In Birmingham we had The Beehive and Marshall and Snelgrove.

In the last war my Mum was an Air Raid Personnel warden in Birmingham. Marshall and Snelgrove had their shop windows blown out by a bomb. My Mum had to walk up and down to prevent thieves stealing stuff. As a schoolgirl I was nervous to go in there as the shop was so posh and the assistants so heavily made up and snooty. There used to be a lady in the window repairing nylon stockings.....

Yes it was Etams! smile My Mum would shop at the front and I would head to the back...any men would hang about outside grin it was brilliant

We used to call Etam - everything to attract men. C&A we called Coats and ‘Ats. I was A Saturday girl at C&A. I used to earn 50p for the day, but you could buy a lovely pair of pearlised high heels in Manfield shoe shop for £2.19.6d ( approx £2.95).

C & A and BHS.

I do wonder if there will be any shops left in High streets by the end of this year.

Not a High St. shop but how I miss Tommy Ball's shoes and clothes in Blackburn. Floors of Clarks seconds shoes, from baby's to adult's at rock bottom prices. Being able to buy my four children new school and best shoes there saved me a fortune and I always had the latest shoes for next to nothing.
And well known outdoor branded clothes at ridiculous prices,
£4 for full length down filled coat! Still wearing 30 years later!

I miss Tommy Ball's as well. I live about 5 minutes away from where the bottom shop was and used to find lots of b bargains there . Thanks for reminding me as I had forgotten about it.

Poundland and wilco are nowhere near replacements for woolies of BHS! Bring them back. There is less and less competition in the department stores now, not good. Currently miss all shops, online is convenient but doesn't make up for a browse and a coffee.

Harris27 Wed 13-Jan-21 20:24:18

Remember little woods? I used to get my wool there the kids clothes and have a coffee there too.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-Jan-21 19:38:47

Actually if you think about it the choice has dwindled so much

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-Jan-21 19:37:20

I miss Jaeger.

NotAGran55 Wed 13-Jan-21 19:32:32

I loved East before it’s recent online reincarnation . There is literally nothing I would buy now and I was previously spoilt for choice .
The Pier and Habitat for a mooch for gifts and household bits I didn’t know that I needed until I went in!

Loved C&A and Etam, Woollies, Bon Marche and Planet. We have a diabolically poor range here in Rochdale and one of our two shopping precincts has just closed permanently. Only place now to buy books is WHS. Throughout the 70s, bought most of my clothes (including my bridesmaid's dress and my going away outfit) from Laura Ashley - made me feel so floaty and feminine.

Rendella Wed 13-Jan-21 19:26:43

I miss Past Times and Laura Ashley

I was a Woollies Saturday girl, think I was 16-17. We used to serve cake and cheese and sliced cold meats on the deli counter and when a pensioner asked for say, 4 ounces, I'd cut them off a big lump and hand it over, pretending to weigh it! My friend got stuck on fruit and veg. for months and hated it as her hands got so dirty.

Lexisgranny Wed 13-Jan-21 18:18:54

Sorry I should have said Oxford Street not Regent Street for B&H and M&S.

notgoneyet Wed 13-Jan-21 17:57:23

I also bought my wedding dress in C&A. 1966, and I paid just a few shillings more than £12!

posset Wed 13-Jan-21 17:40:57

East for me, I still look on Ebay an sometimes their stuff pops up.

Calender37 Wed 13-Jan-21 17:39:48

Saxones, Lilley &Skinner, Bourne &Hollingsworth, C&A, Dolcis, Perrings Furniture, BHS, and all the Department Stores in Kensington that I remember from my childhood. And dear old Woollies - you could find an amazing range of items them. Time passes but thanks for all the memories.

Kate1949 Wed 13-Jan-21 17:30:22

Artaylar Wed 13-Jan-21 17:28:57
