Sand it down just to smooth lumps and bumps and wipe it down give it a layer of primer then paint it. Not gloss paint just a flat matte.

I bought a very useful table in the charity shop. Just the right size, height and so on.....but it’s a really hideous eighties ginger colour. What can I do to improve it? Bear in mind I am somewhat hamfisted please!
