Sir Tom is in hospital with covid. I hope he will recover, he’s been an inspiration to so many.

Unfortunately he did what we re told not to do and went on a family Christmas holiday to Barbados did this play a part in it we don’t know ? Maybe it did maybe it didn’t Hes a game old 100 year old who s loved his year of fame and seems a dear chap I hope he recovers for another year or so

Well said.

Must say I agree with what was said by vegansrock. He is approaching his 101st year.

Would save my prayers (if I was he type to have belief in their usefulness) for people many decades younger, ill and dying from so many illnesses, not have had the decades of life that he has.

His family are being allowed to stay with him in hospital so it sounds like a good outcome is not expected. I know he's a 100 but others live a few years longer and I do hope he will, to enjoy a bit longer the interesting life his walking success has brought him. If he goes though, he will certainly be going out on a big high.

I’m not sure what those who are praying for a 100 year old to have a “full recovery” are expecting? That he becomes immortal? Not being cynical, just realistic. He’s in hospital, the family are there, let’s hope he’s comfortable and not suffering too much is probably as good as it gets.

Yes.

I don't know about the statistic of 25%, FC, but it was being said by some sources very early on in the pandemic that covid-19 was largely nosocomial, i.e. caught in hospital and similar environments like care homes.

I wish him well, I really do. 25% of all Covid infections are caught in hospital, so I imagine his treatment for pneumonia, even if only as an outpatient, is what gave it to him.

He has done so well reaching over 100. If this does prove to be his time to go, then we should celebrate his life, rather than it being a national tragedy, but I hope he can have a few more healthy months with his family first.

Is this true?!
25 % of all infections are caught in hospitals ?

lemsip, the very elderly are rarely admitted to ICU. It would be inappropriate to sedate them - so no, it's not good news.

GrannyLaine Mon 01-Feb-21 22:49:40

His family is at his bedside. Its sounding very serious indeed.

lemsip Mon 01-Feb-21 22:40:22

he doesn't need a ventilator and is not in intensive care.

Hetty58 Mon 01-Feb-21 22:09:19

lemsip, I'm really hoping he pulls through too - but I doubt that he'd be put on a ventilator at his age!

nanna8 Mon 01-Feb-21 21:54:11

It was on our news ,too, over in Australia. A wonderful man and I do hope he recovers.

Pittcity Mon 01-Feb-21 21:51:29

The hospital has said that his family is with him. An exceptional circumstance at present.

lemsip Mon 01-Feb-21 19:21:05

he was not in intensive care or on a ventilator so I hope he will recover.

I wasn’t previously aware of his holiday and have mixed feelings so would like to focus on the fact that he is one of the very many who fought a war so that we have the freedom to comment either way. So thank you for that Sir Tom.

I hope all the good wishes and love being sent his way will bolster him and get him through this.

Gwenisgreat1 Mon 01-Feb-21 15:00:05

What a soldier he has proved to be - I hope he manages to soldier on for a bit longer!

Absolutely, Maggiemaybe.

A true gentleman and an inspiration. Praying that he will be here to see this awful virus lose its grip on the world.

Exactly! I couldn't put it better.
C'mon Sir Tom! You can do it !

I’m glad he did get to Barbados and enjoyed what will probably be his last foreign trip and his last family holiday. I hope he pulls through but if not he had an amazing final few months and he ticked off Barbados from his bucket list. He is an inspiration to us all.

It’s a timely reminder to all of us to have our pneumonia vaccination, although his pneumonia might not be one that’s covered by the vaccine.
