What are the 3 best places you have ever been outside your own country?

South Africa
Croatia
Turkey

I spent three months in. Bordeaux as a student though which I didn’t much enjoy....my landlady didn’t like Brits because we burnt Joan of Arc!!

Only three? Paris, Bordeaux, and Taormina. Next on my list Athens, Santorini and Vienna. I love Europe!

So do I !

Kate1949 I agree about the airport. Maybe you'll manage to go back there one day and see all the bits you missed.

nanna8 Sat 16-Jan-21 12:13:47

Europe is so far for us, the thought of travelling all that way with a mask on is offputting. Everywhere except lovely New Zealand and Fiji etc is far really so we tend to go to Asia and the Pacific. Vanuatu is nice. Of course there’s Bali, parts of that are wonderful if you avoid Kuta.

Sparklefizz I won't tell my DH about that. He'll be annoyed! I think we were just so thrilled to be there we didn't investigate enough. I never thought I'd get there. They need a bigger airport though.

Sparklefizz No we didn't unfortunately. We didn't know about that but would have loved it, having visited Pompeii and Herculaneum in the past.

We were there for 2 weeks so bought a guide book. Apparently the subsequent tsunami after the volcanic eruption was reckoned to have washed everyone out to sea, so no preserved bodies, but the pumice and ash had preserved much of the whole settlement. Before the eruption the people traded with the Minoans on Crete, who were also destroyed by the same tsunami.
(end of history lesson grin )

We had a volcanic tremor while we were there!

Provence - for light and colour
Vienna - for elegance
New Zealand - for scenery

nanna8 Sat 16-Jan-21 11:36:10

Haven’t heard of Vulcano - is it Italy ?

Missfoodlove Sat 16-Jan-21 10:48:22

Corsica early season - Hills covered in fragrant shrubs. Blankets of cyclamen growing in pine woods. Stunning beaches, some with pink sand.... Herds of goats roaming free and wild tortoises bumbling along paths. We've been twice and still have lots to explore.

Rio de Janerio - Brazil, for Carnival, a beautiful, vibrant city.

Havana - Cuba, for Salsa lessons in a lively group with professional dancers.

Spain - the Camino de Santiago, walking 500 miles from France, staying in hostels, meeting wonderful people. This is the one I want to do again.

Oslo (specifically the cross-country skiing tracks around the city, though the city is nice too), Ithaca (and its gorges) NY, Zions National Park Utah.

Sparklefizz Sat 16-Jan-21 10:21:04

Kate1949 Did you visit Akrotiri, the archaeological dig which rivals Pompeii? That was fascinating. Many artefacts uncovered from the volcanic eruption but not a single body.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 16-Jan-21 10:19:09

nanna8 narrowing down to three is really difficult.

Grand Canyon (we traveled by helicopter absolutely stunning scenery)

Another fan of Great Ocean Road Australia (many years ago with two young children and a very understanding school)

Maldives, I didn’t think I would like the feeling of isolation but the beach and ocean wildlife were beyond my wildest dreams. We had our youngest two children with us and they said the holiday was as good as Disneyland if not better.

Oh yes Sparklefizz I forgot about
Santorini. How could I? It's unbelievable isn't it?

Fabulous! We stayed in one of the "cave apartments" and sat on the terrace each morning, having breakfast and watching the cruise ships come in.
