Which Name Would You Choose?

kazziecookie my name is not Karen but I hate the way the name is used at the moment. It infuriates me that people feel they can use it as a term of abuse against women (I don’t see an equivalent with a man’s name). It is generally used in an ageist and sexist way. I don’t think you should change your name, instead I think we should all challenge this lazy stereotyping of any woman who expresses an opinion or behaves in a way others don’t like.

Quite a timely thread! The supermarket delivery lad (and he was lad of about 18/19) brought my shopping to the door and said ‘Is it Nina?’, when I confirmed he said ‘that’s unusual and a really lovely name’. He made my day

Had my only son been a girl he would have been Lydia, Molly.
If I had a little girl now (highly unlikely) I think I’d call her Violet.

I like my two Christian names but if I could choose another l rather like Rosalind. I did not like my maiden name and don’t particularly like my married name but It is mine.

I had my forms all filled in and waiting for my divorce papers to arrive to get my maiden name back. My middle name is my grandmother's and my mother's name so happy with that. There was 4 girls and my dad had a little song for each of us using our first and middle names. I can still sing all the songs today.

When I was about 6 I sat next to a little girl in school who's surname was Pattison. She was the prettiest child and I thought her name was just lovely. I determined there and then to not marry anyone who wasnt called Pattison.

I’d like to be an Eleanor, it sounds so graceful and suitable for a ‘together’ person, which is what I’d like to be instead of a last minute Annie.

My first name is old fashioned and I’ve never liked it. I love the name Daisy or molly.

I would choose Chloe. My father wanted to call me that but my selfish Mother had her own way as usual! My Christian name ends in a consonant and I only like names that end with a vowel, I’m very Latin.

My names are Kathleen Mary. I've always been called Mary, from birth. It causes no end of problems with official docs if I don't remember to put my first name down, instead of my second. I don't like it; about ten years ago I told everyone at work that I was changing my name to Katie. They all started calling me Katie - and I never answered them, not realising they were talking to me!! Obviously left it too late

If ever I go into starbucks I always say my name is Penelope,
I would have loved to have been called that. I once sat for 5 minutes in starbucks with a lad calling 'penelope' as I forgot who I was that day. I have even used it at other times if I don't need ID like in a weight watchers class once, it just made me smile when people called me by my 'new' name!!! I was 'Penelope Wigglesworth'

I have a boring name, very common in the 50s.
Would love to be Talulah, it sounds so exotic. Lulu for short would also be okay.
Having chosen my Gransnet name I find I quite like it when people refer to me as Laura.
There is a rumour here in Wales that the vaccination in each group will be given alphabetically by surname, if so I’ll be very grateful to Orlin. Spent my younger years at the other end of the alphabet so last for everything.

I don’t mind my name and it’s easily shortened, I’m grateful I didn’t get one of the other names that were being considered, Sabrina or Penelope.

I have always detest my name. I had three godmother. Two had lovely names. I was named after the third...a lovely lady. In consequence I gave my daughters beautiful unusual names. Son was named after my dear father. My grandchildren all have lovely unusual names so daughters followed the trend. It is so important to think hard when naming a child.

Calendargirl that made me laugh. I always wanted to be called Elizabeth for the same game. Also, my friend (now Liz) had curly hair and I was sure I would have had it too if only I had the same name. I don’t mind my name-the short form is useful because it can be either male or female.

I hated my maiden name, I have never met another person with the same name, and it seemed very easy for school boys to make up horrible and embarrassing rhymes.
Would probably have married the first man who asked me, as long as he had a very ordinary name.

I don't actually see many people admitting to a name they would like.

I have hated my name for always. Bullied at school (in Edgbaston), where they changed the spelling to something rude! and was always called it by one of the teachers.

The nasty girls in school stories often had this name! Not the heroines!

I’d like to be called Tinkerbelle

I used to love my Christian name but at the moment I hate it as it is being totally abused on the internet (Karen) it is being used to describe anything nasty from a complainer to a racist. I have seen some truly horrible stuff online using my lovingly given birth name. I have even seen a sign in the road saying kill Karens. I am constantly being told to get it changed to something else but I have had it for 64 years and I can’t imagine being anything else.

The boys in our family got middle names but the girls didn't. How sexist is that. At least I got a respectable nickname. (Mo)
