TV turning on of it's own accord.

Has anyone experienced this, please?

Usually in the middle of the night, my tv starts making a horrible, really loud crackling noise, followed by a bright green 'interference' type effect onscreen.

It slowly clears, and on comes the tv.

Is this a sign that it's dangerously old and about to blow up?
Is it haunted? shock

I used to be meticulous about unplugging mine overnight as it was said to be a possible fire hazard. I don’t do it now due back problems.

My son in law is a firefighter and as well as tv he unplugs every kitchen appliance overnight. Microwave, toaster, kettle, dishwasher, washing machine etc. He said he’s attended house fires too many times that have been traced to a home appliance.

I know he’s right but it’s annoying sharing holiday accommodation with him when you’re first up and switch the kettle on only to discover 10 mins later it’s turned off at the wall!

Your SIL is right - the Grenfell fire started with a faulty fridge sad

We once heard a noise in the middle of the night and went downstairs to find the dog had turned on the TV and was watching a horror film.

Thanks ever so much.
I shall think about doing it myself (mine is a samsung too, just like in the video)

I really appreciate it. smile

That's exactly it!!!
I haven't watched through to the part about fixing the main board yet.

I've had it all these years and only just worked out how to find a bit more info on programmes in the last 6 months.

Mainboards on eBay are priced between £30 and £50 so if you can find one for your TV and don't mind having a go at installing it yourself you may be able to eradicate the problem and extend the life of your set. Even if you pay someone to do it and they charge by time spent, it looks such a simple job that it should still cost less than a new TV.

It could be something as simple as a partially stuck on/off button on the remote or the batteries in the remote are running low. These and several other possibilities listed here:

As the TV is old, it could be that the mainboard is faulty and needs replacing. Does any of this look and sound familar?

OH has an old laptop which sometimes comes on of it’s own accord. Usually BBC news. Also, the other night my son was woken by strange vibrating in the bathroom . I had set my toothbrush to recharge but it was obviously left turned on. Bizarre.

moggie57 Tue 02-Feb-21 18:21:41

you dont want it catching fire and your home with it.

moggie57 Tue 02-Feb-21 18:21:11

i would buy a new one

cornishpatsy Tue 02-Feb-21 18:11:47

Have a look at the settings , it may be that you have accidentally set it to come on at a certain time.

MissAdventure Tue 02-Feb-21 18:06:26

Oh I'll be fuming if I save up for a new one and it starts those shenanigans!

GrannyGravy13 Tue 02-Feb-21 17:40:07

Our friends new TV often came on in the night, always on the Cricket Channel, they hated cricket but her deceased FIL had lived and breathed it!!

MissAdventure Tue 02-Feb-21 17:32:11

That's what I'll do.
I'm relieved to hear I'm not going mad. smile
Or, if I am, I'm in good company.

Miss A , I had that same problem - it would come on, in the middle of the night. This problem started very soon after the sudden death of my friend’s partner. She was staying with me for a few days after the funeral etc. I swore he was trying to say something. But it could have been just coincidence .Anyway, I now unplug it from the wall socket. No problems now.

MissAdventure Tue 02-Feb-21 16:51:59

I'll be moving out if that happens!

Harris27 Tue 02-Feb-21 16:28:00

Mine used to do that after we switched it off!

midgey Tue 02-Feb-21 16:25:25

I played holy hell with my husband for turning on the bedroom tv in the middle of the night......until it happened to me!

Oopsadaisy1 Tue 02-Feb-21 16:17:15

Boz your TV doesn’t need to be on to record programmes, they are ‘stored’ in the Skybox.
You definitely need to leave the box plugged in at all times

Boz Tue 02-Feb-21 15:30:40

We have the same problem! We have recently moved away from Talk-Talk to Sky with, of course, their box. DH tried to get an answer but failed. Very disconcerting (Poltergeist?). We do not want to disconnect at night because of late recordings. We have resorted to turning sound off at night, when we go to bed.

Having said that - our desktop computer kept coming on on its own. I would find it humming away merrily. The socket is in an awkward place and the computer was left switched on at the mains by mistake. I wonder if changes in the current or blips in the supply make them start up.

Riverwalk Tue 02-Feb-21 15:24:52

They're quite cheap nowadays! grin

TV

Septimia Tue 02-Feb-21 15:24:11

Definitely never leave things like that on standby. Televisions should be unplugged when not in use - although I'm working from what my father taught me years ago and technology has moved on. It there was a thunder storm it could affect the TV if it's not unplugged. Leaving things on at the mains (except fridges etc that are designed to be on all the time) can be a fire hazard too.

MissAdventure Tue 02-Feb-21 15:18:32

Yes, that's the simplest solution. Even though I have to pull out a heavy cabinet and rummage around behind it.

I suppose it's around 15 to 20 years old. That's still "new" in my book! grin
