I am concerned that we are supposed to live in a democracy, yet according to a Guardian article on Sunday The Queen successfully lobbied the government to change a draft law in order to conceal her “embarrassing” private wealth from the public, according to documents discovered by the newspaper.

The Guardian is publishing documents this week which they have unearthed in The National Archives. If you are interested it’s worth reading the article.

Perhaps the RF could, as they have benefitted massively from the NHS during Covid and had their vaccinations, donate enough to pay for all the vaccinations in the country.
I thought this trisher when DofE went into King Edward Hospital and is undoubtedly receiving umpteen visits from specialist NHS physicians who are needed in big NHS hospitals close by. A donation to the local trust maybe

I used to be rather a militant one until a certain PM made me realise we could get a detested/useless/etc former government person as president for life. In that case, I’ll stick with the Queen for now though I do wonder about Prince Charles....

I think you are right Allegrias1 after seeing the comments on the (now deleted) Harry and Meghan post.

Most criticism voiced is to do with the privileges enjoyed by members of RF, not of the individual. Apart from perhaps Prince Andrew.
I'm a republican but I wish none of them harm. I'm sure I'm not alone in this.

The Queen could auction off a few possessions to help with the national debt given the value of many items in the royal collection that are just moth balled in Buckingham Palace vaults. These are held for the nation but I don’t think the nation or the royal family would miss them.

Iam64 Although it's no scientific survey, I think it's those who support the RF who are most vocal in the criticism of Harry & Meghan. Whereas most of us who think the RF shouldn't be part of our governance feel a bit of sympathy for the couple.

Personally, I don't feel any animosity to any member of the RF, only towards the institution.

Nadateturbe, from reading so many gransnet posts, I don’t agree it’s the institution that upsets people so much - it’s the people in the institution. Or as the endless criticism of H and M shows - even those who try to leave the institition

Greeneyedgirl - I'm not remotely worried, the RF have managed to survive for centuries and I've no doubt they will prevail in some form or other no matter what happens.

I'm just always entertained by the invective the mere mention of them induces in people. An awful lot of energy seems to go into people resenting them.

Happens to many here in U.K. though millions of children starving living in poverty as we all know.

If they were evicted from everything now they wouldn't even get a council house -there aren't any. So it would be HM & D of Edinburgh in a care home, Charles & Camilla in sheltered housing, Will, Kate & children in a B&B somewhere. All the rest would have to live on the streets-homeless!

I have no personal feelings towards the RF, but I believe they have no place in a modern functioning democracy, and I dislike the secrecy under which they operate.

I wouldn’t be too worried NellieG that they will end up on a “sink estate” if the monarchy is abolished. Even if they have to relinquish Crown owned property, they will still have Balmoral Castle, and the Sandringham Estate, which are privately owned, along with huge personal wealth.
