Do you know English geography?

I shall go to sleep tonight trying to name them all, now minimoon.

I used to know all the county towns of England, but I'm not sure I could name them all now.
I had to laugh at that map though.

DGD2 was told by her teacher that her Mummy said bath rather than barth because she came from up North- Leicestershire!

Don't tell me it's pronounced Barth? How can it be, theres no R.

I can remember those jig saw puzzles made up of all the counties in England, showing the county towns too. Good for learning elementary geography. I've never forgotten it, even though some counties are now subsumed into others - Rutland and Huntingdonshire spring to mind.

Little Rutland is independent again now. Multum in Parvo.

Surely the actual names of the places are in the correct locations, and thus the blobs at the left hand end are all too far west, of course.

My knowledge of geography is pretty poor TBH, but even I know Bristol and Birmingham aren't in Wales.

My offspring are intelligent, but they know very little British geography. It shows how the curriculum has changed over time. I learnt counties and towns at school.

I was appalled to read ‘no such word’ beside the word Mancunian, which was in an essay written by one of my children - the teacher came from London!

Surely this is some sort of hoax!!! Or as someone has said, an overlay gone wrong. Of course, with Manchester where this shows it, there was never any need for the Manchester ship canal to be built!!!

Even corrected the map is weird. Why is Surrey a dot?

When we moved to Bristol from Yorkshire almost forty years ago DS was appalled that his (highly selected) classmates regarded Birmingham as being in the north. Leeds and Newcastle were definitely beyond the pale and quite unimaginable. Not sure how different things are today.

Manchester is in the sea, Newcastle has moved to Cumbria, Birmingham and Bristol are in Wales.

I dread to think what this means for the roll out...

I hope Mancunians have got their wetsuits and snorkels.

It looks as if two layers have been put together out of alignment; everywhere on the map is north-west of where it should be.

The most worrying error I ever came across was the last time I flew. I was following our progress on the electronic map, and noticed that Stansted Airport had been placed in north Kent. Fortunately we were heading for Heathrow, which the Lufthansa pilot found successfully.

And I had a work colleague who thought Norfolk was in North Wales, and vice versa.

Wales is in England - or so I am told often.
Although I don't think Bristolians would be too happy about being sent across to Wales.

I think the cities stayed put but the country slipped sideways.

We have enough problems in Wales without Birmingham and Bristol entering. I thought my Geography was bad.

there was a funny thread on MN a month ago, about things people didn't know.
like not knowing that yellow dandelions were the same plant as dandelion clocks.
and so many thought Pontefract was in Wales.
some were really funny, wish i could remember. it began with a professional woman, capable mother, wondering how rice was manufactured, and why they only made it in those little bits.
it was welcome light relief. will try to find it.
