All those piles of brand new exercise books in different colours! Its what teaching was all about ?
Sorry to hear your news Urms and I completely agree about living life so that there are no regrets.
Hoping to sleep long and late after two early starts. The forecast suggests we may get outside ?.

Sorry to hear about the sad loss of your friend urmston
Well remembered about the Silvine notebooks, I don’t remember the tables on the back but I do remember the thrill of opening the front cover of a brand new book and getting my best pencils out ..

Susan56 referred to the young poet laureate who spoke so powerfully in the inauguration ceremony. Here is a link to a transcript

Goodness,typos galore. Two gins down.

Grandmabatty Wed 20-Jan-21 21:29:59

Mawbe that sounds lovely. I was a librarian and then an English teacher so words and books are deep in my heart. Urmstongran I'm do sorry for your loss. He sounds like he had a life well lived. Brooke Two find down and a nap! One more babysitting day to go. Grannygravy I used to love new jotters. One of the enjoyable things about teaching was giving out new jotters and texts. Before technology came along,I took great delight in filling in names in my register book. I watched the inauguration and have portered. Off to bed soon for an early rise. Fingers crossed for no snow. I hope Storm Christophe hasn't bothered you. I'm particularly thinking of Kittylester

Urmstongran Wed 20-Jan-21 21:08:43

Thank you GG13

Urmstongran Wed 20-Jan-21 21:08:18

Grey cells just worked overtime!
‘Silvine’ notebooks.

Here is a photo of what the back looked like! Anyone else recall them? It would be 1962 or thereabouts for my pocket money splurge.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 20-Jan-21 20:57:35

Urms condolences ?

Urmstongran Wed 20-Jan-21 20:50:21

‘Evening All’
?

We just had some very sad news from a Bradford friend. Her husband died aged 82y this afternoon. He had terminal cancer. Such a lovely man. A true gentleman. They were our neighbours in Malaga ever since we bought next door to them 16y ago. We shall miss him very much and the apartment has been up for sale since the end of November as they knew they wouldn’t be returning. The end of an era indeed.

It’s good to make the best of times with people we care for while we can isn’t it? That way there is sadness to endure but no regrets.

Oh Pittcity you won’t be sorry! When we first moved here in the summer time 10 years ago I felt we were on a permanent holiday here with the buzz of the place and all the bars and restaurants so near to hand!

soop wouldn’t a book shop like that be superb? I love the sound set up at the one you mentioned Maw! Books + cake + a pot of tea = heaven! I’m with you GG13 I’m a devil for buying stationery, ever since I was a small child in early junior school with sixpence pocket money and would go to the local newsagent on my own (!) to buy those bright red writing books ... they had times tables on the back ... began with an ‘S’. Hmm. Thinking cap on now I’ll come back if I remember it! Was it ‘Stowells’? Something like that....

Himself is watching Man. Utd. I’m going to read for a while and think fondly about our dear departed friend. RIP.

Hope everyone has a pleasant and peaceful evening. x

‘Goodnight All’.

brook2704 Wed 20-Jan-21 20:45:03

I’m pleased for you Pittcity I think I’d love to live in a small town centre with everything within walking distance rather than always having to use the car or bus to get anywhere ..

Pittcity Wed 20-Jan-21 20:04:48

We have taken a leaf out of Urmston's book and are moving into the town centre. So looking forward to having life a stone's throw away.

I used to live in a town with a bookshop that was very well known locally as the Cromwell B okshop. Due to one of the letter falling off.
Jaxjacky DH is doing well thank you.
Hope everyone is ok.
TOYA?

Urmstongran a bookshop which also sold coffee and cake is my heaven! I would have loved one.

There was one near us in Olney some years ago , it was called “Words” and there was an archway through to the next door shop which was a tearoom called “Teapots”.

Nannytopsy Wed 20-Jan-21 19:34:53

Another set of DGC just been returned to their parents! Sitting down with a fine cup of coffee, which I shall drink before it gets cold this time! As of today, DiL has to self isolate following a contact testing positive, so we shall not be teaching for a couple of weeks.
Stay safe x

GrannyGravy13 Wed 20-Jan-21 19:29:52

New books, jotters and stationery.......heaven

Susan56 Wed 20-Jan-21 19:24:26

I’m another who loves a good bookshop.I think books are what have kept me going over the last year.

Still raining here and a lot of localised flooding.DD1 has been unable to drive out of their lane today due to floods so not sure if we will be on childcare duties tomorrow.

I agree soop. The inauguration ceremony was very uplifting.President Biden’s speech was excellent and I loved Amanda Gordon, the young poet laureate.

Just popping in to say hello and to warm up by the fire as it’s been snowing again here all day, brrrrrrr roll on spring!
grandmabatty, BA and GG hope you all enjoy well earned rests this evening after busy times looking after little ones ... Hope the wine is hitting the spot BA - I could do with a glass myself but I don’t know why I agreed with DH that we’d just have wine at the weekends ....
I also enjoy looking around bookshops and I’ll definitely join everyone for coffee and cake on the comfy sofas...

Jaxjacky Wed 20-Jan-21 18:53:59

Grandmafrench we lived in the Dordogne 2015-2018, from March-October each year, plenty of the??‍♀️? going on there!

Fennel Wed 20-Jan-21 18:44:51

There was a thread on here about which shops you miss on the local highstreet and I was going to write Waterstones. Gone now. I used to spend hours in there. They often had writers come and make a presentation, sign books etc.
Sorry to say I don't read so much now - except for old favourites.
I must make the effort to catch up with all friends on here - reading this thread keeps me plodding on in these dark days.

BladeAnnie Wed 20-Jan-21 17:57:47

Just popping in to say hello after my day on nanna duty. We've had a lovely busy day and I'm so grateful that we are in a position to be able to help out like this. Mr BA is just back from taking DGD home. He is now putting a sainsbury's taste the difference pizza and garlic bread in the oven and pouring us a very welcome glass of wine wine. I will be having a very early night tonight!! Sending virtual hugs to anyone under the weather or with worries of any kind. Stay safe

soop Wed 20-Jan-21 17:39:27

Urms I am another book shop lover. Imagine one with a coffee shop and homemade cake and comfy sofas. Imagine us lot gathering for a regular book club and blethering to our heart's content. Bliss!

The inauguration ceremony, although different from all others that have preceeded it, was uplifting. I like President Biden. I feel that he is genuine. I nodded throughout his excellent speech. I am overjoyed not to have seen Trump and his entourage on the podium.

All that we can do, is wish America well. So much to deal with in the direst of times. I am returning to my seat to raise a toast to the new President. I daren't have one sooner. I needed to be here to wish you all a pleasant evening.

Fern is in the utility room. She is enjoying Sheba duck and a few crunchy biscuits. This is the time of day that she enjoys best (I imagine) because, for a wee while, she's an indoor cat.

Bye for now, special peeps. I hope that we meet again tomorrow. smile moon

Urmstongran a bookshop which also sold coffee and cake is my heaven! I would have loved one.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 20-Jan-21 16:37:28

Oh I would love my own bookshop ???

It is tipping down here, and getting blustery.
Cottage pie for dinner accompanied by cabbage, broccoli and sprouts, all I could muster after homeschooling and minding a 1yr old (DD is poorly so they have been here since 7am Monday, it’s ok we are bubbled)

Have a good Wednesday evening ?‍♀️
