D I Y Perm recommendation

I’m with the ‘don’t brigade’. My hair is very porous, so whilst I use a coloured shampoo sometimes, I never leave it on for the full time. I had a disastrous perm in 1976 and went to a different salon after that and was told to never, never, ever have another perm - anywhere. Still haven’t.

Many thanks for all your comments. Years ago, early teens. I did my own with Pin Up. It was rather a palaver but turned out quite well. I will try the 'Clairol semi permanent' as that sounds a good alternative.

cuppafull I used Olia Silver. I tried that one because it said that there were no harmful additives and, as my hair is very porous and prone to breakages, I thought it would be kinder. It was kinder. And purple.

I would say that it’s a very bold move, but please send the photos to encourage the rest of us that anything is doable, if that’s a word .
But don’t perm it then colour it

I'd love blue or purple hair.

My Dad permed my hair for me once, one of those Twink home perms. Mum was too nervous to do it so Dad said he'd have a go and he made a very good job of it.

Are there still home perms out there? They can’t be hard to do as my Mother and her friends all used to have the home ones ( cheaper) mind you that was around 1960.

I cut the sides but not the back but decided a mullet was not me.
Somehow I managed to wield the scissors and chop the back. Now it's just a mess all round.

I could see my hairdresser behind me in the mirror, slowly shaking his head.

Leave well alone Lemon! During lockdown #1 and unable to get to the hairdresser to have my usual cut and colour, I decided to dye my hair myself. As I was now almost completely white haired, I decided to go for a beautiful soft silver grey. OMG! After just 20 minutes, my hair was a deep purple/blue which, to this day, hasn't completely grown out. My GS now actually refers to me as Granny Blue Hair!

Stunning tho and not easily forgotten. May I ask was that the Semi Permanent Silver?

Nice and Easy Semi Permanent here too. Very simple, not smelly, doesn't make your eyes water as no ammonia in it...and washes out from my white hair after 6-8 weeks. I do the job in the kitchen (hard floor) & rinse under one of those tall kitchen taps. Leave the conditioner in slightly longer, wrap in a plastic bag 10mins then rinse, and a lovely soft result after 25 mins total time.
And you can order it all with your online food shop
Wouldn't try perming tho as the fluid is much too hazardous.

I wonder why it’s a fave home hair colour? I always leave colour to the hairdresser, but only have highlights put in once a year anyway.

The last time I had a perm I was expecting DC1. I didn't realise it could make my hair react differently, or else she was just a bad hairdresser but I had to have it all cut off very short afterwards.

I use Clairol semi permanent, very easy to use and washes out after approximately 20 washes.

Ginster I used a nice and easy colour on my hair I didn't think I could sit in a mask for 2 hours or more.I then decided to do my own highlights...that might have been a mistake they're not so much highlights as wide streaks of blonde.I have thought about doing the whole head colour again to cover it but not sure if my hair would be grateful as its a bit dry looking.I'll wait until this lockdown is past and see my hairdresser ....before she goes on maternity leavehopefully .

Gingster why not try a wash out colour if you don’t like no harm done.As for perming forget it you could really damage your hair.

What about colouring your own hair. My hair is now white. I do t really like it so I might try colouring myself. Any recommendations?
