So a piece of research was done that tells us that in our population the number of illegal immigrants is more than one and less than all.

Now what. Some, who have no more knowledge of the facts than they did yesterday, are jumping up and down at this thought. Don't you realise that is exactly what the DM intends you to do?

How does it feel to be led by the nose by these scandal sheets? And why, oh why, do you allow them to do it to you?

Just to get the figures straight, there are over 67 million in the country and if you assumed 1 million were illegal that would be I person in 67.

We have no idea of the scale of the problem do we?

My American son in had to jump through a whole lot of hoops and complete a lot of paperwork before he was allowed in to marry my daughter. He then had to go to Croydon every year to prove he was still living with her until he became a British citizen.

Judging by my midwife neighbour's experiences with immigrant prostitutes and their pimps I think a lot of people aren't going to be allowed to be vaccinated. They aren't very keen on the women going to hospital to have babies.

Does anyone remember a report where an attempt was made to gauge the approximate number of people living in London illegally?

The 1.3 million figure could be an underestimate.

I understand your frustration at the ‘red tape’ but you don’t know for sure, without trying, that you would not be accepted as long as you can show that you are able to support yourself and will not be a drain on Australia’s resources.

There is a quote that come to mind when thinking of the gossip rags that print these things and it's "gossip empowers the weak". It is certainly used to make them feel empowered.

nanna8 what gets on my nerves about Australia is that I couldn't just plonk myself there because my family are there, I'd have to go through a rigmarole of questions and at 80 chances are I wouldn't be accepted.
I've been livid seeing all and sundry coming here, no questions asked for that reason. I should, along with everyone else who has family there, be free to choose there or here in the UK.

I remember writing to the then Oz PM, Keating at the time, airing my grievances on being unable to settle in Oz without any red-tape involved, because I have family there. He did reply, or rather someone on his behalf but he signed the letter.

I'll be encouraging my GGC to emigrate when they're old enough because there's nothing in this country for them.

Doesn’t make it right though. Even ID cards wouldn’t work as they can be forged I expect. Unless they incorporated biometric data such as retinal scans. Like fingerprints, the pattern of blood vessels at the back of the eye is unique to every individual, and they can be very easily read for identification purposes. Which is why we get scanned that way at passport control.

I read the Reuters fact check too, not just the final paragraph either. The top estimate was 1.2 million in 2017, which was 100,000 fewer that in 2016. So if numbers have continued to go down at the same rate, its 800,000 now. But as Reuters say themselves nobody knows. Maybe everybody you meet is an "illegal"

Of course they do Franbern. Although, to be fair (even to Tories) we all do it. I just happen to disagree with this one.

My point exactly Franbern. That 1.3 million number is out there now and will get quoted again and again, here and elsewhere. So inflated figures and false news - which is also being mentioned on another thread this morning - become "fact".

I noticed that we also managed to blame the immigrants for any future failures in our vaccination program before we even got to the bottom of page 1. Makes my blood boil.

Do people actually READ what other posters write. Even after alegrias1 kindly sent a link to the original study - posters just kept on quoting that figure of 1:70, totally inaccurately. Probably nearer 1:700.

The figure is truly horrifying and very disappointing that the government, despite repeated promises, has failed to tackle the problem of illegal immigration.

It is extraordinary how so many people have managed to stay under the radar. How lax we are.

I had high hopes for Priti Patel with her constant assurances that she would tackle this problem but so far she doesn’t seem to have the answer.

The main problem is that these immigrants will not come forward for a vaccine for fear of being deported so that huge number of people who shouldn’t even be here could scupper our vaccination programme.

Actually, Ug, 'if' the 1.2 million figure is correct then it's more like 1 in 60.

I'm not sure if they will be vaccinating all adults first though - surely that would make sense as younger adults are not immune and some under 50s have been seriously ill or have died.

The WHO (always think of Roger Daltry when I say that!) are asking western countries to vaccinate over 50s then to look to offering vaccines overseas to ensure world wide coverage and try to reduce a surge of new variants.b

The UK will be doing that and I believe Australia has ordered 100 million doses in order to provide vaccines to other, poorer nations in the South Pacific.

I'd far prefer they were vaccinated regardless of what their circumstances are .Its for the common good and they are after all human beings like you or me.If you forget the "illegal" tag and think there but for the grace of god maybe it wont shock you ...this country treats asylum seekers appallingly ,pleased to see that at least they've stepped up to the plate with the jags

There seems to be confusion about the definitions.

An illegal immigrant may have entered legally but overstayed their visa or may be someone who has entered illegally and disappeared into the black economy.

An asylum seeker will be registered with the authorities as they are seeking asylum. They could be awaiting refugee status.

Whilst I agree that everyone whether ‘illegal’ or not should be vaccinated I don’t agree that asylum seekers are treated appallingly. I think this country does it’s best to welcome those who come here legally through the correct channels.
