Esspee, no I don’t think your six generations with no extra marital affairs or divorces is ‘the norm’. I’m not certain I’d want it to be either, so many miserable, abused women forced to stay in marriages isn’t something I’d want to see again.
The idea that any loving parent would disown a child who had an affair seems extreme. Perhaps you’re referring to a pattern of behaviour. Even so, I have some sympathy for eg Princess Margaret. She went off the rails - unhealthy to have your adult life constrained by your big sister. She needed a proper job

Believe it or not Anniebach not one of my family in six generations divorced. (into genealogy at the moment) and I know of no extra marital affairs in the family. Isn’t that the norm?

Espee you are judging people from three generations, no one in three generations of your family divorced, had an affair ? You would disown your own child ?

And what has Edward done that would cause you to disown him if he were your son ?

The infidelities and appalling lack of sense of duty spring to mind Anniebach.
I’m thinking Edward/Wallace Simpson, Margaret, Charles, Camilla, Diana, Anne, Edward, Philip, and the ghastly Andrew to start with.
If any of my family behaved like that I would disown them. In their positions they should be beyond reproach.

I believe the monarchy has had it’s day.
I have huge respect for Elizabeth I/II but her son and heir, not an ounce. If he ever becomes king with his mistress/wife beside him that is the day I will become a Republican.

We should abolish the monarchy it's not fit for purpose it's broken and can't be fixed.

Not a Monarchist. I think we could keep them though, but reduce them down to a purely ceremonial role and massively cut their funding. They have carefully managed to build exceptional wealth, so shouldn't really need so much of our tax payers money.

Prince Charles vetted laws that stop his tenants buying their homes. Queen's consent should not be allowed in a supposed democracy.

I too was very disturbed when I read the article two days ago. The monarch should not have the power to influence legislation.

Royal families have always been somewhat above the law and mostly it is ignored until it becomes blatantly obvious and even then they are hardly likely to be sent to jail like anyone else would be. The Queen, by and large, has been an asset to the uk and has probably earned her wealth. The rest of them should pay their way, no doubt about it. Whilst the populace are willing to support them it won’t happen though.

I would suggest that, apart from the allegations against Andrew (and they are very serious allegations), it is of great significance that a family with such wealth should be applying pressure to keep that wealth and their investments under wraps.

Royal families are not immune to corruption and anti-democratic, self-serving behaviour - just look at Thailand, Spain and Saudi Arabia.

The Royal prerogative still exists so the monarch has the power to read and veto any law they wish. We are not a democracy.

I’ve become one of those adults who changed their mind about something significant. I believe HM Queen Elizabeth is probably much better as head of state than an elected presidential type, even if that was David Attenburgh.
All her adult life in public service is admirable.
The RF does bring in pots of cash in tourism. The financial cost to us as individuals isn’t that big.

Has anyone read The Queen & I by Sue Townsend? The Republican Party have won the General Election and the RF are shipped out to a sink estate in the Midlands where they experience living on benefits, day centres and social workers. Quite an old book now but still worth a read.

Of course an elected head of state could be outside of politics. It would simply need a position to be created with a clear desciption of the duties involved. Duties entirely removed from the legislative process. For example he/she might perform a ceremonial opening of Parliament but not make the speech about the policies, that would pass to the PM. It could very well be an ex-politician. But what about David Attenborough, or Brian Cox?
