What do you think of Princess Anne’s sitting room at Gatcombe Are you surprised?

Funny how Kevin McCloud always returned to those GD house with vast, bare interiors and acres of un-curtained/un-blinded glass, on lovely sunny days - never when it was cold, grey and miserable outside.

I’m not sure he always liked them, though. One house he genuinely seemed to love IIRC was the relatively very small one built entirely of natural, entirely local materials in a wood. Not a scrap of concrete anywhere!

Kevin McCloud is so annoying on Grand Designs, the format is old and tired now.

Someone commented, once, that Grand Designs houses almost always have a 'snug' type room where the owners actually live.
There's a Grand Designs house near me, I'd love to have a look inside.

Far too cluttered for me too. I've always wondered how Princess Anne's husband has always managed to stay under the radar. I don't know anything about him and you never see them together. Strange how the press haven't done any stories on him.

I think he’s a huge support to her, but quietly in the background. He has often been seen on tv documentaries talking about her. Peter and Zara Phillips seem to have a great relationship with him also.

This seems such an extraordinary thread.

If she likes it, that's fine.

What makes it middle class?

The dust. If you look closely enough??

Great that we have so many arbiters of good taste on here. I can rest easy now.

Lilyflower Mon 08-Feb-21 19:41:33

Delightfully tasteless. I’d go mad in a room like that in less than a day.

I'm sure Princess Anne couldn't care less about our views, hence why she allowed photos to be published - knowing that there'd be lots of remarks made.

I dont like it ,we were asked what we thought of it.I'm not a guest in her home and I would never pass remarks about someone elses house .If we weren't supposed to give an honest opinion what was the point of the post?

Grandma70s Mon 08-Feb-21 18:39:43

I’ve got that bird book. Possibly the only thing I have in common with Princess Anne,

The room looks OK to me. Tidy rooms with no clutter are really boring.

Grandmama Mon 08-Feb-21 18:33:32

Really homely. Makes our front room look quite tidy. Will now stop nagging DH to clear up his clutter.

JaneJudge Mon 08-Feb-21 18:03:48

Sophie seemed genuine when I met her too in all honesty

3dognight Mon 08-Feb-21 17:59:59

Yes, that was abit OTT by the Daily Mail, no need to scrutinise in detail! I thought she might be ready for a nice recliner by now! But she is happy to make do with a support cushion...

I thought it was lovely, by the way.

MagicWriter2016 Mon 08-Feb-21 17:59:48

I have to say that I find all the posts from people who have criticized PA for her taste ect pretty judgemental. Why do some folk like to think that their taste is the only good one? I have met Princess Anne at a Carer’s meeting once and she was so down to earth and nice, it was all the ‘staff’ that surrounded her that made you feel uneasy. She is the only Royal who is true to herself and her daughter seems to be following in her footsteps. I would happily sit her sitting room/tv room/snug and have a cuppa with her.

JaneJudge Mon 08-Feb-21 17:59:23

slip covers on the chairs I imagine but the queen has them too in the link I posted!

What makes it middle class?

Yes I was wondering that too. Do tell Shelagh6.

Nightsky2 Mon 08-Feb-21 17:51:16

Not unlike my sitting room with bits and pieces everywhere. As house that is lived it and not a show house and where friends feel comfortable. It’s not a show house.

merlotgran Mon 08-Feb-21 17:21:49

Seeing as Princess Anne hasn't changed her hairstyle in decades, I doubt she worries about dated furniture.

Musicgirl Mon 08-Feb-21 17:19:55

It's hardly Ideal Home, but very much what we might expect from a no-nonsense, horsey, upper class lady. She looks very comfortable in it and it suits her. I have a lot of respect for Princess Anne .

kittypaws49 Mon 08-Feb-21 17:17:00

Shabby but not chic ! Rather depressing, I couldn't stand a room like that, but she must like it. Probably not a person much bothered by their surroundings.

Shelagh6 Mon 08-Feb-21 16:56:49

A bit cluttered to say the least and very middle class!

Buffy Mon 08-Feb-21 16:56:04

Wouldn’t have guessed it belonged to someone under 80, but she must be happy with it or she wouldn’t have allowed the photograph. Good luck to her.
