, taking orders from dumbclucks with big busts and blonde hair, no qualifications to speak of but were adept at sucking up to the weedy little Principal of the college I worked in.

Me too Cid24 no horrible heavy periods and wearing of giant pads. I didn't realise how much my life revolved round that until I had an hysterectomy.

Having to referee two kids that always used to fight after school!

Aepgirl Sun 10-Jan-21 15:40:49

Have the house pristine ‘in case somebody turns up’.

Getting up for work before dawn on an icy Winter's morning or trudging back home after dark in the snow.

Anything to do with menstruation. Thank the Lord that finished years ago!

Notsooldat75 Sun 10-Jan-21 15:55:27

Having to explain or justify everything I do! I live alone, and the joy of being able to make a cup of tea, eat a slice of cake or an apple without either having to share it or get some for someone else!

Woodmouse Sun 10-Jan-21 16:03:14

Get up to the sound of an alarm. I was fortunate enough to be able to give up work in my early fifties.

Annaram1 Sun 10-Jan-21 16:22:16

Having to change nappies and then wash them! As my children are in their fifties disposable ones weren't an option.

Tweedle24 Sun 10-Jan-21 16:24:45

Retired nurse here. Like the others I don’t miss the early mornings, ice or not. Had to be on duty by 7am on early shifts. I preferred that to the late shifts, having to walk through deserted hospital car park in the dark.

I am.glad with lockdown I don't have to do.anything quickly, there are no deadlines. First time in my life since I was probably about 4. In fact I spend as much time as I can doing everything, spinning it all out. A novel feeling which I am enjoying.

But I do miss the games of jargon bingo we used to play on the back row, in between doing a crossword or three.

Jargon bingo grin Oh yes it keeps us from the unintentional falling asleep jerk of the head!

EkwaNimitee Sun 10-Jan-21 17:03:08

Going to work, especially when it was morning shift. Always working to someone else's timetable then.

Nanny27 Sun 10-Jan-21 17:52:34

Smear tests. Oh how delighted I was to receive a notice of result after my last one with an attached note that I wouldn't need to attend anymore. Yaaaaaay!

Calendargirl Sun 10-Jan-21 18:05:57

It’s sad that so many of us have written ‘go to work’ or similar.

I used to love my job, years ago, (bank clerk) but it changed when it became all about sales, targets, new processes that seemed to change every week, endless pointless courses to attend, continuous ‘training’ that had to be slotted in between dealing with customers..... and so on.

Ohmother Sun 10-Jan-21 18:10:11

petunia

Back to the buying chocolate instead of sanitary products, it must be 15 years since I last bought any. Would I be a bad person if I backdated those purchases. What would 15 years worth of chocolate look like?

Are you worth it?.....of course you are! ?

Barmeyoldbat Sun 10-Jan-21 18:31:41

Does anyone else remember those belts you wore to keep your sanitary pads in place. The pads had loops and the belt had hooks.
Anyway back to the subject I just love being able to what I want in my own time, lie in bed late instead of getting up at 6.00 am, being polite and nice to some of the idiot I worked with. Not having to wear smart clothes all day.

Elvis58 Sun 10-Jan-21 18:34:01

Getting up inthe dark coming home from work in the dark.
Racing to get 3 children ready for school.
Retirement bliss! I sometimes put my alarm on early ,just to wake up smile and turnover.

Artaylar Sun 10-Jan-21 18:41:21

Public speaking - this was around 10% of my work for over 20 years and I absolutely detested it

Having to sit in on pointless meetings when there were a million and one other things to deal with

Managing whinging and backbiting staff

The dreaded team building away days

Apart from all of the above I really enjoyed my work, particularly working with the public, who for the most part were really great. Also miss the great banter that I enjoyed with colleagues - mainly building contractors
