I didn't get the dog references either. I'd no idea Mawbe had gone. I can't imagine she would really have posted anything so awful it justified a lifetime ban. Sometimes I think there is a whole other GN that I never get to see

In view of the strength of feeling manifested in this thread, I suggest that HQ should consider a general amnesty. Rescind the permanent suspension and cancel the final warnings issued to other members. This would be 'in the spirit of the site", as you say, Maggiemaybe.

For those who want to get the attention of GNHQ I suggest you ask your question and then report your own post, that way the moderator is sure to see it.

I agree, Maggiemaybe particularly at this troubled time when many posters may be alone, bereaved and need the support of other Gransnetters.

The guidelines are rather vague and surely need more clarity.

To be fair to GagaJo, it took me pages/ages to realise who all these cryptic “thin dogs” posts alluded to, and I’ve been on GN for over 8 years.

I haven’t seen whatever thread led to all the controversy. And I know I’m not observant, but I didn’t even know Maw had a dog. I’m guessing it’s discussed in the Kitchen or one of the other ongoing threads, and we don’t all spend time there.

Lifetime bans are very harsh. I wonder how many are doled out (the only one I’m sure of is Jingl’s, and the site is so much poorer for that). It’d surely be “in the spirit of the site” for GN to rethink the policy.

GNHQ, please do the right thing and reinstate Mawbe. I think the truth of the matter is clear on this thread.

If posters want to come back as someone else (under a different name) I don’t see how that can work in some cases. For example, I flit between Manchester and Malaga. If I came back under another name #lazygran it would be pretty obvious who I was!

The same with some returnees ... I notice a name change for example but their lifestyle, where they live etc give away their identity!

...its absolutely terrible, especially in these hard times,to actually BAN people from GN...its a lifeline for lots of members, more so for bereaved members...GNHQ sometimes your treatment of people is harsh...and heartless...and ridiculous...its a community, an online group of friends...you need to rethink the rules...

The thread is about more than who is or is not a bully, it is about moderating a forum fairly and consistently and defining what will and what won't be deleted, and what misdemeaners will or won't attract a ban. Consistency is the keyword.

As a teacher, GagaJo, you know the value of justice not only being done, but being seen to be done, and done impartially. If it were seen by those who complained less often and less stridently that you favoured those with the loudest and most frequently raised voices, you would lose respect.

This is descending into a slanging match. A pity, because the vast majoroty of the posts have been amicable and sensible. I don't know why I am still sitting here reading all this. Posters have been supportive and helpful towards you and your problems so don't turn round and kick them in the teeth now.

Nope Petra, I am wading through THREE books that I have to teach tomorrow that I have fallen behind on. Bickering about who is and isn't a bully for 26 pages isn't worth wading through.

Well, I’m pretty new and I was able to work out who it was eventually! I was quite shocked at such harsh treatment of a long time poster.

You already state you know how the situation has come about.
As for ‘unpleasant place’ you have been helped a lot by many posters with kind comments and good advice for all the threads you have started about your personal life.You didn’t think it was unpleasant then!

It certainly is more interesting, with a greater range of topics. We could all try to add more 'topical' discussions.

GagaJo the person who appears to have been banned was involved in a robust discussion with Biba . I am sure you must have seen the exchanges. Both the disappeared GN member and Biba have been on GN for some time albeit with various names. I have seen their differences aired on many occasions so would have thought you could not have missed it.

How would I know who has a dog? Sorry Callistemon, 1) I haven't read the whole thread (its mostly boring) and 2) I don't know the members well enough to know that info.

YES, I know how the situation has come about. And as I said, it's been coming for a long time. I am surprised more people haven't been banned frankly. This can be a very unpleasant place at times. As the comment about 'running mate' shows. You (plural, not directed at you Callistemon) are all your own worst enemies.

I am sure there is a lot of valuable stuff in here for the owners or mods or whoever. I am also sure they will have read it and decided it would be counter productive to pull it. Most suggestions seem to be positive so here’s hoping there are a few changes, minor perhaps but changes nevertheless.
