Do you buy or read magazines?

When I picked up my ‘free’ FOOD magazine in Waitrose yesterday it got me thinking about magazines .

When I was a teenager I devoured ‘Honey’ and ‘19’ moving onto ‘Cosmopolitan’ and ‘Q’ for many years . I absolutely loved them, and couldn’t wait for the next one to come out .

Apart from the odd ‘Woman’s Own’ 25+ years ago I don’t think that I have bought a magazine since then .

A visit to the dentist was always a chance to dip into a different world fir a few minutes with the Overseas Property Magazines and the beautiful glossy ‘Vogue’ etc on offer , but sadly no longer .

Do you read them , regularly or in any specific circumstances?

Geekesse
Goodness no, I don't have a problem with you at all! However, the idea of having staff and sourcing them from The Lady was, I admit, quite memorable to me.
But then I do have a very good memory.
Please be assured that there is nothing sinister or unpleasant afoot.
thanks

I never thought of reading it now - we need a new butler and a housekeeper.

Callistemon Sat 30-Jan-21 17:48:36

I used to read The Lady when I was a young and looking for a temporary job as a nanny/au pair.

I read The Lady online, and mentioned it earlier. As I said then, it’s not nearly as bad as it sounds.

The advertisements for staff are quite entertaining. If only.....

geekesse Sat 30-Jan-21 16:45:15

FannyCornforth, Boz and nadateturbe, just to clarify, I said ‘if I were looking for staff, I’d probably check out The Lady, but it’s not something I’d read for pleasure.’

If I were I probably would, but I’m not so I don’t.

What peculiar details some people latch on to! Do you have a problem with me, or what I said, Fanny Cornforth?

nadateturbe Sat 30-Jan-21 15:07:11

FannyCornforth I think she said she would check it if she was looking for staff. Forgive me if I'm wrong.?

FannyCornforth Sat 30-Jan-21 13:51:38

Boz Geekesse takes The Lady.
It's where she would advertise for staff.
She mentioned it upthread.

interestingly, no-one owns up to reading The Lady, which targets the elderly. I have it on subscription simply for the ladygram crossword puzzle. Find the contents very bland.
The Sunday Papers have decent supplement mags which I quite like; at least, they are up to date.
Used to enjoy a sneaky look at "Hallo" at hairdressers but increasingly found I didn't know any of the celebrities from Adam!

I also have Readily. £7.99 a month and I read lots of magazines on there. All the food, travel & home ones. OH also uses it.

Magazines used to be my idea of small luxuries; I could chart my life with magazines starting with Woman, Woman's Own, Vanity Fair, the wonderful Woman's Mirror (I think) with Marje Proops, Penny Vincenzi, Virginia Ironside and other luminaries of the 1960s) ;Nova, Brides, Good Housekeeping, Cosmopolitan; then I discovered home magazines: Ideal Home, then 25 Beautiful Homes and Country Homes and Interiors.
Now I don't buy or read any; overpriced and stupid, with articles that barely turn the page. Full of women married to bankers or property developers who show us their beautiful homes, with a website at the end where you can hire these 'homes' for an eye-watering amount of money; mostly they stand empty depriving local families of houses in their locality. The turning point was the woman whose design statement was to dress her room with books with the spines facing inwards so they didn't distract from the neutral tone . I threw the magazine in the bin in disgust and haven't looked at Ideal Home or any other magazines since.
Rather read a book.

At the beginning of lockdown I’d signed up to my local library offering downloading of magazines for free , with just entering my membership number, with that I can read almost all weekly magazines for free on my iPad . Not only are the the usual women’s weekly magazines, but also Cooking, Home , Photography, Astronomy, Technology and many more to choose from . Once clicked on to the one you want to read you can then also look up all the past issues . Can’t fault it and saves a fortune.

I remember a magazine from my young teenage days called Date, then I went on to Honey and Petticoat, then Nova. When I moved to Singapore I discovered the delights of the American Cosmopolitan (at that time it wasn't being published in the UK).

Then in the 70s I used to read She which I loved, sadly no more. Then Mother and Baby. After that, the occasional weekly magazine, also Prima for the knitting patterns.

These days I have subscriptions to Good Housekeeping (free with my bank account), Saga magazine and a bi-monthly cat magaxine. Can't stand the weekly women's magazines, as they are full of stories about celebs I have never heard of.

FindingNemo15 Sat 30-Jan-21 10:08:47

I used to have a subscription to House Beautiful, but it is too expensive now and mainly full of adverts. I miss it.

I have always passed magazines on, but very rarely got any back!

GagaJo Sat 30-Jan-21 10:07:35

I used to LOVE a magazine, although didn't buy them often, because even years ago, the ones I loved were so expensive. In the early 80's, I liked SHE. It was quite feminist at that point, but went downhill fast after that, becoming just another woman's mag. I also loved, and still love, Vogue, but would never buy it. Waste of paper, waste of money.

I subscribe to Yours and it's great. It's the only magazine worth having in my opinion. I always look forward to it arriving in the letter box once a fortnight.
Some modern magazines are absolute pants.

dragonfly46 Sat 30-Jan-21 09:50:34

I never read magazines except in the doctors surgery and the hairdressers!

Gwyneth Sat 30-Jan-21 09:46:08

I occasionally buy a magazine as a treat because they are expensive. They are full of the same celebrities though. I think one month practically every magazine seemed to be focusing on Lorraine Kelly. Some of the first magazines I read when I was young were ‘Princess Tina’ and ‘Diana’. Couldn’t wait for them to be delivered every week!

Whitewavemark2 Sat 30-Jan-21 09:43:47

Talking about Good Housekeeping and it probably me showing my age, I don’t think it is nearly as good as it used to be.

Juliet27 Sat 30-Jan-21 09:41:56

Subscriptions with Saga and Goodhousekeeping.
Also have Country Living and Landscape

Grandma70s Sat 30-Jan-21 09:37:31

I’d forgotten She and Nova until I saw them mentioned on this thread, but yes, I read those too. Also Vogue from time to time.

Since my grandchildren started school I read Absolutely Education online.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 30-Jan-21 09:33:54

Every Christmas as part of my Christmas present DD gives me a subscription for Good housekeeping. I have had that magazine almost since I was married.

kittylester Sat 30-Jan-21 09:30:05

I have a subscription to Good Housekeeping and usually buy the Sainsbury's Food one and pick up the Waitrose one.

As DD3 edits a wedding magazine, I feel duty bound to read that too.

Millie22 Sat 30-Jan-21 09:15:44

I've always bought magazines from 'Jackie' as a teenager. Loved it with Cathy and Claire and their advice column. Then '19' and later 'Essentials' and now I buy 'Prima'. I once looked at a 'She' magazine at the dentists and couldn't believe what I was reading ? certainly not something I'd ever buy.

Georgesgran Sat 30-Jan-21 08:55:24

When DDs were at school, I always seemed to be hanging around for them and always bought magazines to kill time.
I hardly ever buy them now and just glance at those in the weekend papers (if I get one). Full of adverts and unwearable clothes at ridiculous prices.

TerriBull Sat 30-Jan-21 08:35:26

I did once I was probably an avid purchaser of Petticoat, Honey, Nova, Rave plus Melody Maker, and New Musical Express. Also Private Eye and Viz from time to time. Cosmopolitan for a while in it's heyday, but it became very boring imo. I never buy any now they seem to be a waste of money and of course in those bygone days none of us had the internet. For example, the sort of advice that was once dished out in women's magazines would be available on sites such as MN and GN. I imagine many publications struggle with a dwindling circulation.

Fashion bible magazines such as Vogue, which I pick up at places like the dentist/doctor/hairdresser (before lockdown) exasperate me now, I may have appreciated that sort of publication once, but even the Style magazine with the Sunday Times makes me want to hurl it across the room, ridiculously priced awful clothes aimed at whom I wonder, certainly not me hmm Once a bit of a slave to fashion, I can't help thinking what a fatuous load of, albeit money earning, nonsense it is!
