I’m meaning before covid! I think mine will always be woolies, Bhs, C&A

Nannan2 Wed 13-Jan-21 11:37:50

Yes TrendyNannie6, all same as you!? Was a very sad day & the start of a slippery slope for shops when C& A went.then Woolthworths☹

Forestflame Wed 13-Jan-21 11:37:20

Janejudge I think Tammy girl was either Top shop or ETAM. Miss woolie and C & A. Other shops just not the same

Ro60 Wed 13-Jan-21 11:36:50

My nearest M & S closed down almost two years ago and I miss it very much for both food and clothes.
The building is still empty and looks folorn.

Ro60 Wed 13-Jan-21 11:35:13

Cambridge - Was it Etam?
I too miss C&A.
Karen Millen - the clothes just got my size & style. Principles further back.
In the 60's our local Co-op where you went in with your list and you would be served over the wooden counter.

Another vote for BHS. I used to buy loads of undies and tops from there.

I'm reading this in N.ireland and don't no half of the shops you are all mentioning lol. I lived through the troubles and a lot of the shops wouldn't of come here and I don't blame them at all, so now I feel like I've missed out in having some of your wonderful shops. We did have C&A, Woolies and Tammy Girl in Etams. I was so tiny I shopped in T.G til I was well in my 20s cos their clothes went by height not size. Still having to turn all my trousers up now!

BHS, Debenhams, Bon Marche and Edinburgh Woolen Mill have all disappeared from my local high street.

Hardly worth going into town these days.

JaneJudge Wed 13-Jan-21 11:31:24

KateKate1949, that's it Etams!

GagaJo Wed 13-Jan-21 11:28:27

I miss Habitat. A bit expensive for what it was, but some lovely designs.

Kate1949 Wed 13-Jan-21 11:27:15

I loved Dolcis for shoes too.

Nicegranny Wed 13-Jan-21 11:25:41

I think some of us miss “the good old days” l know l do.

Kate1949 Wed 13-Jan-21 11:24:12

Chelsea Girl, Etams. In the '70s there was a great shop here in Birmingham called Henry's. They sold lovely trendy clothes very cheaply. I was in there every week on pay day.

bongobil Wed 13-Jan-21 11:22:42

Woolies, BHS, C & A and Jane Norman (remember them ladies, I loved their clothes back in the day lol)

JaneJudge Wed 13-Jan-21 11:22:26

There is obviously a theme here but I miss the old knickerbox shops too. They sold really pretty underwear which apparently is now quite a raunchy brand and sold in Ann Summers grin shock

JaneJudge Wed 13-Jan-21 11:21:10

Does anyone know what the shop was called that had a ladies section at the front and Tammy girl and a lingerie section at the back? I remember being completely obsessed with buying teen clothes and underwear from there!

I miss old fashioned department stores too

barbiann57 Wed 13-Jan-21 11:15:39

I miss MS mainly for underwear and their Food Hall, ours shut down some years ago.

Wizardofoz Wed 13-Jan-21 11:14:52

There was a Bustop in Edinburgh also French Connection before it became expensive. This was late 70s

kjmpde Wed 13-Jan-21 11:06:30

i miss charity shops - always loved a mooch.

East opened online again at some stage but don't know if it is still going. The clothes just weren't the same, more like the over fussy stuff from Monsoon than the nice, simple, well made clothes from East.

(sorry, terrible typos)

WoodLane7 Wed 13-Jan-21 11:04:34

I went to Leipzig a couple of years ago and was thrilled to find C&A on their high street; and yes, I did go in and buy something from the Clock House....

cc Wed 13-Jan-21 11:04:15

I'd forgotten about Dickens and Jones in Regent Street. It was a lovely shop, much better than most of the House of Fraser stores but one of the first they closed. I bought my wedding drress their in the evening dress department - £50!
Also Bus Stop which was my go-to shop in the 60's, and BHS bras and cafe.

EllanVannin Wed 13-Jan-21 11:01:30

Above all, I miss our local post office. I've really felt like a fish out of water without it. I like having cash all the time and their ATM supplied that, plus cards, stamps and postage.
I'm completely stuck when there are cards to send to Oz as they have to be weighed before being sent.

Access to other post offices is by bus, which I won't use. I just feel completely isolated. The local butcher and veg shops only take cash. Plastic isn't always for me. £1,000 which I had hidden last year has all but gone but having that round the place was giving me nightmares. It's been particularly awful for me really having been used to full independence.

East, Cranks, the Pier, BHS.
